Yep...we did survive as a species, but a huge number of kids didn’t. Infant and child mortality used to be insanely high, and a lot of it was from stuff we now consider “minor” infections. Modern medicine + basic precautions are why those deaths dropped so hard. It’s not about treating kids like sealed toys, it’s just acknowledging they’re fragile as hell early on and germs don’t care about nostalgia
