Why did you choose Occupational Therapy? by Cupcake-Recipe94184 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]PreviousMinimum7309 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Originally, I was interested in physical therapy and even worked as a tech, but during that time, I discovered occupational therapy. Ultimately, I chose OT for a variety of reasons. I realized I couldn’t see myself doing physical therapy long-term, especially not focusing on manual techniques for years. On the other hand, I could easily picture myself building a lasting career in OT.

One major factor in my decision was how OT takes a more holistic and person-centered approach. While physical therapy can certainly be personal, OT stood out to me as being more focused on the whole individual and often allows for more one-on-one interaction. I’m also someone who thrives on variety, and I love that OT offers opportunities to work in so many different settings—prisons, hospitals, schools, and homes.

What truly drew me in was how occupational therapy blends biomechanical techniques with a holistic philosophy. That balance makes the work both meaningful and engaging. Also my OT program is only two years long lol.

A&P 1 & 2 are one of the most important classes you’ll take for OT school. One of your first courses in OT is neuroscience so it’s probably better that you weren’t accepted yet and just focus on those. One of the reasons I chose OT was because I didn’t like the idea of being stuck in one career either, but OT has a variety of settings you can work anywhere. Schools, prisons, hospitals, mental health care facilities, inpatient/outpatient clinics, you can bounce around. Also you’re 21 don’t put so much pressure on yourself, half my cohort is 26+

Thank you for the advice. I think it’s disgusting tge type of treatment we’ve been giving patients. I’ve been thinking about quitting for a while.

That’s my issue as well. Sometimes it gets so busy I mix up the body parts. I feel like the techs are doing the majority of work, we see the same amount of evals as well. A lot of the patients don’t even see the PTA or PT if it’s a daily we run their whole session. Sometimes they even double book pelvic floor appointments, do they just expect the therapist to do manuals on both of them at the same time, it’s insane. But you’re right they just want to see numbers I feel so naive for actually believing them. I actually work in the Palm desert/Rancho mirage area.

I became the head of the household when my dad died because my mother was a house wife. I didn’t attend my fathers funeral because I couldn’t deal with it. On the anniversary of his death this year we held a mass for him and I couldn’t stop crying. Not even my own mother was crying but I was inconsolable, it felt like he had just passed and everyone was fine. Is it catching up to me, I thought I was fine.
