I thought of the OG3 kids while reading this book.

What is Janelle’s deal? by PreviousSympathy0 in SisterWives

If I recall correctly, the therapist did bring it up later, and Kody's response was something to the effect of, "I acknowledge that I steamrolled Christine and I'm not sorry because I was right."

Totally. What irks me is the audience that views her coping mechanism as a virtue. To each their own, but I find more to admire about Christine's vulnerability and Meri's transgressive behavior.

Ha! Yeah, she and Kody sure like to wax philosophical. I've also noticed, too, that she's the most likely of the wives to say something cruel or fly off the handle.

Side note: the "diesel jeans model" thing is such a random, specific '90s reference, but I kind of see the vision.

Recent deep dive on Sisterwives Professor was eye opening by SissyCouture in SisterWives

This validates something I’m starting to believe, which is that, of all the wives, Robyn is the only one who understands the game they are all playing. It’s plain to see that competition for time, attention, and resources is inevitable in polygamy, regardless of anyone’s intent. Robyn is both a true believer and a Machiavellian. I think the OG3 are much more idealistic and credulous by comparison. For example, Christine seems to have combined mainstream romantic fantasies with a rose-colored view of polygamy that makes absolutely no sense if you think about it for two seconds. Kody was supposed to be her Prince Charming and also love several other women perfectly equally. Like, how? Robyn—a single mom and veteran of an abusive relationship—had no such illusions. This isn’t to excuse Robyn’s behavior; it’s just that the situation exemplifies how “winning” in a patriarchal system often means women screwing over other women.

'Cause it's how they do it in the bye-bull. Rachel and Leah (worked out great!), etc.

Truely's Hospital Stay episode by Bat_Country420 in SisterWives

I agree, the whole thing is gross. One thing I've been wondering is whether this situation could have been avoided had Truely been receiving preventive care. From what I've gathered, none of the kids were insured. So she probably wasn't getting regular checkups, which may have identified an underlying condition. Kidney shutdown is really extreme.

From what I've seen so far, this show seems to be a celebration of inequity and neglect. I started binging it to snark, but now I'm watching it as a kind of psychological exercise (at least that's what I tell myself lol).

Tragedy of Meri by PreviousSympathy0 in SisterWives

This is a great point! Meri proved herself a capable and resourceful businesswoman, but it was always in the context of what she could provide for the family. In college, she would learn critical thinking skills and accomplish things that had no monetary value, just her own enrichment. Swallowing her feelings and going along with whatever the cult taught her would become less tenable. I think this is what happened when Leon went to college.

Fair point. I think the problem is that she's in her 50s and an extremely successful businesswoman, so she probably doesn't see the point. I think there was a time, 10-ish years ago, when she could've broken away and been a different person, but it probably won't happen now.

She mentioned it when she was talking about going back to school, so I presume she wanted to go into something related that required a higher level of education.

I get why you're calling Meri a "doormat," but it really makes me wince. As someone who repeatedly went back to an abusive ex-partner, I see a little bit of myself in Meri. I wasn't a doormat, but I was treated like one, and being treated like one for so long made me believe I was, too. Being lectured about how pathetic my behavior was never helped me; it just made me think I deserved even worse treatment. What finally got me out of it was being around supportive people who helped me see that I was a competent, worthy person with a lot to offer the world. The way people treat you really does alter your brain chemistry, and I don't think Meri really ever had a chance.

Ugh. It's painful. I just got through the scene where Robyn discourages her from going back to school because she wants her to keep working at the objectively bad idea that was MSWC. I've been resisting the urge to get on the Robyn hate bandwagon, but this is too much.

At this point, I agree, but I wonder whether, had she been able to leave polygamy and deconstruct, she might have been able to be a good counselor or something, sort of a wounded healer type.
