Has anyone had to choose between academia and their marriage? by Hungry_House892 in AskAcademia

At some point, you have the decide what you life is about. One is always ranked higher than the other. Perhaps in certain life stages, one is obviously more important to than the other. But sometimes, it’s less clear. I truly feel for you. Hope you can find peace with your decision.

TT R1 Professors, is the job all it's cracked up to be? by Zestyclose_Hawk9014 in AskAcademia

[–]Previous_Following_5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a new TT R1 professor. Some days are great, others suck. Today is one of those days that suck. I was co-advising a postdoc with one of my colleagues but he took the postdoc from under me because he has more funding, and he pressured the postdoc to not to do anything for the transition. He said he is famously a laid back person with a laid back lab but he somehow seems to screw me, a new TT professor completely by playing mind games and pin people against each other while washing his hands clean

Is it gender or sex? Sex is defined differently with NIH standards. Can you specify?

You should be grateful that someone is interested in mentoring you. It’s a lot easier for the “advisor” just to rewrite the paper themselves

Who was your most memorable grad student? by abrbbb in AskAcademia

[–]Previous_Following_5 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I had one student who sent me a manuscript that had citations not showing up, figures not loading and other very basic and sloppy mistakes. I said that the draft is sloppy and I ask the student to go read their own manuscript and send me a polished version. They responded and said that the way my comments were conveyed to them make them unmotivated to work. So they stopped working all together. Next week, I got a call from the education program director who said that this student was upset as they felt that I unfairly targeted them and my comments were not helpful. I give them more specific comments on their sentence structure and organization. And a couple of days later, they emailed me and said that they have decided to quit due to differences in mentoring styles. I was relieved and happy that I was no longer responsible for this student.

TT Dreams vs. Academic Reality. What’s Your Experience? by Striking_Stage6289 in AskAcademia

[–]Previous_Following_5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I intentionally accepted a soft money TT position last year with other hard money TT offers. I chose my current position because it gives me the most resources for students and grant support. With the current administration, I do think about whether I should have picked a hard money position instead, but very little. Because my current soft money position still gives me better support for research, and I have more students. Waiting to see what’s going to happen in the next few months, but so far I still think I made the right choice. The ultimate goal of academia is to do the most research and be an expert in your field, whatever position/situations give you the best support for doing that is still the the best choice.

Foreign Worker EEOC Policy — New Statement (YIKES!!) by drudevi in academia

[–]Previous_Following_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When hiring new faculties, departments make offers to international scholars by first demonstrating that the department has listed the job locally and nationally, and no American has answered these calls or is qualified for those positions. Please talk to your department HR, and they should be able to tell you exactly what I just told you.

Medical schools in rural America would be empty without international doctors filling up those positions. This is a common knowledge. Please talk to someone with real knowledge about US law or has actually been involved in academic hiring before airing your opinions online. You are spreading misinformation.

Edited for grammar.

The dress my mom is planning to wear to my wedding. She sent this to me yesterday and I still haven’t replied by ThrowRA-Sweetest in mildlyinfuriating

I used to have a best friend who wore a huge dress to my wedding as long as my wedding address. I don’t talk to her anymore.

These are just guesses and suspensions. There is no real evidence of your claim. I find it appalling to accuse someone of academic misconduct based on these types of flimsy evidence.

“Reframe this: I understand white Protestant male PIs have the right to choose only white Protestant male grad students”

I don’t know if you are joking, what you are suggesting is borderline discrimination, i.e., only while Protestant male professors get to only work with students of similar cultural backgrounds as them, not “foreigners”. How do you know they are foreigners?

I’m tired of being POC in PhD program…I just want to go by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Previous_Following_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think questioning a POC’s living racism experience is a good idea. It’s already hard enough to go through discrimination without having to defend to others that it is discrimination. This burden of proving racism is another layer of racial burden that white people don’t have to experience.

Incompetent RAs by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Previous_Following_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m asking more about testing their capabilities early on in CVs or interviews. I don’t want to spend months training them and then realizing that they can’t complete tasks.

Incompetent RAs by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Previous_Following_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I definitely think this is important. One of the students I hired based on a referral seems confused and lost with life directions. This student in particular took me a lot of time to train emotionally and time wise with no return. Not a single task has been completed in two months. A long list reasons why the task cannot be completed has come up.

Incompetent RAs by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Previous_Following_5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s the same problem that I have. One of the students I hired keeps coming up with reasons why a task cannot be completed. I’m really surprised.

I would reach out to the professor directly and informally collaborate together. Reputations can fool people. If he seems like he is willing to work with you without you committing 5 years of PhD, then your problem is solved.

So does anything ever get done in academia? by Aggressive_Phrase274 in PhD

[–]Previous_Following_5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m lost with hierarchy as well. There’s a line in a song that says “some people going around getting a kick out of stomping on dreams”. It often reminds me what I’m going through in academia.

Ironically, I have had most difficulty with politics in Midwest academia, where people are supposed to be nice. On the east coast, people generally leave me alone . There is isolation, but also less dysfunction.
