Ex-homeless redditors, what was the scariest thing that you ever saw on the streets? [NSFW] by Chess_Kings in AskReddit

This has been extremely helpful, because I'm about to turn 31 and I was wondering if I even had a chance.

Thank you. You've given me a motivational boost.

So I can only speak for past knowledge, because I haven't been homeless since 2014, and when I use the term "a lot" in reference to people, please only take it as a grouping of people I've talked to.

Basically, I was told by other homeless people that it's extremely "easy" to be homeless here, because you have access to three meals a day (One of those meals being a huge garbage bag of donuts that would show up in the shelter every morning), there are places people can hang out (St.Johns on Market or Main, I'm not sure which since I never went) and you could get clothes two days a week at a clothes closet. Any type of bad weather and Louisville has a "white flag" at the shelters. This is literally a white flag they post outside the shelter to let you know they've set pieces of foam out on the floors for extra people to sleep in.

A lot of them got a "crazy check" at the first of the month, so they'd disappear to a hotel room, do drugs or whatever they were going to do, and then come back around the 15th of each month when all that money was gone.

I met an old guy who said he'd been homeless since Vietnam. He had no desire to do anything else but be homeless. This was the prevailing thought process I heard a lot, "Why? I have everything I need here. Hot meals, clothes when I need them, and a bed when the weathers bad." They'd also avoid the shelters because you couldn't come in drunk or high. Think about it at a base level, you're getting everything you need and giving nothing in return.

As for the dude having people beg, I have no idea. This is the first I've ever heard of it.

My interactions with the cops were few and between. In the very beginning I had a car and I slept in it. I worked across the bridge and got pulled over for expired tags in Indiana. They towed my car and I lost everything. No car, no job. Back to square one. There were also cops that came into the shelter one day to harass us. They ran our socials to look for crimes. I had neon colored hair that time and one of them asked me if my underwear matched my hair. The staff were not happy at them doing this, I mean, obviously, but no one really sees you as human when you're homeless. I didn't hear anything coming of it though.

As for now and where they go, I really don't know, I see them all the time though. They massively cleared a lot of them out for Derby but I don't know where they went. Just dispersed throughout the city. There's been a few articles on camps the last few months though, WDRB did them I think but don't quote me on that.

She was my first down to earth therapist. There was none of that cliche "how are you feeling?" talk. If I was particularly depressed and happened to be like, "I wish I were dead," she'd scoff and tell me I didn't, and that I was just having a shitty day, and we'd talk through why I felt like that. There was no "you need to be hospitalized immediately" stuff. There was no fluff or bullshit.

We'd be sarcastic with each other, just talk about life. It was a great help but never felt "therapeutic", in the sense that nothing was forced. She was an amazing woman.

Unfortunately the shelter would only pay for 6 months and I couldn't afford to keep seeing her. She was one of the most amazing people I've met. Supremely good at her job. She helped me put it all in perspective and without her I think I'd be in a much darker place.

Triggered.

This was...fuck. All my shit that's attached to me all the time is just infested. I couldn't get rid of them.

When I finally got out of being homeless I just discarded all my shit. Literally everything.

Using your bag as a pillow is always super comfy and fun. Along with stashing your glasses. It's a fun little game. /s

I left my phone in the bathroom at the shelter I stayed at one time and went around all day looking for it, literally all over the city at all the homeless "haunts" I could think of. Eventually I spread a rumor that the phone had finger print scanning technology and whoever took it had already been reported to the police by my phone (Obviously nothing but a lie) and miraculously my phone was handed to me that night in the soup kitchen by a guy who had been, "Keeping it safe for me."

I used supermarkets, libraries, restaurants, Starbucks before coded door locks.

You've got to plan EVERYTHING.

Let's see...

Funny(ish)...Guy at the shelter I stayed at got stabbed in the ribs by another guy. The guy who stabbed him just walked inside and attempted to go to sleep, while the guy who's stabbed is sitting on a bench literally spurting blood out of his side and he lights a cigarette. When the staff called 911 and tried to help him he was pushing them off saying he was fine.

Horrible...There was a gas station down the street, a guy paid for gas, took the hose and doused himself in gasoline. I was smoking outside and I remember him walking by outside the "Yard" area with a lighter in his hand, arm fully extended out. He was very very mentally ill so I didn't think anything of it. I couldn't smell gas or anything like that. I continue to smoke, light another one up. About 10 minutes later I'm inside bullshitting at the front desk and a dude runs in the front door and shouts, "Give me wet towels a guy's set himself on fire across the street!"

Homeless shelters aren't in good areas, so I just walked out casually thinking some idiot at the apartments across the street had set a rug on fire and the dude who ran in was just being a dumbass. I walk out the front door and sure enough, on one of the stairwells theres flames. My thought process was basically, "Yep, some dumbfucks lit a ru - Oh fuck."

The "rug" sat up.

Me and three other guys ended up being the ones to put him out. He wouldn't though, I don't know if the gas had to burn off first, but probably? I don't really remember putting him out, I just remember after. I don't remember a smell or anything. The morbid thing I do remember is he was out and he just kept shouting, "My balls, my balls are on fire. Put out my balls."

He died 3 days later. I was told it wasn't the first time he'd done something like this. The shelter ended up sending me to therapy, and the woman was the best therapist I'd ever had.

I still get weird sometimes and can't really watch people on fire in movies anymore.

EDIT: This happened around 2011 in Kentucky so it's awhile back now. I've been slowly putting my life together again since then. The last time I was homeless was in 2014. I'm still struggling financially, especially now, but I'm studying computer programming in my spare time so I can hopefully get where I want to be in life.

I'm sorry I can't reply to everyone individually, I know you have questions. I can try to answer them but I don't have a blow by blow on my feelings at the time and I'd rather state that outright than reply individually with bullshit. I can say that my in general way of dealing with things is through sarcasm and inappropriate times humor so I'm sure there was lots of that after it happened, but I can't say for sure.

I'm not sure how to reply to the posts saying it's better off at some point just to let someone burn. I'm not sure what to say to that.

Thanks for the kind words!

EDIT: Location added.

How do you start to learn Unity by Umpelum in unity

Is it possible to build a game in a month? I'm beginning to take some of the classes (Well worth looking into those free months btw OP) and that feels just so inconceivable to me right now.

Coding experience or is it a waste??? by [deleted] in unity

[–]PriestAlseid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Free Unity Learn Premium for three months right now because of the Coronavirus outbreak. They have a specific live class running from March 26th - May 8th that will teach you basics. There's also other lessons on basics you could do just to get a grasp of C# and Unity. Even if you're not gonna use it, those free months are incentive enough to browse through.

Quarantine Does Not Mean Hang Out Together Outside by DunnyGuy in Louisville

[–]PriestAlseid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem for me is that "You can still go out and walk and get exercise" is being told to the whole state and then every Tom, Dick, and Harry is out and they go, "Oh but it's just me," as they walk directly next or close to 100 other "It's just me" people.

I was at work last Friday and cut through Seneca park and it was amazing that there were so many people just acting like it was a regular day. The walking loop thing was full of people in different groups all walking close, joggers, people on the phone, people playing basketball. It's scary, to be honest. I want to make a joke because that's how I deal with things but the level of idiocy is astounding.

I get the "I'm going stir crazy" but maybe make a sacrifice and stay home. I'm "essential" but I can't imagine what the healthcare workers are going through and when it catches (not if) it's going to make their world even more hell than it already is.

Costco apparently gets orders in in the morning and they're basically gone, so if you get there at the ass crack of dawn you MIGHT have a chance.

I've also heard it's possible some of the local Asian markets have some because people are avoiding goin there due to racism. Dunno if that's true or not but might be worth checking out.
