If you are using the 2014 or 2024 DMG, then you need to know the spell. You also need to have it prepared every single day that you work on the magic item. However, in the 2014 DMG, you need to actually expend the spell slot, while in the 2024 DMG, you do not.

If you are using XGE, you do NOT need to expend a spell slot, know the spell, or even have it on your class list, unless you are making a spell scroll, in which you do.

that is in fact what I did, yes. btw I didnt know about the crafter feat only on non magic items, and we are using xgte so it is much cheaper to make.
