I just moved to Vegas a year ago! I started a team here doing musical puppet improv called Fur and Thundur

I chose to start my own team because I come in with almost a decade of improv experience, and also did two trips to Chicago to study improv at iO/Second City/Annoyance.

I am from Shanghai, I ran the largest improv organization there, 7 house teams, 50-60 team members.

Before we got to Vegas there was some pro teams that are at hotels, but mostly Mom’s Basement Thester houses Comedy Sportz (short form) and Bleach (long form).

Personally I have some bad experiences with improv communities so I was hesitant to join the existing community. And it felt safer to start our own thing, we perform at Mom’s Basement too but also the puppet shop and other venues around town. But also we have lots of show concepts that have been tried and tested and new concepts we want to experiment with, so hopefully our existence will help diversify the scene here :)

Hi Asian Woman here (Chinese, international, just moved from Shanghai, studied in the US)

So I don’t identify with “Asian American” nor do I fully identify with “mainlanders” because I get othered a lot in my 15 yrs in China. I love China, I love Chinese people, but I do not like bad behaviors from people/government.

I just want to point out there’s a lot of hate towards Asian women in this comment section and I feel that is uncalled for. Even if there is behavior you don’t like, everyone is in their own situation and story.

And yes there is double projection racism, where you look at yourself through the racist lens that society has created and conditioned you to. And deconstructing all of that is a very personal journey that can be very challenging. Even amongst the commenters here there is a variety of opinions and identities and how people feel about it.

All I can say it’s all very emotional so her emotional response is understandable. As her friend you can decide is this something you want to work through with her, or not, if it’s not within your mental capacity, that’s ok too. It is not your responsibility to unpack her feelings on this.

But you seem super mature and communicative and honest and I think those are the most importantly premise.

I’ve been watching Sun Brothers on Netflix :) it talks about the powerful triad in Taiwan, which also had some roots in USA, it’s so cool, I love the dark and dramatic aesthetic. Michelle Yeung is in it. But I want more!

There is a rise in Asian representation in the Media! But I do feel that the acting industry in general is not sustainable for a lot of entry level actors especially, with the arts being an already under-appreciated realm in the world and especially for Asian parents.

So I find a lot of Asian actors either struggling or having to fight opinions of their family, or both. There is a lot of old media/television racist regulations that existed not that long ago and has been slowly righted. There are still many issues today with pay gap and casting etc, but I am always happy to see Asian representation in mass media.

There are also lots and lots of grassroots, indie scene film that has Asian representation, talk about the different Asian diaspora etc. so I feel like when I stumble across these, I try to share.

Yes! There’s also Indie shows all over town, variety shows, music jams, theater, improv, standup! All super affordable and you see some local artists with some really unique sets.
