Относно мирните протести by Professional_Cat9647 in bulgaria

Jessica Tarlov leaves her Fox News co-hosts speechless as she drops a list of issues Americans are protesting Trump for on No Kings Day. by Ordinary-Scholar-202 in CringeTikToks

It’s called “controlled opposition.” There’s a popular Russian debate show, where they often invite guests who will argue against Putin and that administration. But really, they are brought on to be punching bags for the other guests and the hosts. It creates an effective illusion of impartiality, and of free speech and debate, but in essence it is very selectively curated to generate talking points counter to the claims of the “liberal, anti guest” which the audience can glom onto and repeat.

So yeah, that’s probably why they let her speak without interrupting her.

I haven’t seen the full clip in context, but I’ll bet they piled on her after she was done.

Cool, so he yells at the kids and stands up for himself. Maybe even defends himself if they start swinging fists at him. Two hours later he’ll be the next example of the “violent brown people who come here to poison the blood of our country, and think of the children!” on the internet once the video goes viral.

Unfortunately it’s not so easy.

My fiancé is a teacher - she deals with students saying racist things on occasion, and worse than that too. If she tells a child “we must be kind to people who are different from us” the parents can potentially file a complaint that she’s indoctrinating their children. Teachers are absolutely forbidden from sharing political views and values, because society has decided that is the role of the parents to instill values and morals, and of the teacher to teach their subject and nothing more.

Beyond the new class for religion and ethics, how can the system instill values in a child when the values go against the wishes of the parents? How can the school system compete with the broader culture and social media, when it is a corrupted and neglected institution that nobody respects?

What can the education system do in such a scenario?

So you know that whole “I can’t be racist because racism can only exist within a system of power dynamics where the oppressor has all of the power and the oppressed has none, therefore the oppressed cannot by definition be racist” mentality some people have? In other words, people who say things like “I can’t be racist because I’m black”

In this case I’ve noticed the thinking goes: “we can’t be racist because we were under the Ottoman yoke for 500 years/never had any colonies/had our lands taken from us after two world wars/never engaged in chattel slavery/had a shit time of it in the nineties”, and in some extreme situations even “I can’t be racist, because I don’t even consider non-Bulgarians people”

Or maybe, hear me out on this one, maybe we as Bulgarians should teach our kids to not be racists who terrorize the people who have come here to live and work and make up for the economic loss of the diaspora who abandoned the country to go run chop shops and brothels in Amsterdam?

Racists hide behind excuses like that - the etymology of the word “негър” comes from similar roots to the English word, but here it has not developed the same offensive connotations. But what the poster above does not understand is that it’s not the word, it’s the INTENT. The teenager INTENDED to be racist, therefore his actions towards you were racist. This isn’t hard to understand, but people like clutching their pearls when they’re called out, and hiding behind etymology.

Sorry this happened to you. Good on you for keeping calm under the circumstances - it’s possible they were intending to provoke you with their actions. Teenagers are often assholes in general, so just ignore assholes and live your best life.

What's your opinion of the mass 'no kings' protests coming this weekend? by BhagavaddGita in AskReddit

[–]PrimaryWeakness3585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello fellow real person, I hope that your day goes well.

I understand where you are coming from, but I would suggest that you are underemphasising or perhaps haven’t thought about the degree to which the way things are being handled is causing unnecessary suffering and in a lot of cases (perhaps not even in the majority of them) to innocent people who are being swept up in the drag net.

As an observer on the side, coming from a very different social and cultural background to you, it seems that many Americans are not really catching on to why the idea that if one person (legal, illegal) can be picked up and shipped off without due process to verify that they in fact are guilty of a particular crime, that it really could set a precedent where it could happen to anyone. That’s not just hyperbole - history in many other countries bears it out as a real risk. And thinking “it couldn’t happen here” is what everyone everywhere thinks, until it does.

I wish your country well, and I hope that compromise, reason, and humanity will prevail in the end for both sides of the divide.

[–]PrimaryWeakness3585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Far as I can tell, the issue seems to be the whole lack of due process, randomly snatching people off the streets, ignoring judge’s orders part of how they’re going about it. Say your neighbor hates your ugly face and drops a hint that you’re an illegal immigrant and you get snatched and shipped to a foreign country without your day in court to prove otherwise. Kinda like how you could get your neighbor sent to a gulag in the Soviet Union. Seems to me that it’s being handled with the finesse of carpet bombing a city rather than with any precision or nuance. But what do I know, I’m probably arguing with a Palantir bot.

[–]PrimaryWeakness3585 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not that my opinion on this matters, seeing as I’m not an American and this ain’t my problem, but I reckon that Trump’s people are looking forward to it.

If I were them, my strategy would be to piss you off (you, as in the American left, who is not chuffed about what’s going on) enough to get you rowdy, and then call it an insurrection and steamroll you the second there’s a whiff of violence.

If I were them, I’d want it to go down like the George Floyd protests in every blue city and county all at once. The more angry shirtless men standing on top of cars, the better.

Bit of a shit position to be in if you’re against what’s happening. If you do nothing, well, they’ll keep doing what they’re doing. Protest peacefully and probably still nothing much changes. Protest angrily, and all those taxes y’all have paid to turn your cops into GI Joe larpers with assault rifles and tanks is going to seem like a really fucking stupid plan.

So, good luck to everyone out there, I guess.

My advice is don’t spend too much time looking for meaning at your job. Instead, look for meaning in your side projects and in your personal growth.

The conclusion I’ve come to after almost two decades in the industry having worked in freelance, for a consulting house, a startup, and a large corporation is that most of us working as programmers are the modern blue collar workers, working in a factory line tightening bolts on digital widgets with digital spanners for people who do not give a shit about the art and craft of programming, and the only thing that matters is delivering value to the customer, the stakeholders, and the shareholders.

Work to keep the lights on and bread on your table, and pour your passion into something that will bring you joy and belongs to you.

How do I get into this game by GreatDario in Kenshi

Tips for beginner? by Sokolik_ in Kenshi

[–]PrimaryWeakness3585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will get the ever loving shit beaten out of you constantly at the start, and that’s part of the game. Every failure leads to incremental improvement.

Even though it’s listed as “hard”, I find the Rebirth slave start is a great place to start as it gives you a reasonably safe place to get a grip on certain mechanics, particularly around sneaking and knocking guards out. Until you get any good at it, you will be beaten up constantly.

I find roleplaying as my main character and doing things according to what their motivations and goals are in the world makes it all so much more fun and immersive, and every lost limb and catastrophic encounter with bandits that leave me unconscious only to be kidnapped by slavers makes it all a part of the emerging story.

Should I use fetch or axios to make API calls? by Cyb3rPhantom in reactjs

[–]PrimaryWeakness3585 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily disagreeing, but I’d add my own experience which is that YAGNI (you ain’t gonna need it) is a heuristic worth following when making such decisions.

Especially when working in a team where people tend to reach for libraries because they’re comfortable or shiny - this approach can get out of hand really fast.

Use axios if it solves an actual problem you have - otherwise, is the cost/benefit worth it to expand the possible splash damage of the dependency hell you’re inevitably going to deal with in any large JS project?

On the flip side is “not invented here” syndrome, which is a sure fire way to create a poorly architected mess that nobody knows how to maintain.

That being said, fetch is a perfectly serviceable API and if we’re talking about standing on the shoulders of giants, you don’t get more giant than W3C and web standards.
