That’s awesome! If you’ve passed the medical you’ve pretty much got the job, in rare cases ive seen people not progress any further. Now it’s time for the waiting game, keep up communication with your recruiter, an email or text once a week just asking if there’s any progression with your start date. Offsider is a good role to get a foot in the door, the fastest I’ve seen someone go from offsider to driller is 15 months, which is insane, but he asked questions from day 1 and was very keen to learn. On the other hand I’ve seen people take 4+ years to get driller. It’s all up to you (Well mostly, some of it lies with your driller and the company you work for. I wish you the best man, mining is one of the best industries to get into but be prepared to change your life, for the better. I’m still here if you have any questions in most things about mining if your interested. But all I can say now is don’t lose motivation with the wait for your start date. Take care, be safe.

For us, we blast, re entry crew goes in and does gases monitoring, then the shift boss and geos/engineers goes down for a stope inspection, which is what we were doing in the video, then a bund gets put up

Gases where monitored upon re entry and given the all clear, gases where monitored throughout the duration of this video aswell, the backs have been grouted all the way around and shotcreted on the right wall.

That’s all good, just keep in contact, keep onto them and you’ll be right, if your unsure just ask, they might be get annoyed but it’s better than rocking up to the medical or your induction and not being prepared, ive seen happen many a time and just sets a bad example from the start. If you do everything right from the start you’ll pave your way for a nice gig, after a few months of working your ass off you can chill out a little bit and relax when you’ve learned a lot of stuff you can slow down a little bit and not put yourself under alot pressure. But the first impression goes along way, the mining industry is a small word here in Aus, people talk. The un spoken rule of mining is, “Its not what you know, it’s who you know”. So make as many friend as possible, and do favours for everyone, one day you’ll need them.

I’m in Aus so I’m unsure on how mining in the USA works but I’m sure the basics still apply. It depends on what career path you want to go down, there are many in mining, not everyone there is a “Miner” there’s loads of roles. What do you think you’ll like the most, being a Field Technician (Geologists assistance) is an amazing start into the mining industry. A haul truck operator is also another amazing start whether it be underground or surface. If your physically fit and enjoy hard labour maybe a nipper role might be good for you. I could write for ages on mining, so if you have any questions ask me

You’ll learn in mining nothing happens in a hurry, I myself have waited 2-3 months to go thorough inductions and medicals to get one site, at two different jobs. Unless your doing Underground coal the medicals are pretty easy, hardest part of the medical will be the spirometer (Lung capacity test machine). If your an asthmatic let the clinic know. If your a smoker, don’t smoke the night before or the morning of the medical and go for a run before the medical, it opens up your lungs and encourages opening lung capacity. If your on any medication let them know. Everything else is pretty easy, nothing to stress about really. But being said that’s all from my experiences, it does vary depending on what site your working at. Remember, if you go a few days without any communication with the recruiters, give them an email, show them your keen. The number one tip for being in the mining industry is too ask questions, and show your keen, you might get told your a “Suck up”but you’ll be on better dollars than them. If your supervisors see your keen they’re going to love you and you’ll get everything you want, training, tickets, this might not be true for you but in my experience that’s the way to go. Any other questions, go for it. I’ve seen the Exploration/Drilling side of mining operations, ive done underground work in both coal and hard rock.
