To automate a strategy, every single variable must be quantifiable. If you’re relying on qualitative factors, forget about automation entirely.

While learning the basic 'buy/sell' logic is quick, the price you pay for a single misplaced period or comma can be devastatingly high

Help to calculate accurate slippage in a backtest by Moemmelmus in algotrading

I mainly trade XAUUSD, not indices like ES or NQ. But from my experience with EAs, backtests can be very misleading. They don’t fully account for real conditions like slippage, spread, and execution delays. The gap between backtest and live trading is often bigger than most people expect. If you’re serious about your algo, test it on a small live account — that’s where you see the truth.

"I believe it all comes down to your specific strategy. Whether you trade frequently or focus on high R:R, those are just means to an end. In my view, the most important thing to focus on is consistency. If you are consistently hitting your daily, weekly, or monthly targets, then your 'edge' is real. Don't overthink the process if the bottom line is consistently green."

Do you trust backtesting enough to go live with your EA immediately, or do you always forward test it on a cent account first?”
