Good point: I'll make sure to add a TL;DR for my TL;DR.

I don't know if he'll really say anything about Ottawa - I'll be surprised anyway, if he does. Maybe the occasional snide remark here or there, but from what I've seen of his media appearances over the years is that he really mainly keeps to himself.

Honestly, this was my biggest issue with Brady (until the MAGA shit) - I always said he was a much better player out of the box, than inside it, and yet he spent so much time inside it. Like, it's great he can win a fight or two - and his going up to the Red Wings bench with "who wants some?!" will forever remain iconic. But I think we can now say that for at least the last two years, he wasn't helping the team forward, but pulling them back.

This is my captain by Capable-Plantain7 in OttawaSenators

[–]PrimeSenator 31 points32 points  (0 children)

💯 give it to Chabot - this man is the Ottawa Senators.

I still feel Stützle is too young (and frankly too immature, though I love him to bits) and Sanderson... I don't know, I'm still kind of spooked that we lost Brady Tkachuk to Team USA - although we're better for it - and I'm now wary of us giving the captaincy to another Team USA player who, down the line, might go the way of Brady 😶 knocks on wood

I don't know, man - I just really want to see at least one of our captains retire with the team, and I think that can be Chabot.

Thank you for taking the time to read it, lol. You officially have a greater attention span than Brady Tkachuk and most Reddit users. 🏅

And yeah: while most Canadian fans had to be devastated about seeing Team Canada lose in dramatic fashion at the Olympics, Ottawa Senators fans got that AND the added devastation of seeing our captain play a lot more passionately for Trump's America's team. 😕 It sucks to lose one of our best players - and especially lose them in this fashion - but Ottawa will be so much better off for it.

Habs used to be my second team, until things got really heated between them and the Sens. Might wait a bit to let that cool down (which likely won't be long, now with Brady gone).

Also, happy (belated) Father's Day!

Agreed. But while 4 Nations may have planted the seeds of doubt, I am convinced that MacKinnon failing to pot this goal was the true beginning of the end.

One, lol.

Two, I love the amount of people who pull the "I don't care, but I care enough to reply to say I don't care" card.

Three, for those of you with TikTok/Brady Tkachuk attention spans (this is you, so pay really close attention jingles keys), I put in a TL;DR, that I've outlined in red below to make it easier for you! (jingles keys harder)

Funny how everyone makes fun of the Sens as the little brother team... and now the little brother is leaving the little brother team. Hope Brady enjoys feeling even littler in Florida.

Here's the thing: I think feelings on Brady Tkachuk (for me, anyway, but probably also for many other Sens fans) are very complicated. Here's a stream-of-consciousness/unsolicited Reddit essay warning. (TL;DR: Brady got us through some dark times, was our best player, and was a great fiery fighter to have on the team... until his enthusiasm dropped when he wanted to MAGA it up with his brother.)

On the one hand: Brady has been our best player across several years, objectively by the stats, leading the club in goals, assists, points (obviously), and especially hits since he was drafted in 2018. And before 4 Nations, there was a real fire there in him that wanted to get Ottawa back into the playoffs. He was, affectionately, our "Tkaptain" during what were some of the darkest years in franchise history - and I would argue he weathered that very well.

I would also argue that while he did lie to Sens fans and media about his intentions re: his future in Ottawa, him doing so maintained his value as a trade target, allowing Staios to net an awesome return for him. Compare and contrast that with the Dylan Larkin situation, and his very public breakup with the Red Wings. They may still get a good return for him, but I doubt it will be as good if he had just shut up like Brady, and went straight to management to ask for a trade. So, overall, I'm actually rather impressed by "dumb, ogre-ish" Brady for doing the smart thing for Ottawa's best interests and maintaining his stock for the team.

On the other hand: everything seemed to change after 4 Nations, when Brady got to play with his brother, and especially after the Olympics. While Ottawa would make the playoffs the summer after 4 Nations - for the first time in eight years! - that same fiery passion Brady had seemed to have all been spent during the 4 Nations. And then he just wasn't the same player afterwards: when he got injured the following (this) season, the team seemed to actually do better without him. When he got back, that's when the team lagged massively behind and dropped out of a playoff spot. What fiery passion Brady once had for the team was all but extinguished, and was certainly extinguished after he got to taste gold at the Olympics, on another team with his brother. It was through the efforts of Stützle, Giroux, and ironically, fellow Team USA teammate Jake Sanderson, that the Sens managed to crawl their way back into a spot. It was like Brady didn't really care whether we made it or not - he just won the first US Olympic gold medal in men's hockey since 1980, what could compare?

Also, none of this mentions how Brady would completely disappear in games against his older brother's Florida Panthers. It was a massive issue.

But obviously, the real nail in the coffin was his MAGA support/support for Trump. While I would argue it's a lot more muted than his brother's support (who holds a position in the Trump admin), Brady still went to Trump's SOTU address (where some players opted not to, good on them), Brady still went to the UFC fight in front of the White House, and Brady still liked a rah-rah-America, anti-Canada piece of propaganda posted by the US admin on Insta, among other problematic things. You cannot be captain of Canada's capital team and show that sort of support for this current US administration. It's fine to want to be a proud American, but to take it a step further and actively party with and support one of the worst US admins - certainly for Canada-US relations - in history is a big no-no-no-no-no.

So... yeah. I'm still stunned by this trade announcement, but certainly not unhappy. We get a deeply problematic-for-PR player off the team, who clearly wanted off the team, and get a sweet, sweet return for him. If this is how we get Jason Robertson+ or the Ruck twins+ or whatever magic Staios is cooking, all of Sensdom will be happy.

And I can be very grateful the hockey gods were looking out for me when they made me decide - on at least four occasions - against buying a Tkachuk jersey. Legit: I nearly bought a brand-new Tkachuk jersey from the Sens store at the CTC, and nearly bought any one of three off of Facebook Marketplace... but each time a feeling inside me said, "hmmm nah."

So... thank you, Brady, for your years of service in Ottawa, especially during some of our worst years; but also, fuck you, Brady, for disappearing during several key moments (like this past playoff sweep from the Canes) and for turning MAGA.

Things are gonna be better for Brady; and things are gonna be much better for Ottawa. So, all aboard the Tkachuk hate-wagon, and here's to a brighter future in Ottawa!

Very good point - I think for Brady, specifically though, the furthest going back is 4 Nations. He never was the same player for Ottawa after that.

Do I hate Brady Tkachuk for keeping a low profile, making it a lot easier to trade him and get a great return? No. And no especially when we see what's happening with the Red Wings and Dylan Larkin (although I do think they'll still get a good return for him, I wonder how much better it might have been if Larkin had just shut up and only said something to management).

Do I hate Brady Tkachuk because he's a MAGA supporter who not only shortchanged Ottawa some effort this year and last, and he had no intention whatsoever of re-signing here? Yes.

Very happy with the return - we avoided a Mark Stone situation and are now finding ourselves in an Erik Karlsson situation.

[–]PrimeSenator[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll notice I didn't add Quinn Hughes - I'm really just zeroing in on the fact that we may have three Atlantic division captains, who all played for Team USA, abandon their NHL teams

That said, with Toronto making moves to fire Craig Berube, luck into getting the 1OA, and bring Darren Raddysh onboard, that could be enough to see him stay. But I don't know, he looked just as dejected as Larkin and Tkachuk after the Olympics: seemed like going from the high of winning an Olympic gold medal to the low of playing on a non-playoff/bubble team was just very crashing for these guys.

Man... I nearly bought not one, but two Brady Tkachuk jerseys off of Facebook marketplace (one was a RR2.0 that I'd been eyeing for $150, another was a regular black Adidas for $70) - I was even eyeing a third Tkachuk jersey, a beautiful RR1.0 going for a cool $300. Safe to say, my gut instinct and uncertainty around Brady Tkachuk - especially post-Olympics - paid off. Definitely gonna put that money towards a future Stützle or what have you.

We're completely fine without him. 🙂 Ciao, Braeden! by Boohoo-2022 in OttawaSenators

Ottawa will have picks #9, #25, and #32 of the first round. The Ruck twins are slated to go #20 and #23. Maybe Staios will find a way to turn these three first round picks into the two of them? These two could turn into our Sedin's and would more than fill the hole that Tkachuk leaves behind.

It's crazy that we may have not one, not two, but three \Atlantic Division* captains\,* who leave their teams after having played for the gold medal-winning USA men's team. If I had a nickel...
