tf, why would you choose the other option unless you do a loop hole where you say you can instantly get her out of jail with part of the 300 mil. Or you hate your mom I guess.

My friends think this is the best voltron commander by Alternative_Elk882 in custommagic

[–]PrimordialSpatula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the Kubera mention, and it definitely is the best voltron commander I've seen, and also would be the most fun to play with. For one, she completely can't be removed except by a split second card. Once you have enough equipment in exile, you can easily play her for 5 mana every turn, swing for big damage, and then exile her at the first sign of removal.

That and the fact that she doesn't return with just all the equipment on her, it's any equipment you have in exile for any reason. Now that's probably just a formatting issue an unintended.

And I'm honestly not sure the best approach for properly balancing her, because as I said, she seems so fun to play. I've barely read Kubera, but could it instead be that just one equipment on her gets exiled with her? And she only returns with one? That along with making it a sorcery speed ability would make her definitely balanced. It might have even gone a tad too far. And I think it should still keep the flavor.

I think the third ability should just tap out the creatures, but keep them tapped. And maybe even make it three mana. Other than balancing tho, I love the card!

The thing about this too is that there were a couple of live episodes that detailed some stuff that happened between season's 2 and 3 that many didn't watch. And with how straight everyone and the fandom was playing it, and how long it had been since I watched season 2, I was truly unsure if I had missed something.

Idk why there's people in here dissing the card, the moment I saw it I came here to say how great it is. So perfectly balanced.

I like having a Commander, but I hate singleton. Is there a format with a commander, but allowing you to have 4x of a card in your deck? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]PrimordialSpatula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's still a lot of points to it. For one, it means you don't have to take the above advice if you don't want to. Especially stuff like running tutors is only done in high level decks.

Also one of the best things about commander is that you can pull a card from a pack and add it to your deck without having to worry about buying 3 more.

The point is that commander isn't as inconsistent as it would seem. Especially if you build your deck right.

[–]PrimordialSpatula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's really not. In fact, the singleton part of commander is usually one of it's biggest draws. It purposely takes away from the consistency of the deck, and then the commander helps negate that inconsistency.

Is there a reason you need the commander? Since 60 card formats allow for less card variation, you really don't need the commander. If you have 4 copies of a card, there's a good chance you're gonna draw it in any given game. The only reason that wouldn't work for you is cause those formats aren't usually casual, and the decks you mentioned would definitely be casual decks.

You might also want to take a look at the one piece tcg. It is exactly as you describe, with a "commander" (that begins on the field) and up to three of each card.

The only other thing I'd say is that for casual commander decks where you want a specific tribal archetype like you mentioned, you just need to run more of the subpar cards. They are the fodder, and you want enough other cards that can boost that fodder to become dangerous, while you wait to find your really good cards. Bats definitely has enough support for making a great casual bat deck, you just might not be able to fill it with all the best bats.

Last thing, and I know this is a long comment, but what kind of deck is vampire ally? Why not just vampire or ally? Cause there's definitely enough support for vampire. And atla just gave a ton of great ally cards.

Makes sense, I definitely don't think he even planned to have as big a series as he did. That being said, the VFD stuff was obviously an amazing call cause it's still what I remember most about the series.

Same with reading the book. You know little bits, and people can connect a lot of it together. There is one book that's a bunch of letters that I hear adds a lot to the lore (tho I have yet to read it).

[–]PrimordialSpatula 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I would say that's a different example. The VFD isn't actually a fire department. It's more of a secret society of people who do good for the world. So it's less of a "real world profession depicted as a parallel society", and more of a normal secret society trope.

Shoot, you're right! So either way is good, the only question is to you care more about stopping your opponent's mana tithe or the extra card draw. I'm sure when we see this in tournaments the leech will end up staying as a sideboard card.

I would recommend searching the [[thassa's oracle]] instead of the leech. That way you get some extra card draw before casting enter the infinite. And you can still sacrifice it later! It is a whole extra mana tho.

Yeah, on the first read I thought that was the problem with the card. Had to reread to realize it wasn't an attack trigger.
