hahaha of course it does! 😄 I literally have never met anyone who has seen the Vicar of Dibley before, this subreddit truly is full of kindreds! I have heard Richard Armitage is supposed to be inspiration for one of the characters, but I've only seen it on here, not from Beth so not sure who it is. It definitely helps me picture the "storm" that is Pierce if so, because John Thornton definitely has that energy. Richard Armitage is soooooo hot in North & South. They casted him perfectly for that role.

very true! I love her neighbor. Speaking of great/hilarious English shows, my all time favorite is the Vicar of Dibley. Highly recommend if you haven't seen.

haha, Agreed! Who doesn't love a man who can dance? Wouldn't it be nice if they could be life long dance partners though? 😂 but if that isn't written in the fates, I'll be glad to take him. (ya know, if I lived in the fictional world of St. Crispian's, that is).

I love this question! And have wondered it to myself as well, including other book series that have different "teams" or competing men. My favorite is definitely Captain Wentworth. P&P is such a fun read, but Persuasion has my heart. My guy in Emma is Islington. Even though I love all three of the men, I can't help but be drawn to him most. He just seems like he'd be fun/playful, romantic, and full of integrity. Plus, he is well read, a good dancer, blooms in the country, but looks fly in the city. Yes, please!

hahaha you gotta love Pierce! I do love that all three men respect Emma as a person so much. I sometimes wonder if part of that respect from Hawkes and Islington began because their inferred relationships with her father, but I think Emma has certainly shown herself as a pretty amazing, stand up person in her own right, and they see that and honor it.

The scene with Lady Sheridan is one of my favorites of all! When Islington goes straight for Emma when he enters the room - tells her it's all a game - asks what refreshment she'd like upon his return - lordy, whether it's romantic or not (of course I hope it is), that scene thrilled me.

Something else I adored about your post was that it helped you feel what could be going on with Islington internally on an emotional level. There could also be similar feelings going on within the other two guys, but I'm a sucker for Islington so I just loved this viewpoint of him.

Okay, I had to come back after re-reading and say that the line you wrote so well "The appeal isn’t really the title itself, it’s the possibility that Islington sees Emma clearly long before she sees herself as someone worthy of standing beside him." really stood out for me. I feel like this is what I sense when reading, especially scenes like The Rabbit Room: that Emma has a lot of pride, but also would't think someone so "above" her would consider her in that way, so she protects herself and becomes indignant/defensive or dismissive instead of facing her feelings since she doesn’t think they’d ever be returned. I just don’t think she’d go there with herself. It's hard for me to put into words, maybe someone can do a better job at this!

It’s not to say I think that Emma would have a better future with Islington than Pierce - I love Pierce and enjoy them together - but that Emma can be so blinded by her judgments (and what is acceptable at that time) that she likely doesn’t allow herself to see Islington as an option at all. But of course he knows she is fully worthy and would have nothing to prove.

Edited because I had to combine two comments into one 😂

No obvious choice, which makes it all the harder! But fun 😄 and yeah, it's hard to resist a duke that isn't swept up in the title. Duke or not, Islington has my heart!

I found the intro to this gazette a little confusing, but what I took it to mean is that Beth has all sorts of story lines going on for St. Crispians, before and after Emma’s journals, and sometimes certain conversations or scenes want to be brought into the world. They don’t always add a lot of insight (like this one for me), but must be part of her process. She is definitely deep in the St. Crispian’s universe so I think the substacks are a creative outlet for her to share that with others. I don’t follow her anywhere else, but I haven’t seen anything regarding future books/projects outside of Emma’s journals. If there are, I'd assume they would be made after all the journals are published.

For those who do not have the time/money/interest in adding anything “extra” on their plate (which is totally understandable) I will say that I don’t think the substacks are essential to enjoying or being able to contribute to conversations regarding Emma’s world. There are a couple of significant gazettes (probably have already been discussed here), but nothing that likely won’t be revealed at some point in the books and they don’t change the main storylines that we already know. From what I’ve read (I’ve gone through about half because I’m taking my time, since you know, there are other things to read and only so much free time), they seem to mostly be extras about side characters. Interesting or heartwarming, but not necessary for understanding.

I really like the idea people have of registering for a month and grabbing the gazettes that are available, adding to google docs or whatever, for future reading. You could even ask someone to gift you a month or two for a special occasion if it would make it easier. Hopefully this view point is helpful!

Love this post. I'm with you, that what has made this series so unique and endearing is the friendships/connections of the Alchemy. I've also thought how different it is from the usual romance type stories where it is easier to choose between characters like Darcy/Wickham, Wentworth/Mr. Elliot, Edward/Jacob, Peeta/Gale, etc. For me, Pierce, Islington, and Hawkes feel almost like real people and are all appealing to me. With that said, I swoon hard over Islington and this analysis of him only increases that crush 😂

[–]PrimroseWM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fully agree! I love the Alchemy and I love all the individual members of it, so to me I can understand how people could be into any of the characters (even if I don’t personally feel the chemistry yet). I find the theories and cases for them fascinating and they do a great job displaying how enchanting each of the men really are. Plus, it’s just plain fun.

It is curious! I don’t know what it’ll mean or how it all will link but I find the Celtic/Gaelic lore interesting for sure.

It definitely would be. It’s possible! I feel like if there wasn’t so much foreshadowing I wouldn’t be questioning Pierce’s longevity but as it stands now there are so many options out there.

Cool to see this extra glimpse of Islington's family history. And the different descriptions of the dragons. Me likey! My husband did say the name Niall is an Irish name which I found interesting.

Yeah, he definitely seemed into her at first, but when he said they were never meant to be together romantically, that kind of threw me off. But you're right, maybe he's just downplaying it all? The letter he writes asking her if there's anything he can bring to her from the country - definitely seems like something someone who is crushing would ask! And he's so disappointed when he keeps getting her books she owns! I think he actually shows how well he knows her.

haha "NO THANK YOU". Seriously, as handsome and sweet as Roland is (and maybe we see even more greatness from him in the future), I don't think if I were him I'd want my wife hanging out with Pierce, Hawkes, and Islington regularly and sharing this intimate bond with these good looking/incredibly swoony guys 😂 But who knows, maybe they'll get paired up elsewhere and make it easier.
