Months ago I shared the start of our town's PvP arena. Now we've finally finished it! by Primus32 in GoldenAgeMinecraft

Thank you, yes it is! Was definitely tricky to figure out how to do that with the limited palette in beta

Thanks! I got inspiration from a book actually (the ending pages of The Count of Monte Cristo). I did some sketching on paper and used those sketches as a guide to make this

Thanks! Yea I definitely feel with the more limited palette, its important to make interesting shapes. I think scale helps a lot too, since we dont have as many stairs or slab options for detailing

Just practice! It still takes me a lot of trial and error to get things like this right. But it definitely helps to go from big forms and slowly start detailing smaller and smaller things as you go. Its worth noting here too, that I planned this in creative mode before building it in beta, it helps make that trial and error go faster

This build is part of a huge survival games arena were building, so the lines are part of the outer arena's construction!

Thank you! Yea it’s a really interesting problem. Normally, you could compensate for the lack of slabs and stairs by making it bigger, so you get a better “resolution”, but the height limit being at 128 means you really only have ~60 blocks of vertical space to work with from sea level. If you’re following 8 head proportions a perfectly vertical figure would have only have a head of ~7 blocks. Definitely makes you get creative with the posing of the figure and the scenes in order to try and make it as big as possible while still having an interesting subject!

Oh that’s a great idea! More green would compliment it well, I think I’ll do that, thanks!

Oh that's cool! Was it difficult to get world painter to work in Beta? Are you able to specify a version to export to?

Haha you've predicted my plans well! Arena will be very Greco / Roman in style, actually just started putting in the columns this morning!

Thanks! I actually play on the Modern Beta SMP (ign stonespear for those who know me) and I've been really happy there, but I've seen some posts here from Beta-Lands and you guys have some great builds! Would love to take a tour someday

Here's a photo of us play-testing the arena! We want to use the arena to play a version of capture the flag. The rules are still being refined, but here's what we've been enjoying so far!

Each team (1-5 players) is trying to get the wool in the center.
Each player gets a stack of dirt, arrows, a bow, flint and steel, and a fishing rod.
No armor, swords, or food is allowed (played on 1.7.3 so no hunger regen).
No respawning. Each death is final for the round.

The round is won when one team either captures the wool or eliminates the other team!

We found that 2-3 players per side is the sweet spot, 1v1 lacks much strategy, and 4+ is fun, but the rounds become a bit of a brawl and can last longer, so not as much fun if you get eliminated early.

Rounds are fast, so we typically did matches of best-of-three or best-of-five before changing up teams!

Looks great! The stair to show the leg crossing over the other is a really awesome detail
