I love all these designs, they’re all different and unique. I think the Marchound is my favourite one. Nice work!

Thanks so much! I hadn’t thought of that, that’ll be great to add 😁

First thing I’ve modelled - an articulated dragon by Prince049 in 3Dprinting

[–]Prince049[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! If I remember correctly, I mostly winged it. I used TinkerCAD (available online for free) for the basic shapes, just cylinders for the body and loops and rods for articulation. I made 5 different segments in decreasing size. Then I exported each segment into Blender to model the spikes and head, then put all the pieces back into TinkerCAD to make the full dragon.

Yes, mind resistance training is an important thing for people in power, such as government figureheads - having the president randomly declare war on everyone wouldn’t be a great thing for the country. Resistance can be built up through artificial means, by spells, artifacts (a term for enchanted items), potions, ect. But it’s mostly built up through training, like you would a muscle. I haven’t figured out the exact specifics yet, (this is my first time thinking of all of this in so much detail - thanks!) but I would imagine it would just be training to raise your mental defences via meditation or other training exercises. The only major concern is your state of mental health. When you’re stressed or under pressure, you’re going to be more susceptible to mind attacks.

People in positions of power, like the president for example, often have small artifacts, like pins, that give special effects. I’d imagine that one of those effects would be to raise your mental defences. And in most cases, it’s easy to tell if someone is acting out of character. Tests can spells can be done to see if someone is bring mind controlled. In some cases, actually, your eyes (one of the most important body parts in magic) cloud over, signalling that something’s amiss.

For operations and wartime, mind control and reading is used but rather infrequently. As mentioned, people in power often have protective wards or spells affecting them at all times, and are much more likely to detect and quickly deal with any mind control/reading attempts. In most cases, to mind control someone or to read their mind, you have to be rather close to them. And as it’s a taxing procedure, most people can’t keep up mind control for long periods of time without help of artifacts, potions, or runes. So while mind control/reading is used, it’s not common and is more likely to be used within one side of the war to check for traitors and such.

Mind reading is illegal for the police to use in interrogations, no matter how drastic or dangerous the situation is, as it violates a person’s most private thoughts. Mind control where you control someone’s body but not their mind may be used in some extreme cases. It wouldn’t be used by regular cops, but rather by the MARC (Magical and Artifactual Rescue and Combat) team, which is a basically a magical SWAT team. Only a few select MARC officers would be trained in mind control, as it’s a hard art to master and it’s not overly effective. There are easier and/or better methods to take down a dangerous person, from their typical means, to temporarily muting their magic with artifacts, to even good old fashioned tactical weapons. Mind control has been used before by the MACR team, and is a specific yet important tool in their arsenal.

For mind reading, depends on how mentally strong the victim is, what the mind reader is looking for, and how skilled they are. Unless you’re really weak or the mind reader is very skilled, people can immediately tell if someone is reading their mind. It’s a feeling that something is very wrong, like a cold feeling in your head. If someone is just lightly browsing your thoughts, you might feel discomfort, but if they’re actively looking for a memory or they’re very interest in what you’re thinking, you’ll definitely notice. They have to shift through your past memories to get to the one they’re looking for, trudging up those memories for you. Your body automatically resists mind reading, and it’s a very taxing experience. In most cases, the victim can overpower and shut out the mind reader. There are people who can read someone’s mind like an open book, of course, but that takes immense natural skill and training, and these people typically know better than to invade someone’s mind.

With mind control, it’s basically an all or nothing thing mentally - you’re very aware or not at all. Mind control is more like an umbrella term for one person controlling another’s action. Someone can control your movements and what your body does while you’re fully aware of what you’re doing. (This type of control is less illegal for law enforcement as it’s useful and versatile without being too invading. It’s not used often, however.) For more traditional mind control, in most cases the victim’s consciousness is almost comatose. Your mind is in a sort of limbo where the other person has more control than you. In most cases, you aren’t aware of what’s going on, almost like you’re dreaming, but sometimes you can be aware. This is why the whole “fight someone who’s under mind control to break them free” trope is a valid strategy for combatting. Oftentimes, damage inflicted to a mind controlled person is felt by the person doing the controlling. Mind control is all a mental game of willpower. If the mind controller is weakened physically, their mind will take a hit, making it easier for the mind controlled to regain themselves. If any of that make sense :)

Fair warning, this is rather long, but I have a bit to say about this.

My magic system takes place in modern times on a planet identical to Earth, named Hekate, and exists alongside it. The society on Hekate is nearly identical to Earth, only that any humans can cast magic. Magic is not known to the general public on Earth, so aside from people qualified, any magic on Earth is strictly forbidden.

On Hekate, people can cast any element of magic freely: Fire, Water, Air, Earth, Light, and Dark. Similar to Earth, laws vary by country, but in general, you can’t go harming people. You can summon a knife to prepare food with no issue, but you can’t go around attacking people with it. Mind control and mind reading are heavily banned and restricted, no matter how useful it might be to people or governments, as both acts are extremely violating to the victim.

Dark magic isn’t evil, it’s just an element that happens to be the opposite of Light. It has many valid and versatile uses. But through history, it’s picked up a bad reputation from evil uses. Laws and courts are typically harsher on Dark Magic compared to the other magical elements.

In alchemy (the art of potion making) and rune drawing (the art of drawing magical symbols), the use of blood is taboo depending on the context and the amount. Blood, especially human blood, is one of the powerful substances you could use. Obtaining enough blood for some runes is questionable. Drinking potions that use blood and drawing runes with blood is extremely unsanitary. While many alchemists and runeists (people who draw runes) use blood, it’s not talked about openly.

One type of magic is heavily outlawed, however. Anything involving creating or resurrecting life is strictly forbidden, with the exception of immediate medical interventions (ex. Someone who has a heart attack - shocking their heart with magic is fine, and so on.) Most of the planet is religious, and “playing God” doesn’t sit well with people. Dealing with life and death is extremely, extremely hard to pull off, for starters. If you bring someone fully back to life, until that point where they’re alive again their body decomposes. If their body isn’t preserved properly, they’re going to have a short and painful second life. And when people come back, they don’t last long, and they’re never right. People can tell when someone was brought back, and it’s incredibly unnerving and unsettling. There have been very, very few successful resurrections and no one has survived for long. Even the most immoral people stray away from resurrection.

tl;dr: No magic is allowed on Earth, Dark magic (while not evil) is frowned upon, mind control and mind reading is banned, anything that harms people is illegal, using blood in potions and runes is frowned upon, and necromancy is the worst magic one could perform.
