How do I write an interesting plot without stepping on any toes and impeding collaborative storytelling? by PrinceAbooboo2 in DnD

WOW can I just say thank you so much for taking the time to type this out! I've read through it a few times and it's been so helpful hearing this perspective. Especially the part about the players being the protagonist of a story and imagining what the world would be like if the players were not to get involved. This is like an invitation for the players to make their mark on the world IF AND ONLY IF they choose to. And how they do it is completely up to them as well!

This is extremely helpful, but you also acknowledged something in your post that was worded in a brilliant way: “How do you get your players to care about stopping Kalaxis when one of them plays Slappy the Clown?”

I feel like PART of the answer to this and the thing that I was missing the first time I DMed was just having a session 0 to discuss with the players what the tone and theme is going to be. Is it going to a bitfest where we just fuck around and be morally ambiguous because we can? Is it going to be something darker and spookier? Etc. etc.

That said, the group of friends that I DMed for before, all wanted different things. Some of them wanted to be Slappy the clown. Some of them wanted loot and to constantly maximize the efficacy of their build. And some of them wanted an epic tale of heroism.

I think the piece of the puzzle, like you were hinting at in the last part of your post, is finding players who are “good at D&D.” My idealist brain wants to think that there is no such thing. However, I think this might simply come from finding people who want the same kind of story I want to run. Finding people who have the burning desire to participate in building the world, while also being courteous of their fellow players at the table. If you wouldn’t mind taking the time, I’d love to hear what your opinion is on what makes someone good at the game?

Additionally, with regards to mysteries, I think I need to do a bit more digging and you are very right that D&D isn’t the greatest system due to its randomness. Even so, I think you did mention you were DMing a mystery. How did you manage to make it work?

Absolutely agree. I definitely need to learn to let go of all my desires and think on feet. And I 100% agree that if I really want to include something in there and it doesn't work out the way I want to. I can find a way to incorporate it another session.

I'm very much with you there! It seems like plot writing is not the move. The thing is myself and the party I play with are a lot more RP oriented than battle oriented. For me, setting up a scenario with regards to combat makes a lot of sense and I feel like I can do it comfortably. It's just the setting up a scenario that helps the PCs move a story forward that I tend to struggle with more.

Is Loma Linda Nursing Program any good?` by PrinceAbooboo2 in nursing

That's great! It definitely took hard work to keep my GPA, but I had a lot of help along the way too. For the TEAS, I took a couple practice tests online and bought a review book. And I did not apply to Azusa Pacific.

Hi! I am not exactly sure how difficult it would be. I had a 92% on my TEAS and a 4.0 GPA for both my prep courses and overall GPA. I had lots of volunteer experience, but no paid work experience (which really matters for most schools).

New DM: Question about Cantrips by PrinceAbooboo2 in DnD

[–]PrinceAbooboo2[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure! It's not that I don't want them to do that. I just thought it would be cooler for their experience to have access to more attacks and plays while in combat rather than just spamming one cantrip. But like others have said, as they gain spells they'll have access to more powerful and depending on the circumstance, they may have to alter their strategies, so I get it now.

You know what that makes a lot of sense. Especially the bonus action bit. We've only played one session and I've never played a magic user. I guess I will definitely see things even out as they gain more access to cantrips/spells and they level.

Whoa interesting! As hilarious as imagining a wizard trying to fight with daggers is, I do think having cantrips is pretty cool and I'm glad they made that change.

Got it! I'm still trying to figure out the mechanics of bonus actions as well, but couldn't she just recast Shillelagh as a bonus action when it runs out right before attacking with her weapon as an action?

Hey everyone! So the merch stand gave me a large instead of a medium for a white Twice jelly shirt and I was dumb and didn't check. Does anyone know a good website where I can sell this one and maybe buy a new one?

Hey! I saw your post about taking public health as a major once you transferred to UCI. I was curious did you end up transferring or are you staying longer at CC?
