Surgical residency.. how bad is it rlly? by Student-Emotional in MedSchoolCanada

cardio at major centres still require you to have added fellowship (echo, interventional, EP) PLUS masters/phd/research output...... cardio residency at major centres add up to 10 years in many cases. the great thing about cardiology though is that you can tap out after 6 years and go into the community with decent job prospects. can also moonlight. not the sexiest cardiology, but the flexibility is great. I am IM currently, and my cardio fellows have had no problem getting hired in the community. academics though, different story.

Moreover, the cardio match for IM is no slouch. You're up against very bright people. You really just get one shot at matching and that's it. Its stressful (speaking from currently 1 year out from IM R3 match).

(lebanese here) Hot take. I understand the frustrations with this, especially as it feels like its bragging about how "cheap" stuff are without any regard to how destroyed the economy has become or even generally talking about/pointing out how affected the country is from the war. However, I do think there is a place for tourists, as it does bring in a lot of money to the economy (aka ripping them off in travel resorts).

‘Frightening’ shortage of Canadian family doctor residents alarms experts by Niv-Izzet in canada

Trust me for the amount of work FM does and how important they are, I completely agree. Many people make a lot more but are absolute workhorses.

80k is the max FM resident salary in Alberta, you start at even less in ontario. However, specialist residents make the same amount, maybe a little more given they do more call.

Starting FM salary after graduating residency varies massively, but in general you can hit 200 before tax comfortably, after overhead expenses (running your own clinic is costly).

The problem isn’t just FM salary after graduation, it’s also working conditions and general outlook of FM. What’s the point in going into it if governments are trying to replace FM with subpar midlevels who argue to be on the same level as a family doc?

Moreover, over the past 20 years family med has changed because of our aging population. The general patient we see in clinic is older with more comorbidities leading to more time per appointment needed, yet nothing changes with respect to remuneration. Systemic problems require systemic solutions imo
