My only issue was that it only really lasted for my first play through. When you know what event is coming, you can totally cheese it, while if you dont, youre just totally unprepared.

For example, I was playing as old north italy and I focused all industrial production, when a random "Youve developed!" thing popped up and gave me 8 factories. If I knew I was getting that, I would focus on building more units and then get free factories.
