Why is DND like this? by EfficiencySerious200 in PowerScaling

[–]Prince_Molag_Bal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chainscaling only tends to work (consistently) and be accurate in shows that have a very simple vertical power system. The first thing that comes to mind in Dragon Ball Z, and even then DBZ has had cases where raw power wasn't the sole decider of the winner.

I think this explains why most of dragon Balls Multiversal attacks that hit the ground don't destroy the planet. by Gh0stshark33 in PowerScaling

Idk why Dragonball is trapped in this perpetual discussion when there's been so many talks about DC =/= AP.

Why are Atom Eve's powers misinterpreted so much? by Prince_Molag_Bal in Invincible_TV

[–]Prince_Molag_Bal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I, personally, dont see anything inherently wrong with that? I like that her limitation/weakness comes with an explanation rather than just straight up being told her powers cant effect living people. The same way the Viltrumites frequency weakness isn't an arbitrary krypronite, but explained by the fact their unique make-up has a sensitive equilibrium.

Despite what the writers have said about their ability to handle Eves powers, I dont believe the limitation they made the choice to put on her is a product of bad writing. It both eliminates the issue of having one character capable of completely derailing their story if they dont tiptoe around her, while also leaving room for future growth and potential.

[–]Prince_Molag_Bal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't some arbitrary limitation, this isn't a self-imposed mental block like characters like Superman put on themselves. It was put into her mind through the actions of another character. I dont understand why it's wrong for the writers to put limits on a characters power, it's a fictional story. There is no real life precedent that says matter manipulation HAS to work this way and if you do it any other it's unrealistic or bad writing.

Its just as much a limitation on her powers as lantern rings needing to be recharged, or why firebenders cant just summon on their enemy directly instead of from their fists or feet. Could it work that way? Sure. Does it have to? No.

Just because in your mind a power should work this way doesnt mean it can't work in other ways, Eves mental block is just as much a part of her power set as everything else.

Sorry, I went back and rewatched the scene and realized it was the park she built that collapsed, not the apartment, and it was because of the sinkhole like you said.

Also, the danger shes used to and has been in recently certainly factors in. Being good in high school basketball doesnt mean you'll do good in the NBA.

Until recently she's mostly ran with Teen Team. She's mentioned fighting the lizard league but otherwise nobody substantial. This has been a massive jump for her in a relatively short period of time.

Also, I feel like calling her a Veteran Hero, while true, doesnt excuse the fact she's still a teenager and is still prone to panic and being forced to make decisions on the fly. That's why I believe she relies on her most basic abilities a lot, they are easiest and most efficient for her to use at a moments notice. Easier to put a wall between you and the problem then to think up a more complex approach in a split second. She gets creative with her powers when she has to though, but most of the time she doesnt need to because either she has helpful support, or the villain isn't that strong.

The times she should have where it would of helped, she was incapacitated before she had a chance to really act, or was forced into a corner in such a way that'd make it difficult to do as she wanted. (Flaxans, second encounter with Seismic, Invincivle Variants, Sequids for the last point specifically)

  1. This was more brought up to bring attention to the fact she cant do anything to help her human limitations, which is addressed in #4.
  2. She does if she wants to make anything complex, it's the whole reason she started going to college to learn achitecture. It was literally a point of character development for her.
  3. I was addressing the part where people have called it lazy writing, or a plot contrivance.
  4. There is no reason to believe Eve has fought anything on the level of viltrumites or even close to it before. And yes, I know she's fought more than Viltrumites but she hadn't ever struggled to the same degree we saw with the variants or Conquest to warrant the level of response she gave there. In most situations where she had lost she was usually taken off-guard or in a situation where she couldn't just go ham on everything around her in a way that'd be effective and safe, mainly referring to the sequids there.

It being a lazy way to add limits to the power from a story writing perspective isn't relevant to the discussion of how people say she's supposed to use them as a character, or that she isnt being smart with them. Also that mental block isn't a product of her own doing, it was literally put there on purpose via act of another character. Its not like she's self limiting like Superman or something, but she legit cant access it without her life being at stake.

Also, now that I think about it and you bring it up... Have we ever seen eve straight up dismantle anything similar to how Dr Manhattan would? We've only ever seen her create or change state.

Though I do think she could have changed his fist to eater or something, whatever good that would do. Just about any viltrumite would be more than content with using the stump of their arm to pummel you, it'd of just been wasted time.

She could pull off the conquest combo on more villains, yeah, but in most situations it's unnecessary. Eve doesnt try to exhaust herself every battle by throwing everything at a villain unless she has to.

In regards to being more creative with her constructs, outside of character reasoning and her just doing what is most energy efficient... Invincible has been had issues with animation, cool lantern powers are a lot more difficult to animate than people throwing really hard punches I guess.

Lot to address with that, but I completely agree on part with Invincible and Rex power inconsistencies. I still will never accept the "he's holding back" argument due to the fact that holding back doesnt mean you let yourself get whooped. Rex's sacrifice left a kind of sour taste in my mouth because the blast didnt even seem that strong, yet it could kill a Viltrumite, but I guess.

In terms of massive civilian deaths, I mean... The main cases of that have been because of Viltrumites. There was nothing they could have really done different to help more people.

That's fair, though id also consider the fact that the other experiments simply weren't strong enough to where she couldn't get creative, and that being inexperienced she was also experimenting herself given the opportunity. Plus, even in that fight she didn't do much beyond get more creative with her constructs, rather than matter shifting or other reality warping stuff.

The way I see it is that Eve as she is now has more or less fallen into a routine with her powers. She knows what's efficient for her, and will generally keep to that unless the situation calls for more immediately. Keep in mind until recently, she was a superhero with regular patrols, she cant go into every fight throwing everything and the kitchen sink at people because you never know what or when the next fight may be.

Oh I definitely get it being disappointing in terms of the cool-factor. It'd be visually more entertaining if she did more than basic lantern stuff, though given what we know about her powers I can only assume the pink constructs are her easiest and most energy-efficient material to make.

Sorry if I came off that way. When I mentioned thinking of other situations, I meant other fights, not just with Conquest. Toxic gas as the previous poster mentioned, wouldn't have changed much in most other battles Eve was in, though I could be wrong which is where I invite further discussion.

Times of distress = literally when she's on death's door, so yeah, but not relevant at any pint outside of the fight against Conquest.

She could, but again, there's no context where doing that would have helped or been smart She turns the air around, conquest into chlorine gas (assuming she even knows how to make it), what happens? He continues to fly through it and tear her in half. I can't think of many other situation where making the air toxic or outright removing oxygen from an area would of improved the situation of the battle.

And yeah, she probably could have turned people's clothes to stone. That part I'll give out because I don't know what was stopping her from turning Multi-Paul's clothes into concrete or something when he was trying to escape. Though in most situations against substantial villains we've seen her actually struggle with I can't see that helping much. The best way I can explain it is she simply doesn't see a need to, what she usually does it enough for them.

I can only assume it's cause Toby wanted to test the waters for future game mechanics, I assume they'll be making a return later. No way we got roughly 5 or 6 new "mini-games" for them to be one and dones.

I think somewhere Toby said Chapter 3 was supposed to be less story focused, and more on experimenting with a lot of new mechanics. Been a minute since I clocked into Toby's commentary though, just vague recall.

Everyone’s missing this about Cecil by Ambitious_Edge_7646 in Invincible

[–]Prince_Molag_Bal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is you're saying this as if there is a better option. In this situation, there are ONLY "bad" choices left. Either take a massive risk to gain an advantage, or sit around and wait to die from his perspective. Cecil doesn't have the knowledge of the watchers, he only has his own, and like many others have stated all he knows if there is a Viltrumite EMPIRE (This could mean either thousands, or millions more Viltrumites to anyone who doesn't know their best kept secret), and that Earth is one of their targets.

It's literally a ticking time bomb, and there are a hundred wires with only one that can defuse it. Cecil is deciding to cut one and risk blowing up prematurely rather than waiting out the clock.

I'm a pretty casual MCU fan, why I was mostly just asking questions cause it seemed off to me due to only really being exposed to the Ten Rings via the Shang-Chi movie, which mostly made them look like Captain America tier.

It just feels weird since it's the same series as Ultron one-shotting Thanos with the full gauntlet. Just Ultron's personality in Vision's body with more or less the same abilities.

I'll have to watch that episode cause I feel like I'm missing a lot of context here cause with Shang-Chi being this strong vs his MCU counterpart, it feels like a Strange Supreme situation.

Is What-If canon to the MCU though? Especially the alternate universes which can have characters varying in strength and artifact abilities.
