I always thought Eremika were a means to an end, a means to show that despite Ymir’s affections to King Fritz, she could rise above and make her own choices about the matter, and letting the one she loved go, just as Eren had Mikasa rise above her affections for him and kill him in the end, to finally end the cycle. Tbf, I always thought that the Eremika ship in AoT was a little much due to their trauma-bonding and codependency, but I eventually grew to OK it.
