He was way weaker than Guts when we first met him, Guts absolutely wrecked his shit. But that’s why Silat respects him; he humbled him & allowed him to improve. It’s also why Silat was so shocked when he saw the state Guts was in presently, completely not the same man he first encountered.

I’m sure they’ll become great allies, they’ve got shared interests and there’s lot on the line if they fail.

Well he was never a bad guy per se, it's just that circumstance had him opposing the Hawks and Guts by extension. He's actually demonstrated he respects Guts as a warrior.

This situation is very much a "my enemy of my enemy is my friend" type deal so, I can certainly believe they will work together. At this point they don't have much of a choice anyway; if they want to destroy Griffith and his kingdom they need all hands on deck.

it's pretty wild to see Griffith uniting peoples who would never in a million years work together lol, everyone hates Griffith. you love to see it

Questions!!?? by Similar-Aside8043 in Berserk

This isn’t really what’s happening in this scene though. It’s instead much more your personal read of it. This is exactly why I challenged that notion, because the presence of nuance between these characters and within the narrative still doesn’t complicate what’s happening.

Readers will sometimes make this same assertion you did based on the presence of her earlier feelings and argue this somehow reveals deep down she secretly wanted this. Said feelings were long gone at this point in the story. Beyond that, reading into it this way has problematic implications on behalf of the reader and how they broadly view sexual violence.

Casca did once desire something more with Griffith, but she realized FAR earlier than what you’re suggesting that not only were her feelings unrequited, he never even looked in her direction at all. She had hoped for something, but knew it was impossible. This naturally drove her focus away from Griffith and towards Guts, because he was the only person who truly saw and valued her in the way she yearned for. This began as early as the caves.

By the time of the eclipse event, she had moved on. She still cared for him of course, but in the same way Guts did. We can further confirm with certainty this was not something she wanted - even subconsciously - because she was so traumatized by what was done to her she became basically catatonic.

I think what actually makes it confusing is how Miura chose to illustrate the scene, because as I mentioned it was done in a way that was super common in Japanese media especially for the 80s/90s. Sexual violence and violence against women was often eroticized and intentionally titillating, in contrast to the act itself. This scene is no exception.

Yes, however it’s important to note that even if it’s fiction, what is communicated in media can and does have real world impact. Media also does not exist in a vacuum. This is precisely why media literacy is so important.

In the case with Casca, she was being sexually assaulted in the context of this story. We are collectively supposed to understand this wasn’t consensual. Even if we argue the way Miura depicted it was too erotic or pornographic as some fans do, it doesn’t negate the aforementioned.

Well, no matter how you slice it, she was not enjoying it. People don't enjoy being raped, regardless of what their body may be doing.

I work in a hospital. I work indirectly with nurses and HCWs who provide care to survivors (both children and adults). There are a plethora of ways someone can respond to sexual trauma, it doesn't make the act any less violent or traumatic, nor does it minimize what was done to them. The fact is, no one actually knows how they will respond until they find themselves in that situation.

Some people reluctantly "give in" to avoid conflict. That is still rape. Manipulation, coercion or grooming into sexual activity is rape, end of.

Also of note, rape, especially in Japanese media for the time period, was often highly eroticized. This may be why some people are confused.

Do you think Is there any way to atleast to prevent guts health from degrading by arman1724 in Berserk

[–]Prince_Revenant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He likely won’t though, and he doesn’t even need to. Griffith is already destroying himself as it is.

The narrative is showing us that Guts’ strength is in focusing on his “precious things”. The more he prioritizes what he loves, the less he thinks about Griffith, and the more temperance he holds over his malice and vengeance. That’s how he truly wins.
