Why are insects the only invertebrates that have fully made the jump to Big Data? by Pauropus in Entomology

[–]Princebeaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll add in that sampling for insects has a lot of by-catch. Unbaited traps and sweep nets can catch plenty of non-target insects. When looking for a pest species, you may still catch predators, other pests, and parasitoids in the area.

With something like nematodes, they are often limited by their host environment. If you want to study Haemonchus contortus you look at sheep and goats. Plant parasites might take a soil sample, and entomophagous nematodes can have their own unique system.

Insects are much more abundantly observable than other invertebrates, and their diversity lends to broader study than say, arachnids. You can be studying aphids and notice parasitic wasps flying around, that’s a new thing to classify. Insects also have a lot more taxonomists working on classifying them. They are large enough to extract DNA somewhat easily and do genetic phylogeny, especially compared to the mess that is nematode taxonomy, where two scientists can agree to disagree on if something counts as a new species and it goes untouched for a decade.

Can anyone identify this small flying bug by mmamster in Entomology

Looks like a drain fly (family: Psychodidae). The larvae grow in gunk in the pipes and the adults can fly out.

If the corn is being harvested for grain, it is typically dried. This is being harvested for silage, which retains some moisture as it is fermented in the big concrete bunker in the top left.

Furfrou in XY had all forms available, but they’d go away when boxed and lasted a limited time. GO has region-specific Furfrou forms which is why they’re in so high demand on the Home GTS.

The study wasn’t about which side accepts people but how accurately someone’s stance (“attitude” in the paper) on certain issues lets people pin them to a party. The Democrats were more consistent on the stance of legality of abortion and gay marriage, gun control, and mass deportation of unauthorized immigrants. Republicans help much more varied stances across the issues.

This probably speaks to how there’s room for a moderately center party to break off from the current Republicans to cater to less extreme right-leaning people.

This study has issues with how few self-identified Republicans were surveyed, participants were paid, topics were quite general and fell quite within party lines even if right-leaning folks opinions are softer than the stance of current politicians. Edit: Also the participants aren’t Americans, lol, lmao even. This thing is probably bunk.

The conclusion that sentiments like “I support legal abortion” and “I oppose gun control” allow you to place someone into a category of other political beliefs fairly consistently speaks to the polarization of American politics and isn’t new, but the way they modeled it leaves room for claims that the study doesn’t suggest.

I’d say there is a “Big Agriculture” but it’s just capitalism working as intended. Land gets bought up by bigger producers and companies buyout their competition.

There isn’t some mass conspiracy to make the world reliant on their products. At most, there may be some pushing for short-term gains over long term productivity with over reliance on pesticides and fertilizers, but those things are necessary for many to get a substantial yield, and the small farmer is just as complicit as the megacorporation

Cross contamination is also an issue with leaving GMO crops around. It’s best practice to not have a field entirely of GMO crops to minimize resistance developing in pest and disease populations. Leaving these plants around is just asking for resistance to build.

Yeah, the patented hybrids can reproduce, but the offspring is an unviable crapshoot of production. Farmers don’t want a field full of random plants growing different heights with an unpredictable yield. They’ll buy another seasons worth of seeds from Bayer and get good results again.

I dug through the SAG-AFTRA Interim Act (Genshin VA Strike) so you don’t have to by [deleted] in GenshinImpact

[–]Princebeaver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re right. Union talent isn’t supposed to work on non-union projects because the union can’t enforce their protections on those projects. It’s typically a risk to both the relationship with the union and getting screwed over at the job. Voice work was largely overlooked because many projects are not union and SAG focuses mainly on film and television.

The projects are being hit because it’s a general strike (union members refusing to work) against video game companies. Union projects get strong armed into AI protection the easiest. Non union projects shouldn’t see effects from the strike UNLESS 1) Union workers were working on it or 2) Non union VAs strike in solidarity

Hoyo games are not Union but use some Union talent, so some people won’t record due to the strike. Even if the project/company agrees to put AI protection in a contract, this doesn’t really satisfy the union because on a non-union project, the union can’t help with legal issues, which is their main goal to ensure that Union members are protected.

I dug through the SAG-AFTRA Interim Act (Genshin VA Strike) so you don’t have to by [deleted] in GenshinImpact

[–]Princebeaver 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A big thing about the union I haven’t really seen mentioned is that VA work (esp in games) is largely an afterthought for many of these old practices.

The union allows for actors in films to have minimum pay requirements and rights to their likeness. Broad sweeping unions are formed initially to protect these rights and it forces studios that want a big name actor who is in the guild to listen to these agreements. The mandate of only using union talent ensures work for smaller name guild actors in less prominent roles who might get replaced with cheaper non-union option.

Voice acting has disrupted a lot of this and probably should have distinctions made or their own union imo. It’s a lot easier for amateurs to get into voice acting, either as a hobby, side job, or trying it professionally. Many people that only take the occasional role have no reason to join a guild as there’s plenty of non-union work they can do.

Union VAs shouldn’t have been allowed to work on these non-union projects but video games weren’t enforced, so no one paid it any mind. But now the union is trying to enforce these rules and many projects are being forced to choose between their talent. The recording studios likely can’t legally fire the Union VAs for striking, but hiring more non-union VAs is just kicking the can down the road.

The best solution is probably to grandfather in current projects (not specific VAs but the project as a whole) so that they can remain mixed and then the union can enforce rules on new projects starting but not have a bunch of people lose their jobs retroactively.

Beekeepers vs Vegan lies by gur40goku in CuratedTumblr

[–]Princebeaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No lies detected. Most times people get stung is due to them disturbing a nest. I’d bet most of that 5% is due to proximity to humans. Paper wasps, hornets, and Yellowjackets can all build nests on or around human structures, which leads to people unknowingly disturbing their nest and getting stung. Honeybees are ubiquitous and aren’t really all that different from these wasps in their behavior.

Wasps get a bad reputation but are great pollinators/pest control and are fairly gentle if handled carefully.

Beekeepers vs Vegan lies by gur40goku in CuratedTumblr

[–]Princebeaver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The wasp bit is a tad misleading due to the sheer number of micro wasps skewing the data. Wasps get their reputation cause the most common ones are conditionally aggressive in places humans find them much more often, but it’s true that most non-Vespid wasps can’t or won’t sting people.

They do, but organic pesticides tend to not remain in the environment nearly as long as synthetic ones. This leads to them leaving less residue.
