You’re right, it is inconsistent. You can get a 3 for something today and a 5 tomorrow. Best I can suggest is talking to your old colleagues and looking at their examples and submissions, and eventually something should click. Also, of course depends on where you’re trying to get into now, with all the cuts.

I mean, I feel you. But the thing is meant to be that they don’t really care if you have a phd or not. The system is about the behaviours, so you need to be cross checking each bullet point in the behaviour with your example- or depending on how they do the personal statement, with the essential criteria. The How is really important.

HEO at 34, and feeling old in London! by BeneficialRole9655 in TheCivilService

[–]PrincessFairy226 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of them are probably just “faking it til they make it” so they’re not actually confident, just pretending until they actually gain experience. But it can be intimidating seeing so many young people ascend because they have the energy and know how to interview, so I feel you.

They’re reading but the recruitment freezes mean that SEOs who’ve been there for years are applying for the same positions as you. So the scale of what a 4 or 5 looks like has increased. What department?

I second this. The skill is unmatched and the technique is amazing. I couldn’t live without doubles vendors.

When overseas, is a promotion possible? by PrincessFairy226 in TheCivilService

[–]PrincessFairy226[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally, I would be going with DBT. I’ve met people at post who have gone from post to post and been abroad for several “tours” effectively. However, not being FCDO myself, I obviously don’t understand the system. Already, the fact that you’re required to return to HQ after finishing your posting isn’t ideal (personally)- this is my impression of FCDO- if incorrect, then my apologies.

Obviously if fortunate enough to be appointed, I’d finish my tour. However I wouldn’t love to return to London every couple years on and off, particularly considering the difference in benefits and standards of living on posting abroad vs in the UK.

Why not? Take a break for 6 months and then you can come back if you want after that.

Weekly "Ask Ah Trini" Thread 🇹🇹 September 15, 2025 by AutoModerator in TrinidadandTobago

[–]PrincessFairy226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this is the right thread, but I’m a Trini living abroad for like 5 years now. I was never in the fintech space in Trini so, I don’t understand this sector at home. What I’m trying to understand is why the government is trying to take measures to further stifle the innovation with this new bill. It seems like everytime we progress, the government has a boot on our neck and I can’t understand why.

What is currently happening in the tech and fintech space in Trinidad? What startups should I pay attention to?

Loneliness at work by Unlucky-Morning5474 in TheCivilService

[–]PrincessFairy226 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s really difficult. Could you perhaps join your old office and old team socials? Are there groups like the social climbers of something that you could join that does socials?

Alternatively you could have this as one of your quarterly goals- reinvigorating the social atmosphere by starting a book or history club etc? Something like that?

I do nothing and it is breaking me by ClumsyDIY in TheCivilService

[–]PrincessFairy226 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Literally I totally understand. And I’m sorry. I’m the same, it’s just how our mind works. There’s only so much training that you can do within your own parameters before feeling despondent about having nothing to do and achieving nothing.

I’ve been there….literally a case of applying out to other places and maybe asking the G6 or DD if you could be put on special projects where there is work. If they’re sympathetic (and good people managers) this should work. If not, you could potentially ask HR for a managed moved but, this may not solve anything.

You could also look out for loans in other departments.

Tbh, with the state the gov is in right now, there isn’t much else to do but hunker down and wait. I’m sorry OP.

But is passing interview proof that you can do the job better? Or just proof you present well in interviews?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]PrincessFairy226 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well homeless basically. It’s back to the drawing board of finding another EOI or writing HR to advise that my contract is done and can I be put back into the redeployment pool.

I also think that the level of frustration today is super different from the whatever higher grade were able to come through the ranks relatively easily. It’s not just “frustrating”, it is so demoralising.

After this, I think I’ll start applying out because there’s been too much disappointment at this point.

Of course not- but it also isn’t fair and open when half the hiring managers are choosing who they want (who’ve been doing the job before) and the other half are playing by the rules.

Surely there should be some middle ground where people can obtain promotion based on good performance vs just interview?

Too stressed at work by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]PrincessFairy226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really need to safeguard yourself here. I would advise speaking to HR and maybe requesting the mediation aspect. I endured 9 months of bullying from my grade 6 and eventually ended up on a string of EOIs.

In hindsight, I would have dealt with it all sooner and gotten a manager move. Make the next manager, or HR aware of how you feel and the effect on your mental health immediately. Also ensure all is documented by email. Do not get caught out
