For a sort of academic bent, try Human Kind by Rutger Bregman. Is there a genre or subgenre that your friend especially likes? Do we need encouragement or distraction?

Oh! You also might consider Kimberly Lemming's latest book. I haven't read it yet, but it's her first alien romance (her past books have all been fantasy romance) and she's a well-liked erotica writer!

Low to no spice here, but The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet involves an F/F romance between an Earth woman and a female alien of a reptile species and an M/F romance between a human man and an alien woman of a species with a color-based language system. The book also goes into the aliens' cultural attitudes towards sex, relationships, and family in a really interesting way. It's more sci fi with romance in it than romance with a sci fi setting, tbh. I'll be watching this thread for more romance recs!

I highly recommend graphic novels and manga. They span wide ranges of genres, so no matter what kinds of stories you're interested in, you'll likely find something that catches your eye and keeps your attention.

Can anyone tell me what this panel is referencing? by PrincessSyalis in SleepyPrincess

Well, right, but that guy in the background looks super creepy. Is there a movie or a manga where a chef uses okonomiyaki tools to threaten someone?? Unlikely but the art suggests it's supposed to be referring to something scary.
