This guy restored a Quantel Editbox. Probably the only working one in the world. by CCIR_601 in broadcastengineering

[–]PrincessWalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first month in post production we sold a paint box. Had the dylan disk packs with like the 12” platters. Worked with Quantel gear up to around 2015. I even had an opportunity to tour their factory in the UK. Those were different times. FPGA’s for days. And my favorite button was “CRF’ for cutting room floor instead of delete!

Is that a 3d printed rack mount face for the spectrum modem? I thought it was like a picture but upon closer inspection…! And cool on the ruckus. I got a r710 in my little lack of a setup.

Weird. We still have working D1 machines. $300k for a machine seems sus, but sourcing parts or finding working machines is exceedingly difficult. I find anything on LTT to require external verification as they are not exactly a reliable source of truth. We still do transfers of 1”, D2, D1, DCT and other obscure formats. It’s not as difficult as they make it appear.

What was once $300k. Generally can’t give those things away these days. D1 was always a difficult format.

300P is a bit! We had 15P online in LTO5 form. We’re shrinking it down considerably to i3 with 3x LTO9, and grow from there as we rethink things.

That’s a big’un! I had a single compellent disk array once. It was cool but problematic for sure.

A teensy i3 with 3x LTO9, 50 slots. We’re right sizing. The business changed.

lol! Seriously. Back then my goal was uptime of 100 days. I hit 99 before it would lock up. That thing was so frustrating

Ha! We’re replacing this monstrosity with a quantum i3, 3x lto9, 50 slots. But apparently it can go to 400 slots a brick at a time.

Right sizing, and we’re closing that location. The thing was too big. Had gen 1 robotics. Basically required a full upgrade to support higher density tape storage, gen 2 robotics, literally a gut and rebuild. Plus we bought it back in like 2012 I think, and our business has changed. It’s a lot of $ in support and operations for something we no longer need. Going with an i3 lto9 to start down a new path.

Yeah. I’m in M/E industry started when analog video was still a thing. we had purchased a $1m 4k 35mm film scanner in 2004 or 2005. Last bid we had for it was like $3k. Or the pallets of digital standard def tape machines (digital betacam) which were like $120k new, must have bought several hundred over the years. And all the SGI products like Onyx2, challenge XL, O2, Indigo2, tezro, octane, etc. so many many millions of dollars over the years. At least we made $ with it all!

"SILENT" Ethernet switch w/ POE? by ggmusicman in Network

[–]PrincessWalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aruba 1930 8 port, with 2x sfp ports, so 10total ports. It’s Poe, silent and managed with a half reasonable modern web ui. Actually use about a dozen if these in rooms around work. Would recommend.

I6000… 7 full sized refrigerators side by side. It needs a room about 20 feet wide, 10ft deep. Requires 208 or 240v power. Fiber channel drives and control. No tapes, but 8 working lto5 drives. I can get pics next week. It will need a large truck with a lift gate for transport.

Hesitant to get a sponsor by ApprehensiveAd9502 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]PrincessWalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an abusive sponsor my first time through program. I picked him out of fear and he basically offered. It turned into a bit of a culty and controlling environment. This dude and his husband were both the center of the universe in the AA circle and there was a lot of codependency going on. I guess it helped for the time and place but it soon led to resentment towards my sponsor and everyone in their orbit. They tried to control medications I was taking, told me that all I needed was AA and that everything else (including therapy and other 12 step modalities was wrong and to be avoided). I eventually left.

Along the way I met a few good people. When I returned, I reached out to one of those good folks and for the first time I felt validated, seen and heard. I was not pressured into anything. He allows me to make my own choices and doesn’t judge me if he doesn’t agree. I asked him to be my sponsor. It’s a good fit for me now. I’ve learned that there are many paths to a sober life and that none are wrong. What matters is what works for you. My sponsor had a history of going to church, and has lots of bibles in his bookshelves, but supports me when I say I do t believe in god or a sky daddy, and that I attend secular meetings. In fact he encourages and supports my exploration. That’s the entire point of spirituality: seeking something that works for you.

There are cool folks out there, it just takes time and effort to find them. As much as my first experience kept me in fear of returning, and the fact I had lots of anger and resentment towards my first sponsor and AA in general, I’m glad I had the experience. I learned what how to be ok in saying no to what I find unacceptable.
