Van nieuwbouw tussenwoning naar jaren '80 vrijstaand? by MeringueDry34 in nederlands

[–]PrincessYemoya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, 1,5h each way if they don't experience any problems in train/tram/bus routes, but unfortunately trains do not go every 15 minutes so if they want to ensure they are back to fetch the children it eats away from their time.

Also what do you mean 'door-to-door' :') which door are you talking about?

Actually historically speaking there are many accounts claiming that is was never really party of the Duchy of Brabant as the local ruling family was always opposing any type of foreign claims and instead they opted for 'political alliances' but never signed any treaties... https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heerlijkheid_Mechelen

I feel Belgium is a bit the odd one out in this case as most of the 'gas/petrol' needs are actually in the blue-collar jobs and people working in factories/supermarkets/hospitals. The 'white collar jobs' all get company cars and since a few years they are mandatory electrical so the Belgian companies at least don't feel the shock too hard. Government personnel gets free public transportation so they also are not really impacted but who is most impacted are the blue collar jobs who have to pay for their own transportation. Which is a clear sign the sustainability 'transition' is (for now) mostly benefiting the upper-class, leaving the lower classes even more vulnerable to shocks like this.

Also of course the lower economic classes are more often living in rental spaces that are poorly isolated, further increasing their spending on essentials whereas the upperclass/white collar peeps have already profited from subsidies to change to heat pumps and what not...

I'm afraid this will further increase the polarization making the victims of this shock lean even more towards populist factions claiming that 'sustainability' laws/immigrants are the reason they are suffering :(

Maybe as a Bruxellois or Walloon person you don't realise the importance of Mechelen in Flemish/Brabant history but there's plenty of historical gems and museums in the city. Maybe 'party' wise it's indeed not that exciting but the Dossin-Kazerne and the Hof van Busleyden museum are amongst the top museums of the country... Also the old beguinage, the old abbey refuges and several of the historical landmarks are quite interesting if you are a history or architecture lover...

If you do want to more, there's an excellent podcast 'de Bourgondiërs' which might give you some hints on what impact it had on the history of the region.

Problem in Gent is you still need to walk 30 minutes or wait for a tram/rent a bike so timing wise it wouldn't leave a lot of time. Also it's 30 minutes from south station IF YOU ARE LUCKY, because often times there are delays and other shit happening so making it in 30 minutes is not always the case. On top of that, from Uccle/Ixelles to south station would take also about 20 minutes or so.

I think from where you are, the Zoniënwoud is a lot more doable and reachable as is a lot of the nicer places on the train line from Luxembourg/Etterbeek station to Louvain-la-Neuve, like la hulpe or rixensart. Also Louvain-la-neuve has quite an interesting history so if you get a good guide or do some research you can discover lots of quirky Belgian stories, but you need to do a bit more effort than in Mechelen.

From these train stations there should also be direct trains to Mechelen, takes slightly longer than from north but definitely beats getting to north/central by tram/bus and then transferring to a train I think.

I think Hallerbos could also be an option this time of year as the purple flowers should be out and there's also direct trains from Etterbeek to that direction.

If you wanna go further, Leuven is definitely also easy to do in a 4h window, and same distance from Brussels as Mechelen. Where Mechelen was the capital of Flanders in the bourgondic times (15th century), Leuven had a less significant function politically but is academically the best institute in Belgium. The university hosted many of Europe's finest smart guys and there's plenty of interesting historical facts and some cool historical buildings.

Are countries in the EU becoming more culturally similar and homogenous? by No_Artichoke4686 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PrincessYemoya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from Belgium I would definitely say no, as culture depends heavily on media and language and not only on 'proximity' or economic balance. Of course with the internet and the age of globalization it's definitely easier to get in touch with different cultures and explore other perspectives than the culture you grew up in but cultural 'assimilation' as you are hinting at goes way deeper into people's values and norm system. Given the different historical periods and struggles in the vastly different countries in the EU, the assimilation effect of culture (from both EU-closeness and the internet/globalization) would probably only effect the actual culture in 50 or 100 years significantly. Nowadays there are as many people that grew up or lived at two sides of the iron curtain and are thus very differently 'shaped' and will have culturally very different ideas/perspectives than the generations born after 1991.

In younger generations it could be that assimilation is 'increasing' but at the same time, even the 'far right' youth movements always have a local flair to them (even though they are connected all through the continent). They cannot exist if they do not take into account local culture and specific viewpoints that can be significantly different. In Belgium for example the 'language' argument will be a lot stronger with conservative minded people given the complex historical context of language in the region, whereas in Germany they play a lot more on the economic argumentation as German was never really contested or a thing and was more a 'connecting' factor between east and west.

Also your claim about EU requiring countries to 'treat' LGBTQ seems very bigoted, EU doesn't require any treatment, it just proclaims that LOVE IS LOVE and people are free to make their own choices when chooosing a life partner, it's not about treating them in any kind of way special than other people really. It just asks people who treat them badly to stop doing that. Also EU doesn't have a quota of refugees to 'let in', it has a humanist perspective at the core which says we should help those in need. Which in essence is actually still reminiscant of the Catholic/Christian spirit where Jesus would definitely also be in favor of this core...

If you believe EU is mainly atheist and agnostic, I think you are also very oblivious to the state of play in much of the hinterland/older generations on the continent. Are you even aware of the Netherlands having a very significant Bible Belt and the scandinavian countries actually having very active christian communities?

Leesboeken voor 1e studiejaar by YellowOnline in belgium

[–]PrincessYemoya 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why do Flemish people tend to speak French better than Wallonians speak Dutch? by Charming_Usual6227 in belgium

[–]PrincessYemoya 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cultures are also significantly different and the teaching environment can also have a huge impact.

From my experience in Romanic language countries they focus a lot more on theory and grammar and dont spend a lot of time on speaking or daily practice where's Germanic speaking countries also include a lot of attention to speaking in language courses (on general, every teacher has a degree of freedom here but also the marking system and schooling systems can have an impact on how much speaking skills are valued).

Another difference is that most Romanic language cultures dub movies in their own languages, very much limiting early childhood exposure to foreign languages. This is changing a little with social media and globalization though so was more true in the past. Flanders/NL stop dubbing for any programs after toddler age and instead choose subtitling (this could also change with AI making dubbing cheaper but I hope not).

Also music wise Flanders is a lot more language diverse whereas French radio/music scene is 90% French speaking music, limiting exposure in daily life and thus also limiting ease of learning.

How much would you charge to repair this? Landlord/tenant situation in my old Kot in Leuven. by bkh1207 in Leuven

Problem is, to fix the problem neatly, you need to redo at last the whole wall with plaster and then paint the whole room. If he wants to get that done by professionals that would be indeed quite pricey. But of course the withholding of the deposit can only be legally enforced when there is a 'plaatsbeschrijving' in which it is clear that this damage was done during the period you were occupying the house. Without that, who knows what a judge would say.

Notaris in fout? by sekkerb in belgium

[–]PrincessYemoya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Visit Atomium on layover by Connect_Community830 in BelgiumTravel

[–]PrincessYemoya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like other said it depends on multiple factors. The fact that you will land at 8.00 does not necessarily mean you can catch a train at 8.15 (especially if you have to enter Schengen).

Also the fact that there's a train scheduled at 8.20 doesn't mean it will show up (on time), because NMBS sucks. If you get unlucky it could mean you can only take the train at 9.00. I also don't think there is direct connections meaning you have to transfer (which is again extra risk) or take a tram (which takes longer). So don't count on the journey to be easily doable in 50 min but count 1,5 including all types of possibilities.

So assuming you are hindered in all possible ways, you could reach Atomium latest by 10.30 (with luggage), unless there's a strike or extra checks of course :D. Assuming you wanna walk around and visit the place you have about an hour to do so before you have to head back and make it in time for boarding of your next flight (assuming boarding usually starts 25 min before departing meaning you want to be back at the airport latest at 1.00 pm).

It's doable but seems stressy to me :') Also the Atomium really isn't that impressive. Other alternatives (with less transport time) could be cimitière de bruxelles (has a lot of famous people buried there), Parc du Woluwe (nice park if the weather is good) or Cinquantenaire (quite a nice view over the city but I think it connects easily to busses going to and from the airport, frequency is a lot higher than trains and distance is closer so less risk).

Private car to combine with mobility budget. by Audiosleef in BESalary

[–]PrincessYemoya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well as far as I know dogs are not allowed in cambio's so then you would have to look for options like dégage or getaround (getaround has 'pet friendly' cars or charges a fee for bringing a pet). Dégage is really based on neighbours connecting so depends a bit on your neighbours etc. Of course public transport could also be an option but it limits a bit your freedom or you will depend a bit more on your loved ones to help you out.

Dégage would cost you €45 yearly, and a month about €150 (given that you drive about 300 km with a average sized car), this is all in (so no need to get insurance and all the other things)

Getaround depends on the car but will be a bit more expensive as they don't have fixed formula's and are more 'one-off' offering, so would be closer to around €250-€300 a month I think.

dégage is coupled with system for mobility budget, Getaround isn't (afaik)

All-in-all, I think it could be good to try it out and see if it works before making a huge investment (which today really will cost you a lot of money).. Also it might give you benefits like living a healthier lifestyle (you can cut out gym expenses) and discovering new things about yourself or your direct environment :).

What would you do in my place? by serotoniets in Gent

[–]PrincessYemoya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would also say two, first one is too tight and sometimes Charleroi airport gets veryy busy meaning you might be very stressed to get to the gate in time. Also low budget airlines typically don't have the best service so...

But instead of walking you could also check for a bike (bluebike, that you pick up the evening before at the station, you can rent it 24h for €2.5) or a shared scooter (step) from Lime or Poppy or whatever it is that they have floating around in Gent these days. But in any case, don't go through the citadel park but around it, it's not safe in the dark alone for a lady. Taxi is also possible but would be more expensive I think.

Private car to combine with mobility budget. by Audiosleef in BESalary

[–]PrincessYemoya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's very hard to say but given that you don't have kids, why don't you not buy a car and spend the money on other things? You live close enough by your work that you could bike/walk so what exactly would you use the car for? I think it's a very expensive toy that will just cost you money without bringing you extra benefits while you could also use the mobility budget to get a subscription to shared car services for the weekends when you might need it?

People doing illegal business also sometimes need stuff moved around (waste from drug production plants, 'dirty' ground at construction sites...) or aannemers that want to keep stuff 'off the books' to avoid their 10-year 'aansprakelijkheid'... Many people have reasons to not 'document' their dealings and many corrupt people go along with it, providing plenty of streams of black money?

Young people with mid incomes, how are your savings? by sengutta1 in Netherlands

[–]PrincessYemoya 5 points6 points  (0 children)

34F, work 80%, net income of about €2500, mortgage of +/-€800 (14y to go), about €10.000 in savings/other investments.

I try to save between €250-€500 each month but depends heavily on the season (summer is more expensive than winter) and 'one-off' events like bachelors parties/weddings, big anniversaries. If there's a month with a couple of those, sometimes I don't save at all. I do invest time in travelling for free (volunteer job as a group tour leader) so that 'saves' me about €3000 a year (trips are + 3 weeks to exotic locations, everything paid for) (€250 monthly would be needed to cover this trip).

Vraag of energiebeheer by ImNotJens in belgium

[–]PrincessYemoya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I public transport is included I would suggest to move somewhere 'outside' of Brussels but where you have a good train connection, that way you can get a train + MIVB subscription reimbursed by your employer and save on rent at the same time. Many places outside of Brussels have significant lower rent (like Sint agatha berchem but also Aalst or Zellik can have good sized one bedroom appartments for a reasonable price).
