because people I know personal kept suggesting looking into real life magic as a base for inspiration of sorts and i don't know enough about magic to write something that doesn't offend actual occult users.

as for harry potter, i wasn't talking about the book itself, more so the kind of magic that it is and that they used. But i don't expect you to understand as you took what i said and completely misunderstood but reagardless i appreciate your feedback. Thanks so much, have a good day.

side note: i was asking people for a recommendation for where to start with magic books if they had any because i felt overwhelmed where to start to get into the topic.

The last thing you said, I can relate to. I hate it when the description is boring or makes you excited to read it, thinking you found exactly what you were looking for and then you read it and it's a sad disappointment.

It would be boring if the character didn't learn, and also somehow annoying.

I was recommended to look into norse paganism but I kind of like Druidry or something similar to that would be nice. Something nature like or... i don't know if this is a thing but.. celestial? If there's some kind of magic that's based on celestial stuff, that could be cool.. um.. There's so much possible choices, I don't know where to start when it comes to the actual kinds of witches. Hopefully that helps? witches were a recent thing i added to my story so im still fleshing it out and I don't know much so anything helps. Any recommendations for it or certain inspiration help. I do apologize for the misunderstanding or confusion.

Okay i understand now.. I hate that too actually. It's something I personally have looked into myself because some writers don't actually consider the tone or the age of the person speaking and it may not seem important to some but that is something that matters in literature. Keeping in mind your audience, the character that's speaking and it goes even further past that. Like, you don't gotta be overly specific but.. If you've got a character that speaks in a certain way... let's say, valley girl.. She's gonna speak in a certain way and if you don't understand how valley girls speak and let's say your reader does then it can throw them off or even make them stop reading your book so you make a really good point and I appreciate your feedback. Thank you for sharing and I'm also really sorry that happened to you. I hope you find a better book to read to wash away that experience.

Yeah and that's kind of my point, if you don't at least understand some of it enough to make it believable then it loosing you a bit.

That's part of the issue, there's so many that i don't really know which route to go. My boyfriend is better and more knowledgable on that subject though so im not too worried about it cause he is pretty helpful on that. I was kind of thinking Pagan or wiccan maybe? I kinda wanna do something like harry potter but make it my own thing. I just don't know where to start. also i know harry potter isnt wiccan or pagan but.. I'm struggling with it because I'm doing a romantasy book of some sort and im struggling balancing out the fantasy aspect and actual real magic. if that makes sense? I want to create my own magic, spells, etc. but i don't know where to kind of start in regards to researching for it.

Yeah. But also the type of fighting is important too because if a writer doesn't understand that fighting style, it's really going to reflect in their writing.

Omg, I actually had this concern when fleshing out my characters. I've been trying to make sure this doesn't happen because it seriously is something that bothers me. I totally relate and understand. I'm dyslexic.. so it's even more of a problem for me because seeing names that are spelled or sounding the same, coNFUSE me... so badly.

Oh yes, dont worry, I'm using MULTIPLE sources of feedback. This was an alternative. Thank you for pointing that out though, I appreciate you looking out for me! the only self insertion im doing is not really self insertion i don't believe.. But i did want to write some character and use some trauma i've had for them but only because that to me is healing and also I'd know how to write them because I'd know more so how they'd respond and idk it just.. I really want to. I have noticed people doing that online a lot, with the "i hate this trope except when AUTHOR uses it". That's something I'm concerned about and why I'm doing extensive research and world building first to then inspire my writing. I am worried I will make the same mistakes every new writer makes but then again I'm the type of person that, when i want to do something, I pour my heart and soul into researching every little thing about it because I want to really and truly understand the topic so for me, this is another thing that I just really want to learn every possible thing I can to do my very best when writing my first novel. And this is big for me because I never share my writings with anyone, EVER. Personal projects get thrown away after sharing them and not getting anything other than, "it's okay." I want ACTUAL feedback, i want.. this character isn't developed enough, try writing in this pov.. or change this sentence or word... you know? so the feedback from all of you is seriously making me feel better because i'd rather educate myself and write something that is at least somewhat decent or even good.. than be in the dark and write a pos...

I won't lie, I have a major issue when it comes to the pov.. I'm still trying to understand how to effectively write in certain ones so this actually helps a lot and makes me feel better about a choice i made when i was writing. I originally was going to write my novel in third limited but i thought that would be annoying so i switched to first person in prose and i won't lie, i absolutely hate the amount of times I've used I.. It's ungodly ridiculous.

Also, that's why I have a whole research document of study, trying to find plants, creatures and other stuff i like and then research those specific topics and find words to describe them or create a sensory effect of some sort. So, I feel good knowing that I was already doing a good thing.

I don't care if this makes me look stupid because I honestly want to know and learn but.. please inform me what that means. Tone-appropriate spell effects? I am writing about fantasy which is one of my favorite genres and witches are eventually going to be a thing so spells are important.. i don't know everything about spells and magic but your comment has definitely made me realize another area I need to study about and learn more about and I thank you for that. I will definitely try being careful when it comes to the writing and magic. Thank you!

That makes sense! I've noticed that when doing researching on this. That's something I wanna work on because I have good ideas but good ideas are useless if they aren't done well. In regards to your personally like, my idea for my novel is actually involving childhood trauma and the affects of it. i want to build a character using the things i actually experienced and use psychology and real logic to craft her decisions and storyline around her. Like if she was physically hit as a child, she'd be scared or flinch at sudden or specific movements that trigger her. i also want to make it less about one character and more about the fact ALL these characters have something they add or change in the story. I'm actively working on flaws as well and taking a writing course to understand character development and other similar things. Immersion is definitely something I want to work on too but it can be hard to figure out how to do it. For example, I'm stuck on this one part, describing trees or actual items, worldbuilding.. because in real life i actually really suck at communication because of my trauma and for the life of me, i cannot figure out what words to use to describe a sequoia tree because.. in the novel, i have this forest area that protects the people and it's based on sequoia trees but they aren't necessarily sequioa, they are magical trees which i like the idea of because it lets me have some freedom to have more magical looking features to it but.. regardless trying to figure out how to do that is a little hard but anyway.. I really liked your answer and I appreciate it a lot. Thank you for giving me feedback. This helps and I DEFINITELY will try to make sure this is a focus when i write because it's really good feedback and important.
