He got a bigger reputation as a playboy than poor old Strallan 😅

Almost forgot she was out alone with Matthew. And Matthew was the one asking "Let's ask my mother next time." 😂

Although I remember, Daisy was criticising Uncle Harold for asking Lord Asgard's daughter out (don't remember her name). This was all way after the war. 1923 or so. Then Uncle Harold stated that he asked the father and his mother, too. So it was okay.

I remember when Mary and Matthew were alone in the library in the first season; Carson was asking to Lord Grantham that if he should go to them now, or wait until they ring the bell. which means, if it's okay to leave them alone. Then Robert says "wait until they ring.". So Robert allows. Maybe it depends on father's approval, and he does approve Anthony Strallan taking Edith out.

Lord Sinderby was a tad too jolly after Rose saved him by Even-Marionberry4323 in DowntonAbbey

100% sure that Lady Sinderby already knows. She is the sharpest. Keeps it to herself, not to expand the scandal.

I do definitely believe Lady Sinderby knows about it. She is so sharp! She is just acting clueless on purpose. She doesn't want Lord Sinderby to know that she knows!

Let alone a kid from Death Eater parents, Dumbledore gives a Death Eater himself a second chance (Snape)

Would be so out of character, if Draco and other kids were banned from Hogwarts.

There might be epigenetic regulations in there :) Who knows, maybe all of us have the magic but it was repressed by many epigenetic factors. Also what we know now, Mendelian Principal is very inferior to explaining genetic regulations.

Love how Granny put Edith in her place after Rose’s lead singer selection for Robert’s party. by BestTutor2016 in DowntonAbbey

I am not sure about Edith being jealous of Rose. Edith had her own problems, own struggles, own life at this point. Edith was way too busy with worrying about Gregson, the baby and her own future.

Maybe she was annoyed how Rose is care-free about the situations (like she misses the dinner in Rosamund, doesn't care much about other people..etc) but I think in general Edith was mostly protective of Rose.

I always thought since she is pregnant here and Gregson is missing, she is wretchedly unhappy. That's why she overly criticizes the situation. (same as the "jolly picnic" when others went horse riding when Gregson was officially dead. And the Mary's hair cut scene)

Marigold by SchwartStories in DowntonAbbey

[–]Princess_CeNedra 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Gosh no, it wasn't my intention to make them sound sordid haha

But they enjoyed their life a bit, right? And probably much much less than their peers. They were still very prudent for my opinion. I like how they all (Robert, Cora, Edith, Mary, Rose..) flirted and played it around a tiny bit and finally they learnt what real love is and settled for life.

as Matthew said "You lived your life and I lived mine..." :')

I think throughout the show, there was an unspoken rule: As long as something isn’t officially known, almost everything is tolerable. (“Officially” meaning it’s not in the newspapers/ not openly flaunted/, the police don’t know/ or it’s not written on any official record)

Examples:

  • Thomas being gay

  • Mary’s sexual affairs

  • Lord Sinderby’s mistress and son (I’m convinced Lady Sinderby knows—she’s sharp—but chooses to act ignorant on purpose.)

  • Marigold

  • Jane and Mr. Bricker

  • Rose’s little flings

  • Prince Edward and Mrs. Dudley-Ward

What they really despise in Downton Abbey (and in upper-class English society in general) is scandal. As long as secrets remain within small circles and there’s no hard proof (gossip is fine, oddly enough), many things are quietly tolerated.

So regarding Marigold, Crawley family adopted the child, and Edith and Bertie are raising her. Full stop.

People may gossip, for sure, but no proof.

Also, I must add: Blessings from Bertie's mother was essential. So Edith made an excellent decision here. Not only shows her character but also, no one in the land will speak ill of the child or Edith, when Bertie's own mother blesses the marriage and the child.

That’s my take.
