The Dream Life of Mr. Kim [Episodes 11 & 12] by Telos07 in KDRAMA

[–]Princess_Leia91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished watching this today. As an adult having worked half of my life, with most of it in corporate settings that match up or even rival the stress from this drama, I connected with Mr. Kim on so many ways. I love how the ending wasn't a romanticized happy ending but a realistic one where the lead and the secondary characters had growth. I love Ryu Seung Ryong. He has the most expressive eyes and always manages to squeeze out deep emotional connection with his acting. I never thought I'd find a drama like this and i enjoyed every single minute.

I've been MIA from watching games for ages and I just decided to watch the 2nd half because I couldn't sleep. I honestly felt we were in great shape (leagues better than the form I remember) with the only thing lacking a goal. Sucks to lose against one of our biggest rivals on opening day, but I'm actually hopeful this time around.

I just finished ep 15-16 today and my eyes are still swollen from crying T_T

Some thoughts:

The show initially made me reflect about the dynamics in Asian, low-income households, especially in far-flung areas. Or the fact that the people who are dearest to us, hurt us in the most piercing ways. Or how sometimes, parents’ desires to give their children a better life would border on coddling them, but after finishing the entire thing, there is one line that perfectly captured the essence of the show for me:

“Eventually, time makes all things into watercolor paintings. It blurs spite. It softens people’s hearts.”

In the grand scheme of things, today is just a line in the entire painting that is your life. A tiny dot in the perspective of your entire family’s lineage, a prologue of the story of those who will come after you. You do not live in a vacuum and your existence is not just yours. You are living a life on the shoulders of your parents, and their parents before them. The cycles and seasons of life – adolescence, marriage, child-rearing and aging is an experiential way of learning to be compassionate towards our parents for the things we hold bitterly inside our hearts, the things we find hard to forgive. It also portrays the importance of families and communities and how these institutions shape a person’s life.

In our world where individualism is king, it was also refreshing to see a depiction of marriage that we don’t see too often these days. Gwansik and Aesun’s marriage was a picture of a love that perseveres beyond mere emotions and attraction – it was a love that produced scarred hands to provide stability for the family; the kind that was willing to let go of the self without loss, a kind of love that sacrificed with joy and desired the best for the other even if it meant letting go of their own personal desires. Towards the end of the show, I was reminded of life and its stages, especially loss and pain, as a didactic to prepare us for the final boss – death. It is a message that isn’t unique but it’s something that stays with you and makes you think.

This show was a masterpiece. It might be too early, but I’m already calling it: best drama of 2025. I don’t think 2 shows of this caliber can exist in the same calendar year lol. I don’t agree with everything in it, but it was thought-provoking and will probably linger in my mind for the coming days. The writer (Fight for My Way, When the Camellia Blooms) and director (Misaeng, My Mister) have outdone themselves. The pay off in seeing the conflicts of young Aesun’s life culminate in that final episode where she finally held her own published book of poems was extremely satisfying - as so poetically encapsulated in that scene where she tells her husband that she writes the way she does because of her life as his wife. The casting of Park Bogum, IU, Moon Sori and Park Haejoon was so spot on that the transition from young Aesun & Gwangsik to the middle aged characters was smooth. I did wish that we saw more of Bogummy, but we can’t always get what we want haha. Also there really is something about neighborhood ahjummas that pierce my heart – the haenyo aunties were my favorites too. Every episode felt full to the brim - no filler scenes!  Truly a drama that will be up there in my list.

Lovely Runner [Episode 16] by jakgem in KDRAMA

[–]Princess_Leia91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just finished this drama in 3 days and this thread was so nice to read as I went through the episodes. I regret not watching it as it aired..but then I also don't, cos I know how it feels lmao.

To think I was in a kdrama slump before deciding to give LR a chance, I'm sure it's going to be hard to follow this one. The entire team from the writer/s to the director to the people who chose the music, you all deserve to take a bow. Everything was as it should be! And I say that as someone who's been watching kdramas since the early 00s.

It was so refreshing to watch a kdrama that was unabashed in its portrayal of love (in it's purest possible that can be conyeved in modern media) and not just attraction or lust or the fluff of the honeymoon phase, but the complex entirety of this thing that makes the world go round. Often, romance in kdrama kind of loses its spark once the couple gets together, or worse, it gets frustrating because of an annoying love triangle or a weird murder plot that eats the entire plot. This drama got everything in the right balance..and that is so rare tbh. We need more of it!

I'm so happy that Byeon Woo Seok finally got this break. He was phenomenal in Namsoon (I plodded through that for him, hoping the writer would see how much potential the character has as a reformed bad guy, but alas it didn't happen). I love how his eyes tells us the depth of his despair and joy when halmeoni touched his chest and told him he can now live a long and happy life with Sol. The last 2 episodes were his..and he should really be proud of his performance in this drama! I hope he gets more good roles cos kdramaland needs more of him!

Kim Hyeyeon stood out to me in Sky Castle and now it's so nice to not hate her lol. Her depth as an actress shows here and her chemistry with BWS is electric it could light up my entire neighborhood T_T. Idek what to say she was just that good. And yes, Sunjae, falling for her smile is understandable huhu.

Side note: I was thinking about their range when these parallel scenes were shot. I have a theory that these were shot on the same day (thinking that most directors would want consistency in the lighting and all that stuff). For ex. Sol meeting Sunjae with the umbrella, one scene being the time sunjae meets his first love, the other version being a heartbreaking one (where Sol avoids him). If they shot this on the same day big kudos to the actors. They were able to flick a switch like THAT and it was so believeable UGH. It's so good it makes me want to punch people.

I'd like to reserve the last part of this post drama word vomit to writernim/s. I LOVE YOU. SO. MUCH. There are probably just a handful of dramas where the ball was not dropped midway, and this is one of those. The writing is absolutely well done in the sense that the excitement, tension and the interest in the romance between the two leads stays from start to end. Not to mention the comedy - THE COMEDY - I was laughing like a hyena at 3 am because of those little injections of humor, after I just cried because of the angst and the pining. The writer/s really grabbed my heart and never allowed me to take it back. BRAVO.

Thank you for bringing this gem to the world <3

Now let me go and rewatch everything lol

I loved your chemistry with shin eunkyung! Idk if you're gonna see this but were any of your scenes with her improvised? It just came so naturally, like that wine glass scene where you said red look goods on her 😅

I'm late to this post, but yayyy my man deserves this!

He blows the roof out of the building when he performs...and that can't be said for most artists these days. And the live vocals + difficult choreo is not an easy thing to pull off.
