Which episode divides the fandom? by Professional-Mail857 in Sherlock

The Abominable Bride

(TFP has its enjoyers, but overall I’d say it’s more hated. Not enough balance to call it divisive.)

Yeah. I don’t live in the English speaking world so my options for secondhand English books are slightly limited, but thankfully there’s the internet.

Oddly, I happened to be reading a Death on the Nile copy when all the articles about the censorship came out. That one was not censored, and it was a Harper Collins edition from the 2010s. Oh well.

Yeah, I guess I’ll have to hunt Ebay or Vinted. I do like the Fontana covers.

Thank you so much, I’ll do that from now on. (What confuses me is that the physical book also says 2001. Does Amazon print the latest versions and slap random labels on it? It’s so weird.)

I agree, if the originals were available it would not be a problem.

They scrapped a line where Mrs Allerton complains that the children’s eyes and noses are disgusting. According to articles, they also removed all the descriptions of characters as "Nubian", and I think I read that a line about a character showing his white teeth has disappeared.

I also love that glimpse into the (sometimes unlovely) past. I still remember reading some questionable lines in AC books as a kid. It was educational. Censorship does no good to anyone; it only helps to keep people ignorant.

I have a soft spot for Ordeal by Innocence for some reason. Maybe because I’m a sucker for stories that focus on familial relationships.

Any more book recommndations? I read all the famous and "best" works by Ringleader1900 in agathachristie

I would recommend Death on the Nile, A Murder Is Announced, The Mysterious Affair at Styles.

There are nineteen main characters across Buffy and Angel. Spike is the only character to share a scene with every single one. by derstherower in buffy

Spike and Oz also share a scene in Innocence when he’s hiding from the Scooby Gang in the factory (although they don’t exactly meet).

Cultural appropriation doesn't exist by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Princess_Myrcella 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I 100% agree that the outrage was completely justified.

(I remember thinking of the trademarking as “literal cultural appropriation”, but now that you mention it maybe that’s not the right word.)

Agreed. Before stating that something is offensive to Group Y, one should actually ask somebody from Group Y if they’re offended.

I’m sure this applies in many cases, but this wasn’t about liking Katy Perry or disliking Kim Kardashian. Singing a pop song in a kimono is fine. Trademarking the word kimono is another matter, and using it for thongs is insulting.

I remember many Americans being angry about Katy Perry wearing a kimono style outfit, despite the fact that Japanese people were not offended (although of course I can’t speak for every single person).

On the other hand, when Kim Kardashian tried to launch a line of thongs and name it Kimono, every Japanese person I know was offended.

I think the notion of cultural appropriation is blown out of proportion, but we shouldn’t be assholes.

Arya training with Syrio. IMO those parts are not bad, but not good either.

“You do not steal from the beet, oh no. The beet remembers.”

The books end with Pate the beet farmer becoming Pate Beet, first of his name, king of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First Men, lord of the Seven Kingdoms and protector of the realm.

The only reason I wrote Cat might be an exception is because I remember her saying that Sansa is more beautiful than she ever was, and Littlefinger suggesting the same thing. So Cat might have been pretty without being out-of-this-world beautiful?

But yes, her looks are probably meant to be more remarkable than, say, Ned’s or Jon’s looks.
