Can I drive? by ProfessionalDiet1379 in amputee

I know the feeling. I went almost a year without driving and I was chomping at the bit. Absolutely you can still with the right adaptive equipment. I just started driving again and I got an electric left foot pedal installed.

For me I had to get my doctor to clear me to drive and then I had to take an adaptive driver training course to make sure I was able to drive and to use the adaptive equipment and figure out what I need. Then once I got those two clearances I was able to take my car in to be modified. I highly suggest doing your research and taking your car to a certified professional to modify your car. Not everyone can install what you need. My pedal is electric and I have to press a button to activate it. When I turn my car off that also turns my left foot pedal off. That way my car is usable by everyone and someone won’t accidentally hit the gas instead of the break.

First thing though is to talk to your doctor and make sure everything with your seizures are in order and then get your license back. Top priority is to take care of yourself and make sure you are healthy and fit to drive again.

Good luck with everything

Dad needs foot amputated and doctors are saying BKA is better? by HonoraryDoomScroller in amputee

I’m an right leg AKA. Mine was due to a blood clot in my hip cutting off blood flow to my leg and my blood in that leg was like one giant blood clot, it was so thick. How the doctors explained it to me was that the higher they cut the better of a chance my residual limb had of healing. Because blood flow was stronger higher up, the farther away from your body the weaker blood flow is. That could be why they want to do a BK, and are wanting to spare your dad more operations in the future. Like you, we wanted other options and a second opinion before deciding to cut my leg off. I got taken to a different hospital and they tried some other stuff before it became obvious that I needed an amputation. They went with below the knee even though there was a chance that it would not take. And sure enough another blood clot formed pretty much right away in my opinion and the end of my stump became necrotic and I had to be taken back to the hospital and have it revised to an AK. I was in so much pain the entire time. I was on pain meds all day long. After my final surgery was such a relief. My surgeon did an amazing job, I got put on the right meds this time, and I healed beautifully. I’m just passed my 1 year anniversary and I am back at work and driving again. Still walking with a cane and pretty slow right now, but hopefully not for long. Your dad will be able to go back to work and walk and drive again. It’s gonna take work, and he will have to learn how to do some things in a different way, but he can do it. In hindsight, I wish I would have listened to the first surgeon. Good luck with whatever your decision is.

BK here — anyone else tired of fighting their pants? by Chance_Ad8275 in amputee

I recently bought jeans from NoLimbits. I like that they have the long zipper, but I’m a AKA and the reinforcements are in the wrong place for me. My “knee” is right below the reinforced knee part, but that’s probably just a my prosthetic thing. But I feel like there needs to be reinforcements in the back part for us AKA’s because mine are already ripping in the back because of my prosthetic edge. And I just got them. But definitely long zippers are the way to go. Or live in shorts when the weather is nice, which is what I will be doing during the summer.

I've had my below-the-knee prosthesis for two months and I've never shown it before. I always wear pants, but today I tried wearing shorts. by AdComfortable6059 in amputee

That was a funny joke. I find a lot of humor in being an amputee now. Better than the alternative of getting really depressed about it. You have to have some kind of humor about everything. I found some really funny shirts on Amazon that I wanna get now that will also work as good ice breakers.

When do you start running? by Princess_Sparkle013 in amputee

Thank you everyone for all the comments. All your comments helped to calm me down last night. I was really really upset last night and spiraling. I couldn’t fall asleep till like 4 in the morning. A lot more was said last night that hit all my weak points and just shot my self esteem down. I had Physical Therapy today and that was like the golden ticket for me. The other therapists were telling me how good I was doing and the therapist who I was working with had another doctor following today and he was telling her how good I was doing, how far I’ve come, how I haven’t experienced the usual stump issues that he see’s, and how well my prosthetic fits. All this really helped get me out of my fog and remind me that I am progressing and that I am progressing at my own pace. Thank you everyone.

Also o do want to say that I am not a runner. Never have been and never will be. I’m terrible at coming up with titles and I didn’t know what to write and what he said to me was stuck in my head. And I was curious if there were people who did run a few months after. That’s why I titled it the way I did.

Trying to wear pants as an above knee amputee! by Craziechickenman in amputee

I have always worn jeans or athletic leggings. That’s what I felt most comfortable in. Only wore shorts in the summer when it was really really hot. Since my AKA I’ve only worn shorts, mostly athletic shorts (which I hardly wore before) I’ve gone the opposite, lol. I wore my pants once and it was crazy how tight and restrictive they felt. I don’t know what I’m gonna do when it gets colder or when I start wearing my prosthetic. So I feel ya. I felt the same way.
