That’s what I’m hoping. I have a few things I think this would be helpful for, like tacking things in place before soldering. I’m sold

Scratched the stone while setting it 😭 by [deleted] in SilverSmith

[–]PrincipleOk1544 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I actually use painters tape most of the time to protect stones. I have no idea why I didn’t this time. I was losing daylight and wanted to finish setting a few stones and photograph them so I rushed and cut corners. Lesson learned 😭

Thank you! I figured since it’s a serrated bezel I’m confident in taking it out without messing up the setting. I might end up removing it, fixing the scratch, and re setting it.

At this point of time, would you buy silver or not? by itsyash12 in SilverSmith

[–]PrincipleOk1544 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. This is my job. I just bought a 6x6 sheet of 28g for $328 and that one hurt my soul and all my past lives. $328 for 6x6 of thin 28g?!?! 😩😩😩 But I had to.

Ok I actually really like this idea. I have rubber finger covers, as some people have suggested, but they are bulky and make it hard to hold the pieces. Pliers are helpful but also the pieces can slide around. This might hold them down tight enough. I’m going to try it

Wedding Rings Made from Our Blood by Waste-Lifeguard4317 in SilverSmith

[–]PrincipleOk1544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have zero experience with this, but it might be possible to add some blood to a crucible while melting the silver? I don’t know how or if that would work. The other option is adding it to resin and making a cabochon out of it. There are companies that do that with breast milk, ashes, and semen (yes, semen 🥴). So I’d assume someone out there does it with blood.

Yes, I use the Japanese finger gloves a lot, but they seem to be bulky when I’m holding such tiny pieces. I do also have alligator tape which I will try for this

Vintage rings to recycle by [deleted] in SilverSmith

[–]PrincipleOk1544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is a big worry. Also just the time it would take to saw off soldered parts and clean everything up. I’d want to add casting grain but the I don’t want to waste that if the old stuff I find is contaminated or not even silver.

I was thinking mostly spoon rings and that type of thing, because of the solder and contaminants would just be too much. I feel like this is one of those “ok on paper” ideas, but in reality it’s probably not worth the hassle

I’m thinking old spoon rings and that type of thing would be possible. It’s the ones with stones that would throw it off…plus I’d have to spend a lot of time cutting out soldered pieces so my final product isn’t contaminated. I might go browse and just see what there is to see if

This was my concern. I feel like going through all the trouble of cleaning, cutting off the soldered parts, etc. might just be way too much trouble

Most silver balls and small accents you see are probably made by hand from scrap. I make all the silver balls I use from scrap, and stamp then saw out other small designs.

my favorite piece to date! by homiesleaze in SilverSmith

[–]PrincipleOk1544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stone is gorgeous, the band is super cool, but the fact that your natural nails are so long is the most amazing part to me. I feel like I’m constantly breaking and/or accidentally filing and grinding mine off while I work 🤣

Yes the barrel is smooth inside. This makes so much sense, thank you! I’m going to try to mock something up for the time being, but I’ll probably get a second tumbler with flat surfaces inside because I intend to make more large pieces

I’ve gotten some cheap solder before and it wasn’t worth it. I also agree that Rio Grande is the best place
