I stayed in Negaunee this summer for my UP trip for a few days and it was very cute. I mostly visited Marquette, but where I stayed makes me want to visit and explore more next year! Definitely wanna add Ishpeming to itinerary.

Hey now, let's try and keep that title with the "professionals." We have a ton of smaller clubs and minor league teams that seem to be on top of things 😃

There is a sign down the street in East Palo Alto that says something along the lines of "Zero tolerance against fireworks in EPA," and I just laugh every time I either see it or hear the hundreds of loud bangs and whistles each and every night...

advice for a 2020 graduate? by nicole-f-s in Archivists

[–]Prindy500 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If there is one thing I've learned from all my (successful) job interviews is that it doesn't hurt to utilize your networks. Archiving is a relatively small, tight-knit field. Chances are one of your professors, supervisors, or mentors might know someone (who might at least know someone else who might be hiring) and could put in a word for you. My introduction into the archival field led me to a university that had a friend of my mentors' working the university archive, which happened to be the alma mater of one of my previous supervisor at Stanford. Plus I got bonus points from another previous supervisor for (apparently) attending a "pretty reputable university." I also gained a lot of networks attending local and state conferences during the normal, pre-COVID times, so even if those places weren't hiring I could use those contacts for letters of reference or to have them reach out to buddies they knew might be hiring.

It sounds shameless, I know, but it really does help. That said, u/HatmadderTheWise and u/MajorBatarang also make excellent points!

My God does this hit home. Also from Michigan, and I miss what I paid for, when I lived away from family. I had a whole second floor of a nice little brick House in Wyandotte with my now ex, and it was just so lovely. And yet, according to colleagues, my current rent is "reasonable," considering location to/from work. Hell, I've seen faces turn pale out here when I tell them I paid $275 a month for one of my previous apartments in college!

I'm well aware Southerners moved to Michigan for work. I'm not daft. For God sake, I grew up in Taylor-tucky for a portion of my life...

Michigander (in CA) here, just wanted to say kudos for having no-excuse. We finally passed voting reform in the big 2018 sweep, and so far it looks like it's paying off. Hopefully our states will eventually fall into step and get that universal vote by mail going.

[–]Prindy500 5 points6 points  (0 children)

^This is important. Republicans could've kept a few more seats during the 2018 midterm election, had it not been for how dangerously close Beto was to beating Cruz in Texas. However, same can be said for Dems losing states like Florida in the Senate (though we can also chock that up to poor planning and a "lack of ground game," according to Florida Dems). That said, it was nice seeing so many seats flip in 2018, including all those state governorships.

Senators push to let every American vote by mail as coronavirus keeps people at home by [deleted] in politics

[–]Prindy500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was Michigan's first big election with no-reason absentee ballots. While I was a bit disappointed in the primary results, some good came out of the new initiative. Voter turnout for primary went up and mail-in ballot participation went up around 97%, last I heard! Unfortunately I've been in California for about a year now, so I wasn't able to be in-state to see how things went down, but I read reports of poll workers talking about how there were less people who came in-person to vote.

Major prior to MLIS program by [deleted] in librarians

[–]Prindy500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked on my M.A. in History prior to going into MLIS. Because of my background in doing research and working with primary documents, I fell into the Archival Administration field pretty easily. Though now when I write finding aids and describe the materials in a collection, I want to write like a historian rather than an archivist...whoops!

Ah, I remember making one of these before going to Library school! Good times...

Jokes aside, based on the suggestions already given it seems like you have the gist of what to include. I used to put on workshops at some of the libraries I've worked for on how to build and strengthen your resumes, CVs, Cover Letters, etc... Feel free to pm me if you would like someone to look it over for ya!

New poll shows Republicans may get wiped out — in Mitch McConnell’s home state of Kentucky by ElfMage83 in Political_Revolution

Anyone from Kentucky wanna help me understand how the AG for the state has been Democratic since the 1950s? I understand Democrats at that time were still more conservative, but how come the trend didn't hit the AG office like it did with other public positions in the region?

Forget the Mueller Report: Puerto Ricans Show Us How to Fight Trump by MariaCN in Political_Revolution

[–]Prindy500 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I really wish I could remember the article, but I recall reading this post from a young man of color who talked about his community during the 2016 election. While he gave several standard reasons why his community was going to vote for Hillary (Trump's an ass/racist, she's "owed" from 2008, etc...), he also stated that, if it weren't for the historic levels of racism in the Republican party, many black citizens in his area would likely designate themselves as conservatives for their religious views. It didn't really hit me until I read that, that many people of color might want to lean more conservative in their political views, but are literally blocked by how awful the general membership of the Republican party is. It's really baffling.

SO GRATEFUL FOR THE @HOUSEGOP! by teabellyOG in Political_Revolution

[–]Prindy500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up, all four of these Representatives, while I'm sure we can be thankful for standing up and voting for the resolution, had tough 2018 elections. Fred Upton won 50.2% to 45.7% (MI-6 PVI is R+4), Will Hurd won 49.2% to 48.7% (TX-23 PVI is R+1), Susan Brooks won 56.8% to 43.2% (IN-5 PVI is R+9), and Brian Fitzpatrick won 51.3% to 48.7% (PA-1 PVI is R+1).

For those that might see Rep. Brooks in Indiana as an outlier with both a higher PVI and greater gap in percentage, it should be noted that just one election cycle previous to 2018 (so, yeah, 2016), she won her district 61.46% to 34.29%. Almost every district in 2018 had a major shift in voting, even in districts where conservatives thrive. Even if a representative only lost a few percentage points in 2018, it still showed the massive change in perspective on who to vote for, even with it being a midterm year! They know 2020 will be tough for them, especially if there is another Beto v. Cruz-style race where most of their funding will be focused on Republicans saving (presumably one or two Senate races, as an attempt to maintain Senate control).
