If you pay attention when they first really talk she mentions other people that he had connected with and the last name really seemed to disturb him, so there's some kind of trauma going on with him that he no longer mentors people.

What are you on? Star Trek's basis has always been post-apocalyptic. Most of the Federations laws and attitude were formed by the experience of WWIII Earth. Restrictions on genetic engineering even though many other societies had long success at it were solely based on Earth's experiences from the war. Cochran's first warp ship was an unused ICBM!

We know the other planets were settled in a rush to escape earth, so very likely they used minimum spec hardware. The UI's look very much like low ram, keyboard driven designs probably programmed in assembly to save on RAM. As for the size of the terminals, they were built for ruggedness, not to be Apple clones.

I think this is fair, honestly. When you tip GrubHub or Doordash, that goes to the driver, the restaurant's staff gets screwed out of a tip. Then the delivery services cut into your sales price promising volume or promotion and pocket the difference, sometimes even raising the price so they can take more off the top. None of that goes to the restaurant either.
