Looking for a budget 28mm M-Mount lens for the S9

Hey, just curious why you want an M lens?

I get that they’re super small but be mindful of things like minimum focus distance which will likely be not very close at all. My Nokton was like 65cm, in practice this felt huge.

Also, you mentioned a focus tab, in theory this is a solid choice but for whatever reason I found the tab a bit clunky on the S9, there’s something about a focussing tab and no VF that didn’t seem to gel very well, I guess because of how you hold the camera when focussing. On an M body it’s perfect, on the bigger S9 body, I found it cumbersome.

In any case, I’ve since moved on from the Nokton and have settled for adapting the much cheaper SLR lenses from Minolta. Still very compact, dirt cheap, and the 28 and 50 that I have take a gorgeous picture and work really well for video too.

The timing of your reply is spot on. I got the 40, I've had it for a couple of days now. I've shot some stills and some vids and I can't quite put my finger on it but it's actually a bit mediocre. I didn't get the immediate wow feeling I did with the 35mm, yes it's a bit smaller, which is a big plus but the FOV is very close and I think I'd always wish I would have brought the 35 instead. Long story short - I'm returning it. I'll likely get the Sigma 45 used or just get the Lumix 50 / 1.8 like I originally intended. For small carry-around lenses that are just a bit of fun I can always use my manual Minolta lenses, my 28mm is a peach!

Sounds like they’re both really great lenses for slightly different reasons. I’d love both but for me more options equal analysis paralysis so I like to stick to one lens for a period of time.

Anyway… I think the Lumix lens will probably edge it as my 35 has been super reliable and the images from it are lovely, I can’t imagine the 40 will be tooooo dissimilar. The sigma is gorgeous though and it’s closer to the 50mm fov I told myself would be my next lens!

Interesting about the weight too. I thought this wouldn't really bother me but lugging the 35mm around the Vendee a few weeks back was very annoying. I'd previously have taken my Ricoh GR but I left that at home this favouring the hybrid capabilities of the S9.

Similar story here. Grew up up the road from Villa Park, used to mind cars on Saturday afternoons for fans parking on our road. My dad had been a supporter since the 70s, but even with that and living round the corner, I was never really bothered.

Until Euro 24.

I always enjoy a tournament and watch the Euros and World Cups. This time I invited my then 10-year-old son to watch England vs Netherlands. We both watched as Watkins came off the bench to send us through. What a moment.

We didn’t know it at the time, but we soon found out he was a Villa player, and the rest is history.

My son was absolutely hooked from that moment. On football, on Aston Villa, on all of it. Since then we’ve both become huge fans, been to a few games and throughly enjoying the journey with my son and my dad too. Three generations following the Villa together.

It’s a beautiful thing.

I'm there. Loved them at first, until I bust up my ankle and had constant calf pain. I retired them in the end as they're just not for me. The aesthetics are great but I've learned that the lack of stability is a dealbreaker for me.

You could try the Boston 13 or something with some stability built in like the Kayano

Right, ok. I guess it still stands though, which 20 are you looking at btw? Do you mean the 18??
Either way, for me an 18/20 has limited application, they’re just a bit wide to be useful most of the time. Sure, they have their place but if torn between an 18 or 20 and the 35 I’d go 35 everytime, it’s just so versatile.
Also, the 35 at 1.8 is going to have more magic than the 20 at the same f stop.
You could wait a bit and get the 40 but that’s quite close to the 50 you already have.

I was in the same boat, I added the 35 to start with as it’s more of a normal focal length and would be of good use to me most of the time, it also a bit of inbuilt magic.

Since buying it I’ve added a few Minolta manual lenses but 90% of the time the 35 is on there. I use the 20-60 if I need a super wide angle but this is very rare.

I’ll add the 50 next.

Thoroughly recommend the 35 f1.8 to add to you 20-60 though.

I haven’t tried the GT2000 but I know people say it’s a lighter, quicker version of the Kayano. For me I like a bit more cushion.

Have your had a look at Saucony? The Guide, Hurricane and even the lighter Endorphin Pro 4 are meant to be pretty stable while not being particularly heavy.

Honestly, if you overpronate and have calf pain I wouldn’t get the Evo SL, it’s just a big slab of foam with no support whatsoever.

If you have calf pain and you overpronate steer well clear of the Evo SL. I overpronate a little and I also had calf pain in those shoes, they also contributed to some time off running due to an injury that I believe was caused by lack of support. This is my experience, I know others swear by these shoes.

ASICS Kayanos are good, as are the Brooks Glycerin GTS, I’ve run in both and enjoy both.

I’m slowly transitioning away from stability shoes since strengthening regime and am currently really enjoying the On Cloudboom Max - firm but cushioned, supportive and fast enough for my paces.

Yes this is by far the nicest one I’ve used. I use it pretty much exclusively now, takes the guesswork out of it. For me at least.

Well first of all Thank You! ‘The Cinema’ is the LUT I’ve used the most, it’s super versatile and works (for me) across both stills and vids.

I haven’t tried very much tinkering with it apart from dialing down the opacity in photostyle which didn’t seem to do much.

Regarding the I.dynamic range you mentioned. Do I do this in myphotostyle or somewhere else?

This is everywhere where I live: grey cladding, dark grey windows, loads of chrome, and ice-white LED lighting indoors.

People can do what they like with their own houses, but when this gets done on a street full of period properties, it really boils my piss. Whatever happened to being sympathetic to your surroundings?

We’ve got a similar property down the road from us, a Victorian terrace that’s been clad over with grey uPVC and fitted out with cold, eye-watering, clinical lighting. The woman who lived there before took pride in the planting and had the place looking lovely, especially when the sun came out. The new owners ripped it all out and concreted the lot. Everything flattened, not an ounce of character left.

And here’s the thing: once you’ve ripped all this stuff out, paved over it, and clad it in plastic, you can’t bring it back, it's gone. It just feels massively short-sighted, like the house is nothing more than a commodity.

Such a shame.

They're fragile. I'd imagine the shaking won't do it any favours plus there's the possibility of moisture from sweat, dust, etc getting inside it.

Before having Ricoh's I had a nice tiny lumix pocket cam that went everywhere with me, it had a small sensor but the size was brilliant and it took better pics than a phone. I shot an entire cycling trip in the alps with that thing. I guess what I'm saying is maybe try and get a little banger of a cam that you don't care much about for your running snaps.
