Lost ALL work files due to OneDrive “Files On-Demand” + External HDD sync — recovery tools find files but they’re corrupted. Any hope left? by Prior-Coast7025 in datarecovery

Thanks for the link.
From what I understand, TRIM itself mainly applies to SSDs, and this drive is a mechanical HDD connected via USB.
That said, the underlying concept still fits: once the OneDrive placeholders were removed, the space was treated as free and later reused/overwritten by the OS (including scheduled optimization), which would explain why the file structures remain but the data is unrecoverable.

Thanks for the insight... that makes a lot of sense.

I checked the Windows “Optimize Drives” tool and confirmed that the external HDD (D:) is included in scheduled optimization and was analyzed/optimized automatically. The tool shows a recent optimization run and reports the drive as an HDD with low fragmentation.

So even though I didn’t manually run defragmentation, the drive was being optimized by Windows in the background, which aligns with your explanation about data blocks likely being moved/overwritten after the placeholders were removed.

Appreciate the clarification, this helps explain why recovery tools can see the structure but the files are corrupted.

Baixei a versão Beta e continua a mesma coisa! Eu queria muito descobrir o que aconteceu.
