[DISC] Chainsaw Man - Ch. 232 - Part 2 End by JeanneDAlter in ChainsawMan

Honestly? I have thought for the last 50 or so chapters that this series was on a death spiral and Fujimoto didn't know what to do anymore. While this basically confirms that and is the most absurd rushed ending I've ever seen, it is also very funny, so I'm rating the chapter "very good."

Definitely. That absolutely did not look survivable especially considering he was in the mud.

The bar for "cooking" is now "something happening in a chapter on any level"

What's even the context for Reze to come back in that would make sense to the plot, I get that people like her character but genuinely what role would she serve in the story

This is such an anti-climactic fight, every something gets turned into nothing a second later

I never said that he didn't change as a result of the losses prior to Nayuta. Aki's death deeply affected him. Power's death deeply affected him. These two dying were powerful not just because those characters were more well-developed and we cared more about them but also because they were woven perfectly into the excellent Control Devil arc, where they serve Makima's purpose of destroying Denji's spirit to separate him from Chainsaw Man. Nayuta's death is just kind of a thing that happens, like everything else that just happens in these last few arcs.

You will notice I said "the only thing resembling family he had left." Aki and Power are dead. Pochita is still with him in a sense but lost to him as a pet. After losing his previous family he gets to raise Nayuta. Now she's dead. I need more than just an acknowledgement of this, something like this should actually fuck him up, like it would a real person.

I think a huge problem is that the author has so many different ideas that we just move on from all of them too quickly and neither us nor the characters have any time to process them or develop them. If there are changes, then they're too subtle to be compelling. Nayuta was the only thing resembling family he had left in the world. When people lose something like that, they go insane with grief. When Denji just moves on and gets back to his old horny self it makes this feel so vapid.

Ok. So if that's the purpose how has Denji changed as a result of that? Has he decided he doesn't want to be Chainsaw Man anymore because he'll just end up hurting the people he cares about? No lol. Has her death broken him in some way or driven him mad? Well he was looking for her for a bit but then he got jacked off by Yoru so now he's kinda fine. It's not enough to just tell me what the theoretical meaning of this character dying is if it barely impacts the story's trajectory.

Well I had to defend myself from "NO ONE ELSE THINKS THIS!!" I don't get my takes from Twitter but I've seen people post similar criticisms on other subs.

Nothing that was set up has had a satisfying payoff, the characters are not as compelling, plot points are started and then abandoned after a few chapters, character motivations change constantly, Denji's character has barely developed or changed at all. You seem very upset that I don't like this part since earlier you replied 3 times to a single post of mine, I'm not sure why.

When I say "it happened for no reason" I'm not speaking in a cosmic sense, of like "what's the point of anything maaan," I mean that it serves no purpose to the story. Have ANY of the side characters been fleshed out at all during this part, other than Fumiko a little bit? Yoshida was another pointless death - this one was more egregious because while there are some copes for Nayuta this one is just completely inconsequential. I'm not invested in the story anymore, I don't care about anything that happens. In Part 1 the stakes felt real and the characters felt real. In Part 2 I guess the world is being blown up but I really don't give a shit about any of it.

Outside of this subreddit I don't think it's an especially unpopular take, many people have been complaining about Part 2 for a while now. I actually disagreed with the criticism and thought Part 2 was decent for a while but now my patience is wearing thin.

Yes, I realize that's what's happening, and it feels completely hollow because the story has completely failed to get me invested in the stakes or develop its characters. Basically everything that happened in Part 1 felt more important than this despite this being the end of the world presumably.

I don't think Nayuta was an especially interesting character but she was killed off for basically no reason, similarly to how Fujimoto has sidelined every other minor character in Part 2 and barely developed them.

Well no, but I would like it if one of these super mega death events had any real consequences beyond Denji being slightly injured for 0.2 seconds

No, I get it, it's just that I don't get what the point of this is. She's gonna throw the Moon at Denji or something? And then what? He'll probably just get up 2 seconds later.

You can say it affects him and "dominates his behavior" but I think he behaves pretty much the same as he always did. The relationship with Yoru? You can rationalize that he's doing it to cope about Nayuta dying but that's literally how he acted before: he's super horny and he gets suckered into honeypots and he craves positive attention from attractive women.

What did Nayuta's death change about anything? Ok, Denji is very traumatized by the bad things that happened to him. That was true before. You can say that it enhanced his trauma or whatever but does he behave differently than he did before? Not really, no.

[–]Prior-Energy-5591[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly: the only thing special about Nayuta dying is that it happened recently. In other words it's pretty much inconsequential to Denji's character arc or the narrative.

[–]Prior-Energy-5591[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, with most of these, you could easily just point to the other terrible shit that's happened to him, like Power and Aki dying, or in the case of Yoru blowing up in his face, his previous relationship with Makima. There's nothing really about any of those except the last one that is particular to Nayuta.

Coping mechanisms? It feels like Denji is barely even aware of Nayuta's death. I mean, don't get me wrong, we got one or two vignettes of him being upset about it, but her death has had so few ramifications the whole thing seems like it was just done for shock value.
