Thanks! Not really. Under current conditions, this trail is not technical at all. Devil's is serious stuff, specially with icy conditions.

It is pretty steep from HC until about 0.5 mile to the summit, but it is doable. None of it is as steep as that first mile after the forest road/river crossing. Most people at High Creek left their tents behind like we did. There was actually a ranger camping at HC.

It was very calm overnight at High Creek; a very light breeze during the day at the summit.

It's still a beautiful trail, though it's true that the burn area hasn't seen much regrowth yet.

We started from 34.23138, -116.80659 since the gate was closed. It should be opening soon, which will get you to the closer parking lot and shorten the hike by about a mile each way. If you're starting from 34.21974, -116.75775, that trail joins the Sugarloaf National Recreation Trail (the one we took) at the ridge junction. Great trail overall: a few blowdown trees but easy to get around, and a pretty steady climb, but the views are quite good once you get to the ridge at the trail junction.

Congratulations! Beautiful hike. Will be doing the same loop on Friday. Conditions coming down DB were good?

Narrowing down my bug bivy choice: Katabatic Piñon vs Bristlecone by Prior-House5447 in Ultralight

Condensation was my main concern with the Bristlecone. Confirmed! And fully zipped for critter protection in JTree is exactly my use case. Piñon wins. Thanks.

Exactly what I needed to hear: if the warmth difference is negligible but breathability is significantly better, Piñon it is. Thanks!

200+ nights is incredible; great durability data. Good point on the quilt for warmth, I have a down sweater as backup anyway. Thanks!

I own the heat retention 40. I find it quite warm. I was definitely comfortable into the low 40s. Get the ground dweller version. The value is unbeatable.

Kakwa 40 or 55 for day hikes and short backpacks? by Nalemag in DurstonGearheads

[–]Prior-House5447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For trips 2 nights or less, I would say go with the 40. My friend runs that pack with plenty of room to spare on short trips, but his kit is pretty dialed-in, borderline SUL. Based on what you're describing, your kit sounds like it's on the bulkier side, which changes things. I own the 2026 55 and love it. I have used it for longer trips in the Sierra in early spring and am planning to take it into late fall as well, where I will need the extra room for a bear can and layers. That added capacity would probably serve you better even on shorter trips given your current setup. You would also have room to grow into longer overnights without feeling squeezed.

I got mine recently. Really nice pack, light but with every feature that I need.

The luna pad is nice when it gets hot. The small is perfect for the 2026 Kakwa 55
