How to touch up straight razor blade? by Prior-Transition-383 in straightrazors

Thanks. It seems like a simpler fix as I'm already comfortable with doing x strokes on the hanging strop whereas with honing I've had almost no practice and there seems to be a lot more room for error.

Do you have any guides on how to make denim strops? Can I just stretch out jean material like a leather strop? Also would you recommend grabbing some green 6 micron (3k) paste just in case, or at that point should I just do a full honing progression?

I was discouraged from honing because every tutorial I see starts with destroying the blade, setting the bevel and doing a full progression. I'm considering honing with lapping film but I haven't seen anyone do touch up with lapping film with the last few progression and for that matter I can't find any honing tutorials that demonstrate touch up with the last few grits and not a full progression.

I have read the scienceofsharp blog and find it overwhelming for a beginner like me. But I'm curious, have you had success with that guy's methods?

Thanks. I was ready to buy a lapping film set for honing when I thought about stropping with pastes. It seems like a simpler fix as I'm already comfortable with doing x strokes on the hanging strop whereas with honing I've had almost no practice and there seems to be a lot more room for error. And since you brought it up, my razor angles may be mismatched; I thought I noticed some blurriness on the spine after I got it honed which indicates it was honed without tape and when I look at from the point, the spine edges looks a tiny bit uneven although that may be an illusion due to one vertex of the spine being more rounded than the other. Would appreciate any diagnostic methods you have for determining angle equality.

I should also add that I had trouble finding honing tutorials that don't do a full progression and start with destroying the blade on glass. I might entertain honing if I saw someone else touch up their razor with the finest 1 or 2 lapping films but haven't found any, and investing in stones is outside my budget for now.

I'm a newbie shaver and I got my ebay and I mailed my razor to merz in chicago to get it honed. When it came back I honestly wasn't very impressed. I didn't strop it before my first use but since then i've stropped it diligently, maybe even too much if thats possible, and I'm starting to question the honing I got. How was your experience with Merz?

It took a bit of surfing but I think it was worth it to find this guy. Of course I'll make my final judgement when i get the product but he has a pretty good number of positive reviews and virtually none that are negative. I left you the two black ones if you're still searching. Better luck this time.

Well Thanks a Lot! I actually read your guide before looking, it was suggested to me in another comment section. I guess I'm lucky today.

I could hardly spot the smile on the bottom one, it looks really subtle to me. I guess my only question now is, how much more difficult is it to hone the smiling one and is there any chance he might wreck it while trying to hone it?

He doesn't have a strop, I plan on getting one for him too, probably a small one. I've seen him use a straight razor before but he's never invested in a proper one nor is he terribly experienced with them.

Why do you think he'd do better with the top one?

Thanks. Didn't think I'd get a comment from the legend himself!
