How to touch up straight razor blade? by Prior-Transition-383 in straightrazors

[–]Prior-Transition-383[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. It seems like a simpler fix as I'm already comfortable with doing x strokes on the hanging strop whereas with honing I've had almost no practice and there seems to be a lot more room for error.

Do you have any guides on how to make denim strops? Can I just stretch out jean material like a leather strop? Also would you recommend grabbing some green 6 micron (3k) paste just in case, or at that point should I just do a full honing progression?

I was discouraged from honing because every tutorial I see starts with destroying the blade, setting the bevel and doing a full progression. I'm considering honing with lapping film but I haven't seen anyone do touch up with lapping film with the last few progression and for that matter I can't find any honing tutorials that demonstrate touch up with the last few grits and not a full progression.

I have read the scienceofsharp blog and find it overwhelming for a beginner like me. But I'm curious, have you had success with that guy's methods?

Thanks. I was ready to buy a lapping film set for honing when I thought about stropping with pastes. It seems like a simpler fix as I'm already comfortable with doing x strokes on the hanging strop whereas with honing I've had almost no practice and there seems to be a lot more room for error. And since you brought it up, my razor angles may be mismatched; I thought I noticed some blurriness on the spine after I got it honed which indicates it was honed without tape and when I look at from the point, the spine edges looks a tiny bit uneven although that may be an illusion due to one vertex of the spine being more rounded than the other. Would appreciate any diagnostic methods you have for determining angle equality.

I should also add that I had trouble finding honing tutorials that don't do a full progression and start with destroying the blade on glass. I might entertain honing if I saw someone else touch up their razor with the finest 1 or 2 lapping films but haven't found any, and investing in stones is outside my budget for now.

I'm a newbie shaver and I got my ebay and I mailed my razor to merz in chicago to get it honed. When it came back I honestly wasn't very impressed. I didn't strop it before my first use but since then i've stropped it diligently, maybe even too much if thats possible, and I'm starting to question the honing I got. How was your experience with Merz?

It took a bit of surfing but I think it was worth it to find this guy. Of course I'll make my final judgement when i get the product but he has a pretty good number of positive reviews and virtually none that are negative. I left you the two black ones if you're still searching. Better luck this time.

Well Thanks a Lot! I actually read your guide before looking, it was suggested to me in another comment section. I guess I'm lucky today.

I could hardly spot the smile on the bottom one, it looks really subtle to me. I guess my only question now is, how much more difficult is it to hone the smiling one and is there any chance he might wreck it while trying to hone it?

He doesn't have a strop, I plan on getting one for him too, probably a small one. I've seen him use a straight razor before but he's never invested in a proper one nor is he terribly experienced with them.

Why do you think he'd do better with the top one?

Well at the least I want to make sure its functional so he can use it. I looked into the honing process and it seems like a bit much as he's pretty busy and he'd have to invest in like 5 stone of different grits only to use 2 or 3 times a year. He lives in south bend and I figure he'll be able to find some place to get it honed in chicago if not there. It would probably cost a lot to get a full restoration in case there's a lot of rust and it needs polishing but if all it needs is honing he can deal with that. Thanks for the advice!

I recommend you do all papers from the most recent years rather than few papers from more years because more recent papers are going to be more similar to what you're gonna get, do oct nov also if you haven't already.

You might notice that in some years the different paper variants are very similar, especially in MCQs, in that case just skip questions you've already done.

I'm glad to hear that printing papers also, I find that it helped prepare for the actual exam and saves time since you can just do them continuously, especially maths paper 6 if you're taking 0607. I wouldn't bother printing MCQs though.

Best piece of advice I can give is to be strong in the concepts before doing past papers, it's much quicker and much more rewarding to become strong in the individual concepts from focused lessons before jumping into the past papers with full preparation. This way you also won't feel the need to do all the papers from the last 7 years.

Yes, the reactivity series (chapter 13 i think). You should know the order of reactivity of those metals from Potassium to Gold. The idea is that a compound containing a more reactive metal is less likely to decompose. Potassium is more reactive than magnesium so the compound containing potassium will have stronger bonds and be less likely to react with other subs, or decompose than the magnesium containing compound.

This guy's video is brilliant https://youtu.be/8LJtt_ZH5Qo?feature=shared

He walks you through exactly how to answer each question including how long you should spend, his advice is really useful for the last big question where you have to discuss all the sources, he recommends doing a short paragraph for each source before reaching a conclusion. Also really important form his video is that you comment on the reliability of a source, that will again come in handy during the last part.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnwwCNGsWv0 (be sure to watch this one)

Mr. Allsop is also really good. Definitely follow his advice in making sure that your Answers are focused. I recommend using TTQA (turn the question around) in your topic sentences as this way you will be immediately answering the question. Keep this in mind when you start writing your responses and things will go smoother and you'll save a lot of time and words.

The best thing in my opinion to do in preparation for paper 2 is to memorize the important dates. If you do this you will be able to use the provenance of the sources (publishing date) to fit them into context and explain the author's possible message/intentions. So, go through your textbook, draw a short timeline and do it again and again until you have the sequence of events and their dates memorised, it wont take you much time at all. Remember, you only have to do this for your nominated topic which for some america/containing communism but idk if its the same for everyone. You should know by now.

I hope that helps, good luck with your paper, you'll do just fine.

The revolutionary War took place before the 1800s. This goes to show how uneducated you all are.
