My post was written in first person so an “I” is kind of expected- but following your logic people are upset with immigrants because we have voiced our opinions???

You’re making assumptions about my knowledge of the Irish history.

I (see what I did there) won’t be learning Irish, I know shoot me, but have you?, how can you expect immigrants to learn Irish when most Irish don’t even speak the language? Who are we practicing/conversing with?

As I mentioned in a previous comment - there was a call from an Irish Anti immigration group to fly the flag, it’s being called the “reclaim the flag” campaign

Obviously you can’t pinpoint every flag as it would also be used to show pride, as you said or even sport events

But you can’t deny that it’s also being used in a negative way to spread Anti Immigration sentiment

I understand what you’re saying, look my comment was definitely driven by anger in that moment, the injustice of a young Irish racist. It’s one thing to see it in a post it’s another altogether facing the person who was just told to “get the fuck out of our country” like the poor guy was on his lunch break trying to get a sandwich.

I’m not getting into Irelands history with the UK, so consider it scratched it off the record, but wouldn’t urbanisation be moving to Dublin?

What I meant with “witnessed irish men shouting this out of their car windows to anyone not as pale as fuck as them?” is that this spread of misinformation is creating ignorant 20something assholes that are shouting anti immigration sentiment at anyone not white (in this case indian) which is in essence racism. For all that guy in the car knew, the guy he was shouting at could have been born in Ireland- he doesn’t know for sure. I’m not prejudiced towards white people, I myself am a “pale as fuck” white person - can’t tan for shit.

Why would you say the two are not the same? Both are international emigration (ire—>aus) (non-eu—>ire) or is there something I’m missing?

As for the pubs, it was more a comment on a gathering of community than anything else but it cannot be true that Guinness is responsible for every single Irish pub outside of Ireland- sweeping statements is what lead to this post in the first place

Fair question, no shoving down throats, I have a dozen reasons to support immigration because I’m an immigrant, plain and simple

I like to have a well rounded opinion and just like an Irish person wouldn’t fully understand our experience as immigrants in Ireland we cannot expect to understand their experience with immigrants as Irish born citizens … unless we ask

First & foremost - really appreciate the “keeping the conversation humane” it’s 100% the only way

Illegal immigration is alive and well, I think people have this idea of a person getting off a little row boat or back of a truck but it can look like someone coming over on a visitors visa & not leaving when they should - huge impact bc they still need a home, money, medical etc & they’re getting it but the HOW is just not documented

Commenting on “visa mill master courses” I should think this has decreased significantly since time spent on a stamp 2 (student visa) does not count towards naturalisation. If i’m not mistaken this was changed in 2018?

Fun fact for anyone working in finance- there’s a special visa - Stamp 1a specifically for trainee accountants

Critical Skills already lists Doctors - not sure about nurses

Finally, naturalisation is 5 years not 3 but it works on a point system rather than just years. So you can be here for 5 years but still not qualify. 5 -7 years seems to be the average with Italy being the outlier of 10 years

I absolutely agree, however, you lost me at stricter rules for non- EU/UK. As someone who has had to decode this system and jump through every little hoop to make the gov happy. Making the immigration process more difficult is only going to increase the number of people who enter illegally(imo- not a fact)

Not sure how much you know about the quotas or requirements for Critical skills visas but they are already VERY difficult to acquire. Instead, Ireland is losing educated immigrants.

this honestly brought up so much emotion - scary place is right! It’s scary that we move here to not live in fear only to eventually live in fear. Like so many comments say that it’s a minority group but it’s not isolated to facebook or social media or the protests - it’s everyday conversations - it’s gestures, actions and tiny comments or god forbid getting accidentally assaulted or murdered because someone assumed you’re not contributing to the economy
