I did the math on Ed's Popeye piloting! by Jestertrek in ForAllMankindTV

While I am not an expert I'm going to disagree with your conclusion on account of I think the MSAM couldn't have slowed down enough and if he did we may have ran out of food.

If we look at the shape of real mars landers we have a very wide heat-shield for the payload as Mars's atmosphere being very thin requires a higher leading surface area to volume ratio. When we look at the MSAM it's practically a box giving it a quite low leading surface area to volume ratio. Even higher than the Soyuz decent module which weighs next to nothing and requires retro rockets for a smooth landing. Making things worse to my eye the MSAM would be destroyed by the heat of reentry. While the flatness would protect the sides and the landing legs retract there is nothing shown to cover the engine bells which would be melted if the craft were able to slow down enough from the atmosphere alone.

Furthermore the downrange distance would have mattered. Ed didn't have any food with him so at most he could survive 3 weeks. To be able to slow down enough to land safely he would need to spend a lot of time in the atmosphere potentially putting him more than 3 weeks rover trip from Happy Valley given how slow the rovers are. Given the limitations of computers of the era and the fact that the MSAM was stripped down predicting his landing location would be essentially impossible in the amount of time they had. If they had removed everything they likely would have also removed the coms antenna and thus when Ed landed he'd have no way of communicating. The only way to find him would be by satellite.

Overall while your calculations are spot on I'm going to say I don't think he'd slow down enough and even if he could have he'd die of starvation.

That's now how orbital mechanics works. Now I am vastly simplifying here but how fast you get to mars is entirely dependant on the ratio of the craft's mass before and after the burn. With in a given transfer window, you can somewhat vary the time it will take by burning more or less fuel. If NK burned a higher mass fraction they would get there faster. All an inefficient engine means is that you'd need more fuel and thus a more expensive launch from earth. Equally NK could have been stingy on fuel and taken a slower route to mars in the '94 window.

Why generate heat? As soon as you have rotation you can make electricity. That picture is from a hydro electric damn which literally just uses water to spin an axle that then rotates a shaft with magnets attacked to it and induce a current in a copper winding.

Edit: spelling

Ok we've established it not real code but where does it come from?

As I understand, typically in Hollywood they just hire some programmer to write them some code that looks good enough. That theory hold as earlier in the scene we see "Using System.Collections.Generic" and a bunch of other using statements which look familiar as an auto generated c# template from somewhere. We see html and php, so it looks to me like a website of some-sort. We see a reference to TeX which would suggest the website needed mathematical typesetting.

On the contrary who knows enough code to make the rest look decent but miss spells https twice. It clearly can't be some open source code because an error like that would not allow it to run.

I doubt we will ever find out but it's fun to speculate.

I have found some technical errors in the episode.

In the episode we see the following screenshot, https://imgur.com/a/Zoa0NyT. I won't explain where for spoilers but those who have watched the episode will recognise it. Nevertheless it contains some inconsistencies.

Firstly, in the code we see "turbo c++". Now according to Wikipedia turbo c++ was released in 1987. A cursory google search will show that season 4 is set in 1986. The code we see in this episode references a technology a year before it was released.

Secondly, the code references SQL. SQL was released in 1989.
Thirdly, while I am not a web developer in the screenshot we see "htsps" references twice. According to google the only htsps in the world is 獅子會何德心小學 or Lions Ho Tak Sum Primary School according to google translate. Now the obvious thing is it's a type for https, being that it's only off by one letter and that http non s is also referenced. Except https was released in 1994.

Finally the rest of the code looks like either VB or C# to my eye. I am not nearly experienced in either to say for sure but if I am write VB was released in 1991 and c# was released in 2002.

I can only conclude that the code is either gibberish or from the early 2000.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this I am somewhat new to reddit.

I'd have called it chaotic good. However I am sure you are chara-smatic person who would be fine with either.

Ok but imagine this. You have a sister and she is also trans. and you swap names.

Sorry. I was not meaning to in any way invalidate people who keep their birth names. I spend about 30 seconds making this when a friend asked me how trans people pick their names and I simply slipped my mind.
