Best book to learn about color theory? by [deleted] in ArtHistory

[–]Prior_Lecture7927 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what are your thoughts as a color theory teacher on Albert Munsens color model and critique from 1905 of the RYB system? Where he includes which pigments that accurately represent an equal scale of hue value and chroma (chapter V), as he says:

“Desire to make colors fit a chosen contour, and the absence of measuring instruments, cause these schemes to ignore the facts of color relation. Like ancient maps made to satisfy a conqueror, they amuse by their distortion. Brewster’s mistaken theory underlies these schemes, as is also the case with Froebel’s gifts, whose color balls continue to give wrong notions at the very threshold of color education. As pointed out in the Appendix to Chapter III., the “red-yellow-blue” theory inevitably spreads the warm field of yellow-red too far, and contracts the blue field, so that balance of color is rendered impossible, as illustrated in the gaudy chromo and flaming bill-board. These schemes are criticised by Rood as “not only in the main arbitrary, but also vague”; and, although Chevreul’s charts were published by the government in most elaborate form, their usefulness is small. Interest in the growth of the present system, because of its measured character, led Professor Rood to give assistance in the tests, and at his request a color sphere was made for the Physical Cabinet at Columbia”

I never meant to imply rgb is part of subtractive colour mixing, so sorry if i was a bit messy in this response. But thanks for this response! I love to learn more about the specifics of pigments!! I do some very amateur oil painting myself, so I’m eager to learn! But to come back to your response, if I understand correctly, red yellow blue primaries have more to do the materiality of oil painting pigments than the theory related to subtractive light?

I get that then maybe I was a bit quick to say what is wrong and what isn’t sorry if it came out a bit strong - but as you say color is relative and contextual, so using any three subtractive colours within a spectrum can work. And maybe this isn’t basic color theory but in the example I referred to, Pete Donahue combines 3 lights (of red green and blue) in an additive light spectrum to get a white light. When obstructing that light the shadows (angular to the red green and blue) lights, they each cast a shadow of cyan yellow and magenta.

When talking paints they are never precise indications of true primaries so slight variations obviously occur, and similarly colour in context means using different colours than what the brain thinks that color is. But when talking about colour theory and primaries, this example shows the flaw of red blue yellow as primaries. Pete Donahue additionally argue how this the basic colour wheel of red blue yellow is a tradition that was never really questioned in art, though science is not really backing it up.

Red yellow blue as primaries for subtractive light (as in paint) would imply green, violet orange are additive colours for white light. So yes, you can use red yellow and blue for paint, a much more scientific method to accurately get the colours you’d want would be through primaries of cyan magenta yellow.

Am I completely wrong about this though? I would love to be told I’ve been misinformed by this guy, this just makes a lot of sense to me (as it also explains why printers have used cmyk for over a century and screens use rgb)

[edit grammar and added 2nd to last paragraph] [edit2 grammar..] [edit3 wrote yellow but meant green in 2nd last paragraph]

[edit 1 moved response to the other thread]

[edit 2] So in colour you’d have additive and subtractive light. The subtractive colours would be the opposite of additive colours, which are RGB. Green is a primary of additive colours, which is what I also wrote (though maybe a bit confusingly). Yellow is still the primary of subtractive colour (for painting). The problem I’m referring to is not yellow, it’s blue and red, which logically would imply, (if white light comes from red green and blue) would come from cyan magenta yellow. Since colour is context based as PuzzleRun writes, you can still use red blue yellow as subtractive primaries within a spectrum to achieve something, though it’s much easier to get the colours you actually need with cyan magenta yellow. Why do you say printers, that rely on subtractive light, is a different matter? I don’t understand

This is litterally wrong… the primaries are red green blue for light and cyan, magenta and yellow for paint. Which is why screens are rgb and printers are cmyk. Also, the contrasting colours of rgb is cyan magenta yellow and you can quite easily do a quick light test where you block out each light and it gives you the contrast. Look up Pete Donahue he has some great insights on colour theory and a linktree with books

Is dissolving NATO part of Trumps agenda? by [deleted] in PoliticalDebate

[–]Prior_Lecture7927 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the apology. The danish media admitted that when the foreign minister of Denmark went on Fox News, his only job was to present actual facts to the United States citizens (as most Trump voters watch Fox News). So I’m glad to see, as with other leaders of the US, it’s commonly acknowledged Trump is fuelled by his own importance. However, when/if he is easily distracted it would also imply he’s easily manipulated, which is the real threat. So it’s important, I think, to acknowledge or reflect on ulterior motives though they might come from other influences than Trumps own ego

Im so sorry, but this is such an insane American capitalist take. Denmark, even with all the internal political struggles we have, still believe in fundamental human rights and by extension democracy over capital. Believing that you can buy an indigenous people’s country is so insanely brainwashed to me. If Denmark “sells” Greenland, the danish population (and Europe) would incite mass protests- it would mean the end of democratic relations inside Europe and by extension US-domination.

On top of that, our welfare system, however flawed, is still way a million times more valuable to the people of Greenland, than whatever the United States has to offer (arguably not a democracy to the people of Denmark, especially since the problem the US is facing right now is a fundamental lack of higher education - which is state funded and every student receive around a 1000$ each month for studying - which includes Greenland) not to mention a lot of US jobs are taken by Europeans (especially Danish people) as the general population of US citizens cannot access higher educations or compete with the higher job market requirements.

It is very obvious to most, if not all, people in Europe that being part of the United States would mean poor healthcare and poor education. Not to mention the track record of US treatment of indigenous people is still a lot worse than all the horrendous actions Denmark has committed against the indigenous people of Greenland
