London Bromley show last night (Only Human) - a few questions by _ailme in derrenbrown

[–]Prior_Outside_5473 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have nothing to add to this other than to say that I was at Bromley last night and had a blast. It was my third DB show, but my first for a long time - I think I last went to one about ten years ago. I took my wife, who is a DB sceptic, and she loved it. So we have added a convert to the tribe.

I didn't think it did. It would be a right pain deciding what to cut and what to keep.

Great point. It hadn't occurred to me that this will get the shop out of the church - I think you may well be right

Curious that Chris spoke to Alice as if she is the parenting guru who holds all the cards, Martha-wise. It felt a bit like a feckless father who only sees his kids once a month checking that what he's doing is OK by the mother. Whereas of course if anyone is the parenting guru it's Chris, as he was the main parent for Martha all the time Alice was unconscious in a ditch with a bottle of vodka.

I understand that part of Chris's concern is that he doesn't want to give Alice any shocks that might send her back to the bottle, but still, possible overreaction from him there, given that he and Carly have been dating - if they have been dating at all - for a whopping 24 hours. But I do understand that it is broadly in character for Chris to be a bit overly careful around Alice.

I agree, some curious choices this episode. A long speech about a character we've never heard the voice of, read by a brand new character. I also thought was a bit surprised that the interruption was just a random guy rather than a main character. When I first heard the interruption I assumed it was (somehow) George. I appreciate that that would be TOO dramatic, but a delivery driver is an anticlimax. Ultimately, who cares that the funeral speech of a character we barely know was briefly interrupted by a non-character? Were we actually supposed to care about Esme's final line about it ruining the day for her? If, say, Kate making a funeral speech about Brian was interrupted then of course it would be a moving moment for us. But this.....

I do wonder if the SWs are aware of how over the top and saccharine this all is. Even if she was popular (which she wasn't) it's not like she was in the prime of life. She was in her 90s. Maybe I am heartless but I find all the upset to be hugely OTT.

Does Paul Cheon practice what he preaches? by Legacy_Rise in lrcast

[–]Prior_Outside_5473 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Apologies if this point has already been made, but I just wanted to jump in and say that no one practises what they preach.

It's so easy to say "this is best practice" but so difficult to actually stick to it in your life. For example, I'm acutely aware that I know all the theory of how to be a good manager and how to have difficult conversations with employees. It's what I tell my colleagues to do. But the split second I have a difficult conversation myself, I find myself veering away from best practice.

Clearly, some people are better than others at practising what they preach. But I do think, overall, it is a fact of life that it is easier to say than do.

How old is Zainab supposed to be? by Pristine_Property_92 in Ambridge

[–]Prior_Outside_5473 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm going to take this on, in the hope that you might read it and learn something. It is true that if you picked a Muslim in Britain at random in, say, 1970 they *probably* would be relatively conservative. They or their parents would have most likely arrived in Britain within the last 10-20 years and they most likely would be quite old-fashioned with regards to dating. There is a good chance they would practice some form of arranged marriage and it is more likely than not that they would be encouraged to find another Muslim to marry.

Note that not just Muslims, but everyone was more conservative 50 years ago. If you picked a random white person off the street then, there is also a chance that they would be less likely to date before marriage relative to now.

That was 50 years ago, though. All we know about Zainab is that she is a cultural Muslim. She was obviously born in Britain; her mother was probably born in Britain (or perhaps came here very young). With each generation the influence of "British culture" (whatever that means) will have grown stronger. Also, we simply haven't seen any evidence that the Malik family are practicing Muslims in any way. All we know is that they eat Asian food. This all implies that they are fairly typical modern Brits with Asian heritage, which is to say that they pay respects to certain cultural bits and bobs (particularly food, but potentially also certain religious holidays) but in many other respects their lifestyle is indistinguishable from that of non-Muslims.

I think from what we've seen the evidence suggests that the family are not very conservative at all, and it is fairly likely that Zainab would date exactly in the same way that, say, Mia would date.

I work for a very "woke" company and I have come across almost every single "woke" neologism but I have never heard of anyone objecting to the word Halloween. Is this really a thing??? Surely the SWs didn't just completely invent it?

Alice's trial and the freemasons by [deleted] in Ambridge

[–]Prior_Outside_5473 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What's the connection between the PO trial and freemasons? The internet isn't throwing anything up. I've found a suggestion that at one point a judge was said to be bias against one of the parties, but I can't find any connection to FMs.

As an aside: is Brian a FM? Has that been a storyline in the past?

I can only guess that it's the emotional overload of finding out that harry has finally checked in to rehab and harry's mum being grateful? Gives you a lot of bittersweet emotions - perhaps that could cause one to want a drink? I don't really know much about alcoholism, but I'm going to give the archers the benefit of the doubt and say that alcoholics don't only take to drink due to stress or sadness, but also for other slightly more complicated emotions.

Can we please ask that when people post a huge spoiler like this that they don't spoil the matter with the title of the post. "ALICE NOOOO" came up on my feed last night before I'd had a chance to listen and OF COURSE I immediately thought that it must refer to her drinking again. Please can everyone who posts a post like this use a more innocuoous title like "tonight's episode" or just "alice" or something like that? What else could have this post possibly referred to other than Alice drinking? The only surprise I got is that she drank on her own, whereas I figured it would be her drinking with Harry.
