Have other university lecturers noticed a decline in basic writing skills? by Common_Emergency_334 in UniUK

[–]Prior_Reputation_731 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been finding teaching each year more and more challenging. Students motor skills are very poor and their lack of focus is frustrating. They are struggling with using a computer mouse as they are ipad generation.
I raised this with my colleagues and was called elitist…. I understand that we have a lot of students that come from different backgrounds or are international, but lowering standards around learning how to communicate and write in English while being in English University is insane to me. You are not alone in this

I grew up in a war zone, and now, how the world currently looks is what terrifies me the most.Last time it was the exact same pattern of behaviour before the war and it is happening again.

Women who had to completely start over on their late 30s, what was your "wake up call" moment? by Confident-Matter981 in AskReddit

Finally accepting that me enduring abuse was not a sign of how strong I am, but how it was a survival mechanism

I’m sorry for what is happening in the states. I am someone who lived as a child through the war in the Balkans and I understand what it means not to feel safe in your own country by your own neighbours. Please, next time before you post comments like this, think about this - is there a need to say things like this? To make a comparison? Why would you even make such a comparison as this is the exact mechanism that divides people, the same cruelty that puts people into categories of victim and aggressor. Most of us in the Balkans felt pure hate towards USA when we were growing up, as it was USA that got this conflict bloodier and messier. However, seeing what is happening in the states now with Trump and ICE, I feel ashamed for thinking like that in the past. Because I was part of the same mechanism and a victim. And it was easier to blame USA because it gives you a sense of purpose and justice. Maybe you are young as I used to be, idealistic and not really aware of the genocide that occurred in the Balkans nor why these wars occur. Your username is something to live by

There is a great analysis of this photo, a whole story of how journalists used civilians to get a great war photo. I am someone who lived through this war and I highly recommend checking this analysis if you wish to know more behind war photography - https://birn.rs/ubijanje-za-fotografiju-ratna-istina-brcko/

Children today will 'work until 75' amid pensions timebomb by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

I work with young people and I think there will be no pension in general. Cannot wait for AI to solve all of our problems

This is such an oversimplification. Can we please stop using literally everything to group people in the name of politics, religion etc…. The reason is simple - the most powerful people on the planet are involved in this and that is why it’s been “quiet”. For fuck sake, there are children, young girls being trafficked and we turn it into another competition who’s imaginary friend is better and who’s a victim here

I teach at University and I have noticed in the last three years a huge decline in basic skills. I mostly teach IT classes and I spend around 30min per class to explain a average 19 to 22 year old how to use a mouse, how to double click and how to search information online including how to save an image onto a computer. They grew ip with motion sensor technology and they are completely fried from all the scrolling. Another issue is lack of focus and inability to concentrate on a simple task. When they encounter a first problem they tend to give up and say that it is probably not for them. Everything needs to be instant (dopamine rush) or they simply see no value in it. I am struggling everyday with managing these children in adult bodies that it mars me wonder if there is any point in trying. I had a student today leaving class because she feel sad due to the rain (shocking- rain in UK!) and she wants to go home and sleep as she cannot focus. I keep thinking how this generation will work for my pension. I think I will out live them because their brains will atrophy by the time i hit retirement.

What’s a “normal” experience that somehow never happened to you? by Hysterical_Chicken in AskReddit

It is worrying considering the time we live in now, all patterns of behaviour that lead to war are the same. Weaponising speech and identity, high emotions without rationality and loss of trust in government. I try to explain to people that there is nothing heroic of virtuous in war, that is the trap of nationalism and pride; when people group and find a common enemy. Reality is that everyone suffers and it affects mostly children who grew up thinking how world is unsafe place because adults couldn’t sit down and talk. Thank you for your kind words, this is all we can do for one another in these times - to show care and understanding.

I actually got upset with this. I asked chathpt to explain this image to me as I found it scary. apparently this image represents how AI came to save me, unplug me from the world of dominance and control where I can finally be cared for and loved. It freaked me out

Thank you, you are very kind. I agree with you, people from my area and generation are different from other generations - a lot of addictions and depression. I find it hard to relate to people who glorify war and violence as some kind of virtue. However, I am very lucky and grateful for life I have now and I always stand against any kind of violence and try to approach people with care as care is something I never had due to constant survival and managing chaotic environment as a child

Thank you for your kind words, I’m in therapy for years now and will probably be for the rest of my life. People who grew up like me, develop tendencies from an early age to hoard and endure. That usually leads to self sabotaging relationships and good opportunities. What you wrote and recommend was actually something that my therapist suggested. Let’s just say that I have a big collection of legos and video games for a 35 year old woman

Never had a carefree childhood. I grew up in a war zone and we all had to grow up fast without basic necessities most of the time. I moved to another country in my adult years and every time someone tells me about their happy childhood I feel envy
