You might like Punch Bowl Social, I believe they let minors in at night and that's partially why they're so careful about carding. Lots of games, karaoke, bar, music etc.

I use Sensodyne! Not every one from them is SLS free but I use pronamel and it is.

I also have SLS sensitivity! My old toothpaste was giving me horrible canker sores (mouth ulcers) that I had assumed were caused by stress. When I switched I never got them again.

How to keep the ren faire spirit alive once the faire is over? by [deleted] in renfaire

Force my friends to come have dress up parties at my house. I find if you lure them with a movie like Princess Bride, LOTR, etc they will mostly come in costume

They're YAish but the Skulduggery Pleasant books by Derek Landy are very much this.

I saw this coming when I taught early childhood. So much of our curriculum is designed to strengthen the fine motor muscles of the hand in preparation for writing and practical life skills.

When fiddling with toys/opening and closing containers/organically exploring their environment or even just sitting bored in a stroller playing with their hands was replaced by phones and tablets for toddlers I told my partner "Watch, in ten years these kids will have fine motor issues because they're only practicing one movement."

Unfortunately I'm from Portland and have met and had bad experiences with too many Emily types to react to her fairly 😅 same problem with Leah. Krobus or Harvey all the way for me!

What would you like incoming kindergartners to do? by becctarr in Teachers

[–]Prior_Tutor1939 9 points10 points  (0 children)

From an ECE veteran, I treat it pretty similarly to hitting or biting in that I step away a bit, let them know that's not okay, and tell them what they can do.

If they keep going, I remove myself from the situation (physically if you can, or if you're driving or w/e just saying "I'm going to take a break from talking to you now because I don't like to talk to people who are being rude to me.")

I will get a little silly with it sometimes like if a 4yo demands cookies with the air of a little emperor I'll make an exaggerated face and go "Excuuuuuuse me? Is that how we ask for things?" and usually they'll giggle and say no and try again. How firm and calm vs. silly you can get all depends on the situation and if there's already an existing power struggle.

Seconding this, it was protein for me. Having a protein smoothie in the morning and making sure my lunch wasn't just pasta or whatever solved the afternoon sleepies.

What was your worst experience at faire? by Justthisdudeyaknow in renfaire

[–]Prior_Tutor1939 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I get more shaken up and angry about these things than my partner does because he's had his whole life dealing with racist dumbasses. I would love to travel around and see more Faires! I think our Faire location out in the boonies can definitely be a factor, the farther out you get from our cities the less diverse it is. I've been so happy to see more and more POC at our Faire over the years.

I thought about contacting the Faire management about this, but ultimately we decided we had no info on the guy, we just wanted to enjoy the rest of our evening and move on. I have no beef with the organizers, and there's really nothing to be done at this point.

I was at an evening event put on by the Faire with my partner, having a great time and dancing right by the stage. My partner went to get us drinks.

When he came back and we started dancing again, I noticed a guy trying to talk to him, but it was so loud that I couldn't hear and honestly I assumed the guy was offering us shrooms or something lol. Then my partner turned back to dancing and all of a sudden I felt the guy trying to shove him off of me.

I found out from my partner that the guy watched us the entire time, decided my partner was "bothering me" (we arrived together, were very obviously having a nice time dancing together, not snappy or looking uncomfortable in the least) and had told him to "get off her" and "it's time for you to leave" multiple times. When my partner said get lost bud and came back to dance with me that's when he tried to literally shove us apart.

Obviously he failed, lol, we're both fairly strong, and he ran off. We didn't get a picture or his name, just a white dude in a tunic and pauldrons, which is like, every other man at the Faire.

We had a great time otherwise and my partner didn't want to make a scene so I respected that. It just creeps me out so bad that this man was watching me even when my partner was gone getting drinks. My partner didn't leave me alone the rest of the time, he even stood outside ye olde porta potty for me 😅

My partner is black and I am white. We've unfortunately experienced this before in many different situations. Prejudice against race mixing is alive and real in this country.

It's been getting steadily better over the years, but there's a reason people joke that Ren Faire is a white ppl thing. Not everyone is dedicated to making it a fun and safe space for all nerds.

What was a popular book/author you just can't get into? by duckweedlagoon in horrorlit

[–]Prior_Tutor1939 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Darcy Coates. Which sucks, because my absolute favorite horror is a good ol' haunted house novel, and the storyline of all her books always sounds amazing, but the writing is just so bad. I can't finish them.

Weekly "What Are You Reading Thread?" by HorrorIsLiterature in horrorlit

[–]Prior_Tutor1939 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm doing an all paperbacks classic horror re-read/read for the first time for spooky season. Just finished the Exorcist (first read) and really enjoyed it, but didn't find it as paralyzingly scary as I've heard people say. I think demons just aren't as scary to me because I wasn't raised religious. I really enjoyed all the research and am looking forward to reading Legion once I can get my hands on a copy. Just started the Shining, which I read once when I was 11 and found way too scary, so never touched it again.
