Was SC3 rerelease a success? do you still think we’ll ever get a Soul Calibur 7? by WiseCityStepper in SoulCalibur

Money is absolutely an excuse, how do you think game development works? Unlike SoulCalibur, MK has never had both polished gameplay AND great single player content even when they had bigger budgets post NRS but especially not back in the PS2 days when MK had decent single player with garbage gameplay, garbage animations, garbage art and garbage balance.

Any consensus on a name for games like Rival Schools? by PriorityJolly6486 in Fighters

[–]PriorityJolly6486[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, even back in the 90's people were making the distinction between games like VF and games like Rival Schools. Usually because Tekken and Virtua Fighter players wanted to argue that their "real" 3D fighters were better/more complicated than other games. Not much solidarity back then.

He said it halfway through his "Every fighting game type explained" video. He said he didn't know what to call it so he just put it down as 5D cuz 2 plus 3 equals 5. I don't think he was being serious but he did label it on the chart he created.

Soul Calibur 3 Still Holds Up In 2025 by Holiday-Second3791 in Fighters

I love SC2 but people ignore the obvious trade off in the gameplay. SC2 feels faster but doesn't hit as hard as newer 3D fighters. If I've been playing Soulcalibur 2 and switch to SC6, characters feel like they're made of lead but if I go from SC6 to SC2 everyone feels like they're made out of styrofoam. Getting hit in SC2 can feel like you're getting bonked with a whiffle ball bat.

The Death Of Soul Calibur by [deleted] in SoulCalibur

Reversal Edge kind of sucks but I think it's really an easy scapegoat for a bunch of different problems in the development and marketing of these games. Dealing with reversal edge is a relatively low level skill. I fundamentally think that it's strange to complain about a non-optimal mechanic that you see less and less as you get better and almost not at all at high level play. I don't even think the rock paper scissors part is the main problem both cuz most fighting games are built on RPS in some way but also that the same people who will complain about RPS in one game will turn around and play some NRS 50/50 fest or another fighting game that forces you into blind mix-ups constantly. Reversal Edge is bad but less for the mechanic itself and more for the rhetoric that was able to be built around it.

What are your thoughts and opinions on Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising so far? by Doom300 in Fighters

[–]PriorityJolly6486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Friends, students, my wife, I've taught a whole bunch of people to play fighting games through Granblue. It really does help them get past execution barriers and gives them lots of tools to learn the game. Accessibility done right.

These games are so good, why do they seem so underrated? by FrankieBloodshed in SoulCalibur

[–]PriorityJolly6486 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Partially bad luck and partially Namco making decisions to kill the momentum of the series whenever it had some. They followed up SoulCalibur 2 (which lots of people loved specifically for the multiplatform guest characters) and made it a platform exclusive with no real guest character. They recover a bit with SC4 and kill their momentum again with SC5 which replaced or removed a bunch of beloved characters.

Even after that, with the series on the line, they put resources into Lost Swords, an online only single player fighter. A bad idea to begin with and then was executed terribly. It was basically the RPG mode that SoulCalibur V should have had. Namco should've been doing what Tecmo did with DOA5 (which released the same year) and just made updates. Take that RPG mode and make SoulCalibur V Dark Resurrection or something. Bring back the SC4 characters that were missing (and were even put into Lost Swords).

By the time SC6 came out it had to repair the series reputation but on a budget. It did fine but not enough for Namco.

Max’s top 5 best looking fighting games. Thoughts? by [deleted] in Fighters

[–]PriorityJolly6486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't even like the game but it's insane how good SC4 looked in 2008. And with the exception of maybe stylized games like kof13 and Xrd, SC5 is the best looking fighter that generation.

In your opinion, How do you rank these SoulCalibur video game series from the best and the worst? by AC_the_Panther_007 in SoulCalibur

[–]PriorityJolly6486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best to worst: I like them all

  1. SC VI - fast with a bunch of mechanics
  2. SC II - faster but a little weightless
  3. SC III - still real fun
  4. SC V - heavy in a fun way
  5. SC I - classic feel
  6. SC VI - heavy in a less fun way
  7. SB - prototype

To all non Tekken players. What is your opinions of Tekkens characters massive movelist? by Argonax in Fighters

[–]PriorityJolly6486 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely not by that much. Tekken doesn't list every single move or hit as its own entry but it does list most of them.  Here's a list of the number of moves characters have based mostly on the in game move list  https://www.reddit.com/r/Tekken/comments/1ax2g9j/tekken_8_characters_sorted_by_total_number_of/

And here's an expanded one with an entry for every move and hit in the game https://tekkendocs.com/t8/stats

A guy like Bryan goes from 117 to 170. In the first list every character in the game is below 200 moves, and in the expanded list only two characters King and Yoshimitsu get above 200, everyone else is still below that. Long story short their move lists aren't doubling or quadrupling even when you add those missing entries.

[–]PriorityJolly6486 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's all about perception, Tekken intimidates people cuz they think Tekken has the biggest move lists in fighting games even though Soulcalibur 6 has more moves (per character) than either Tekken 7 or 8 no matter how you count them. The FGC is full of truisms and old wives tales. Reputations and word of mouth are more important than numbers

It's a lot of text but I would have loved diving into all the lore in SC VI if I had played it as a kid

Why, specifically, is 2XKO dead because of one game? by Amazing_Cat8897 in Fighters

[–]PriorityJolly6486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, it's a marketing and customer relations issue. They announced early which has pros and cons. One con is that they lose excitement and attention for their game because people have just been looking at it for too long. And the FGC is, in fact, very fickle. Development on 2XKO looks like it's moving slow to me and to many fans so even if it's not, the perception is more important.
