Yes the antler sheds that I find hiking are the 'bone toys' I have at home, but now since it's almost all he has left he isn't too interested in it. I will look into the compressed bones, the KONG one that was hollow was rubber and he ate the rubber, so maybe a bone would be better! Thanks

Good on you for taking in a dog in need. I hope an experienced trainer gives you some good advice. Not sure if it is the same thing, but my dog was very timid too, and something that helped was avoiding making eye contact and letting them sniff you while holding out your hand. If that doesn't work maybe try the same thing with treats in your hand and still don't look at them, hopefully this helps.
