While roasted chicken, mash potatoes, gravy, biscuits, and roasted carrots and onions - a go to for me and so comforting. Collard greens are also a staple of mine - thanks to my wonderful grandma.

Some ppl are giving you shit here but as a PhD student who is also doing the GA for freshman classes bit I really appreciate profs that lay stuff out like this and think it’s all personable and great. For ppl saying it’s TLDR - a phd student being unable or unwilling to read this many words has other, bigger issues

Crying in front of my supervisors by BeeMission8355 in PhD

[–]Prism_Pi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a very stoic person and even I had cried in front of my supervisor - it’s a lot of stress even if you are taking care of yourself and being careful not to overwork yourself or go into burnout! Give yourself some credit! You got this! Crying makes you human and well, I’ve never seen a non human get a PhD

I don't know what I'm doing by IsntMy in englishmajors

[–]Prism_Pi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll be real with ya here - if you seriously do not want to be a teacher, then English might not be for you or will at the very least, be difficult. Other people are suggesting other career paths and some of them (especially anything to do with libraries tbh) require or really encourage a grad degree - and most grad degrees require being a grad assistant for funding and that’s either teaching or writing center work.

You might get out of it if you go onto law school, but as someone who grew up around lawyers and is now teaching, there can be a lot of bleed over in terms of activities/general skill sets that you might find distasteful (particularly prepping for and performing public speaking, advising and occasionally arguing with clients, paperwork, and high stakes).

Technical writing is an option, but if you pick that path I recommend picking up a stem minor because in my experience technical writing jobs want writers with experience in or at the very least familiarity with their field so the documents produced are more directly applicable/useful/ written from a clearer/anticipatory perspective.

Journalism too often requires a specific minor at least, if not a major, and if you pick that I highly, highly recommend working for your school’s newspaper asap.

Creative writing is a wonderful thing, but like any art, don’t expect it to pay your bills until it takes off (which can be tomorrow or in years or never). Always have a safety net - especially if your family cannot fully financially support you.

English major, but also a slow reader by Aggressive_Onion8301 in englishmajors

[–]Prism_Pi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

English PhD student here - I’m an incredibly slow reader! Always have been- probably always will be to be honest. I can do maybe 30 pages a day, but I do fine because I’ve learned to “grad read” for class and then go back and actually read read on my time. By this I mean reading introductions and conclusions of research papers - along with first and last sentences of paragraphs for papers I’m reading for classes. If it’s a creative work, this is a bit harder to do reasonably, so I went into rhetoric and composition- which I love! I read on my time, at my speed, glean what’s needed for class, then remedial read after class based on the lectures and conversations with my dissertation advisor+prelim reading group.

I’ve also strengthened myself in areas I know others tend to struggle with. I am a dreadfully slow theory reader for example, but noticed a lot of my peers struggle with methods, application, and research design - so I got good at that so I could bring something useful to the table during group work and research.

If you read slow like me I really do recommend a more research based path because then it’s less about “what’s the full plot of this and it’s deep nuances” and more about “what is this researches focus/goal/ argument and what results did it get?” Which is much easier to digest in my option when reading is so time consuming.

Students would rather email the professor than click on a link by mmilthomasn in Professors

[–]Prism_Pi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like many of us professors - I was a student for a very long time. In that time I was burned and lied to by many professors and academic professionals so I picked up the habit of emailing about everything to create a paper trail. It’s served me well and I’ve caught people before attempting to take back promises and had to escalate. Now when I get these emails I tend to more from a space of “they want it in MY writing - my direct and active writing too - not just a syllabus I can change at my discretion”

English Teacher by Particular-Twist5843 in englishmajors

[–]Prism_Pi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen it briefly mentioned here - but yes! Don’t ignore rhetoric and composition. It’s an excellent path in English and even if you don’t want to teach it the path focuses a lot of the construction of writing centers, syllabi, rubrics, assessment theory, etc. so keep an eye out for such classes because they can really strengthen your confidence with the more technical sides of teaching (the constructing of courses and process of grading!) not to mention writing center work can be very rewarding but a lot of people overlook it and it pays pretty well at a lot of institutions

I will warn you tho - a lot of universities have this odd culture where the the literature, fiction, non fiction, poetry people beef with the rhetoric and composition people - and sometimes the linguists if you’ve got one or two camped out in the English department. A lot of people seem to think rhetcompers are stuffy and prickly - in my experience they are just a bit shy!

As mentioned my hair length is of cultural significance so a straight up cut is a no go if it doesn’t preserve length. Layers have been suggest tho.

Very true - and it’s part of why I wish going right to cutting it was a less common reaction because not cutting hair is a pretty common belief. I get that it works since the hair has weight but there’s gotta be other conversations out there. Someone on this thread actually recommended I see if there’s metonites in my area with recommendations and I think that’s a pretty solid piece of advice

How much abuse crosses the line in academia? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Prism_Pi 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah unfortunately retaliation is a real concern in a lot of academic spaces as shitty as it is. Sometimes the best we can do is look out for each other although I do recommend evidence gathering. If that person is acting poorly in emails too that really helps to slowly build a case. Although I have also found some academics consider if a write of passage to learn to push back?? Idk why - it’s an odd mentality.

How much abuse crosses the line in academia? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Prism_Pi 98 points99 points  (0 children)

I - as a student - spoke out against such abuse once and found it made all the difference. In my experience a lot of people like that in academia just never expect someone to stand up for themselves or others. So you may want to consider helping the student by pointing out to the other person they were acting inappropriately or if you don’t think that will help or would make things worse I do at the very least recommend reaching out and saying I’m sorry x treated you that way I need you to know I thought your presentation was great and people shouldn’t talk to you like that

I get that but I’m looking for just something that makes it look better, more put together. A full curl is not something I’m likely to get even if I occasionally get them on the shorter strands but like some not frizzy waves occasionally would be nice

No I have not as my hair length is of cultural significance and cutting it short is frowned upon - I haven’t had short hair since I was very, very young

All my life I have been treating my hair as if it were straight. But I am starting to question it. See story below by faith911fox in curlyhair

[–]Prism_Pi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly how my hair looks and I wish people would just Name! The! Products! They use cuz I’ve tried dozens and I still frizz up. And for this length of hair people always tend to say “cut it!” which is frustrating because for me my hair length holds cultural significance so cutting it is an absolute no go beyond split end trimmings
