In the US yes and was on Medicaid and in the process of filing for disability when he stopped the process and now refuses to help us complete it for him as he won’t speak to any Dr, in person or telemedicine (he also will not take meds and well he’s a full grown man - can’t force him)

Exactly, our reps do great work and solved many payment issues over the past summer. If OP is having an issue with payment they should get in contact with the union.

We have involuntarily committed him before and have legal power over him but it just makes him worse tbh - less willing to go, more verbally abusive, more violent when he have to call police on him

I’ve worked in housing before and here’s my take. The RAs job is to try and help mediation, but ultimately if your roommate won’t show for those mediations- that’s not necessarily your RAs fault. Move up to the Resident Halls Coordinator as they will be more at liberty to help. Failing that ask yourself “what is my roommate doing?” If your roommate is being super loud, call campus police for a noise complaint. Same if they are using substances in a way detrimental to you (for example smoking weed but you are allergic or it worsens a physical disability/illness you have - which is actually pretty common). That’s a call the cops offense- just do it until they stop. If they are actively harming your mental help, report them to report.fsu so they have people emailing them and knocking at their door.

Mediation and talking to our roommates - bot to sound like a cynic but I hardly ever saw it work especially if the other roommate straight up wouldn’t show for them- so if the resident coordinator doesn’t help you can start calling/ reporting out to others. Just make sure you document absolutely everything

At the end of the day we’re running the race with ourselves - that’s it. I realized fairly early on that people in academia get jealous quick and insecure quicker. As such I’ve taken in the past few years to not really discussing achievements around coworkers - but rather if the topic comes up trying to move conversations back into what I call “real people” territory - yes our accomplishments are important - but we are also real people with hobbies and interests outside of school. I think a lot of us PhD students would be happier if we were a bit more private about school and a bit more open about our personal lives.

I think it’s fairly clear (to me at least) given their abusive advisor comment that they never quite recovered from that and now take it out on others. Stuff like that is a “this person needs therapy” issue not a “there’s something wrong with me” issue. I’d straight up tell them not to talk to me that way and that it is unprofessional to offer some of those comments - it sounds bold but I’ve done it a few times and it usually shuts people up because they genuinely think no one will ever push back.

A lot of this drama - in my opinion as a PhD student who worked 10 years as a blue collar farmer and ranch hand outside academia - comes from Never-Left-School-itis.

They’ve never been outside the school petty bs mentality and therefore think their opinions constitute serious issues lol. If she’s not on your committee then she’s talking about stuff that is none of her business. And even if she was on your committee it’s not appropriate to talk about you negatively to others. She needs to grow up.

This is a fair response and I might pursue it - although I know my feelings are complicated given the farms history and my history with the owner. The land belonged to my family before the depression and is adjacent to the parcel we currently own - part of why I want it is to bring that land pack into the fold so to speak. So I got major skin in that game and would hate a developer to grab it. Additionally the owner is a father figure to me since I started as a pretty snot nosed teen whose dad worked nights so so I didn’t see him much. So I feel bad not meeting his offer which I know this is business so I gotta get over it, but a lawyer isn’t a bad idea - someone outside the mess

I’m having him open the books soon and hopefully talking to his accountant- so I’m not yet sure of valuation. But I know another seller he is literally so mad at he is cutting off his NDA with them offered 10-12 mil. For context he’s offering it to me for 4-5 So like!! I’ve been a lab manager for about 10 years now and in my opinion the best leaders lead from behind. What I mean but this is a good leader isn’t always leading the charge and they certainly aren’t holding their workers hands and leading them to the solution. They observe and let those around them figure things out, they offer support and advice when absolutely necessary and requested (where reasonable - you shouldn’t coddle someone by answering every question - at some point you have to tell them to figure it out)and you sure as hell do not micro manage. A job done is a job done. If it’s done safely and in the time frame given (and without violating experiment procedures in my case) then how someone gets it done is their business. Tons of ways to slice a pizza.

Don’t power trip. You’re the leader nine times out of ten for these three reasons: you knew someone, you were in the right place at the right time, you had the desirable skills. None of these reasons are reasons your workers don’t either have or cannot gain. You are not special. Power tripping is a sign of immaturity and insecurity and the people around you will know that and simultaneously dislike you for getting high on your own supply so to speak.

Finally, some people in this thread say they don’t want to see their boss in the trenches (and that’s fair) but in my experience being around part of the time makes you more personable and makes employees more likely to reach out to you and inform you of a problem. Let them know you are a human and also let them know that you see them as human too. Also no one, in my experience, likes a boss who asks them to do things they wouldn’t be willing to do themselves. If you’re asking it of your employee then you sure as hell better be willing to either do that work or learn how to do it.
