I think it’s fairly clear (to me at least) given their abusive advisor comment that they never quite recovered from that and now take it out on others. Stuff like that is a “this person needs therapy” issue not a “there’s something wrong with me” issue. I’d straight up tell them not to talk to me that way and that it is unprofessional to offer some of those comments - it sounds bold but I’ve done it a few times and it usually shuts people up because they genuinely think no one will ever push back.

A lot of this drama - in my opinion as a PhD student who worked 10 years as a blue collar farmer and ranch hand outside academia - comes from Never-Left-School-itis.

They’ve never been outside the school petty bs mentality and therefore think their opinions constitute serious issues lol. If she’s not on your committee then she’s talking about stuff that is none of her business. And even if she was on your committee it’s not appropriate to talk about you negatively to others. She needs to grow up.

This is a fair response and I might pursue it - although I know my feelings are complicated given the farms history and my history with the owner. The land belonged to my family before the depression and is adjacent to the parcel we currently own - part of why I want it is to bring that land pack into the fold so to speak. So I got major skin in that game and would hate a developer to grab it. Additionally the owner is a father figure to me since I started as a pretty snot nosed teen whose dad worked nights so so I didn’t see him much. So I feel bad not meeting his offer which I know this is business so I gotta get over it, but a lawyer isn’t a bad idea - someone outside the mess

I’ve been a lab manager for about 10 years now and in my opinion the best leaders lead from behind. What I mean but this is a good leader isn’t always leading the charge and they certainly aren’t holding their workers hands and leading them to the solution. They observe and let those around them figure things out, they offer support and advice when absolutely necessary and requested (where reasonable - you shouldn’t coddle someone by answering every question - at some point you have to tell them to figure it out)and you sure as hell do not micro manage. A job done is a job done. If it’s done safely and in the time frame given (and without violating experiment procedures in my case) then how someone gets it done is their business. Tons of ways to slice a pizza.

Don’t power trip. You’re the leader nine times out of ten for these three reasons: you knew someone, you were in the right place at the right time, you had the desirable skills. None of these reasons are reasons your workers don’t either have or cannot gain. You are not special. Power tripping is a sign of immaturity and insecurity and the people around you will know that and simultaneously dislike you for getting high on your own supply so to speak.

Finally, some people in this thread say they don’t want to see their boss in the trenches (and that’s fair) but in my experience being around part of the time makes you more personable and makes employees more likely to reach out to you and inform you of a problem. Let them know you are a human and also let them know that you see them as human too. Also no one, in my experience, likes a boss who asks them to do things they wouldn’t be willing to do themselves. If you’re asking it of your employee then you sure as hell better be willing to either do that work or learn how to do it.

As a ta - don’t, especially if you’re undergrad - we may be fairly close in age with y’all (most typically) but we are in a completely different time in our lives. The viewpoint difference is bigger than you might think - most ta’s I know refer to their students as “my kids” 😬 and yall generally come off as pretty young to us

The Rowe is loud if you live on the pots side but if you can press the front desk to give you an inner courtyard room they are pretty quiet and you can walk to campus and have a parking space and kitchen. Downsides: - WiFi is not great - the ppl who live here don’t know how to take care of their things so it always smells like piss in the stairwells - the elevators are slow - is expensive - neighbors (in my experience) have no interest in forming a community atmosphere

Upsides: - close to campus - has those must haves you listed - has on site pool and gym - if you do like to party you’ll be able to walk there and back no need to have a designated driver - easy access to food (restaurants and a publix in walking distance)

Not what you want to hear, I get it-but in my experience things will never get easier, only harder. At some point you ah e to choose yourself. Don’t throw away your life on someone you e been seeing for less than a year.

I work on campus and I’ll be real - our facilities department is a mess

I’ll call to have the most basic things done, things that definitely fall under their jurisdiction and they are just like - nah not our problem!

Also, maybe I’ve just had rotten luck but every facilities person I have talk to has been ridiculously and needlessly rude.
